Jenny Lay-Flurrie: Build in inclusion to build better products

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Microsoft chief accessibility officer, explains that organizations and executives are beginning to infuse accessibility into their products and services, but often at a slower pace than at Microsoft, where disability inclusion is built into everything. “We’re on the journey, but we’ve got to speed up,” she says.

Lay-Flurrie also discusses why the core principles of privacy, security and accessibility should be equally prioritized within every company, and shares a valuable lesson from her experience: “If you don’t know if it’s accessible, it’s not.”

“Digital Now” is a video series hosted by Andrew Wilson, chief digital officer at Microsoft, who invites friends and industry leaders inside and outside of Microsoft to share how they are tackling digital and business transformation, and explores themes like the future of work, security, artificial intelligence and the democratization of code and data.

After 40 years, creativity is still at the heart of Adobe

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Cynthia Stoddard, Adobe senior vice president and chief information officer, says that the creative spirit that has always flourished at Adobe – famous for its groundbreaking tools for designers, producers, developers and photographers – now extends to the company’s digital transformation initiatives.

She shares the example of Lab82, named for the year Adobe was born, where employees have an opportunity to use and react to collaborative workspaces before they are widely deployed. She also explains how the company uses data to inform automation that “eliminates toil” so that employees can focus on what’s important.

Why securing the cloud tops customers’ to-do lists

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Charlie Bell, executive vice president, Microsoft Security, explains that while the cloud gives companies tremendous flexibility and the ability to innovate quickly, it gives bad actors those same opportunities.

Most Microsoft customers, he says, are on a journey, contending with an evolving threat with fragmented solutions that straddle cloud and on-premises technology. The destination, he explains, is a “digital civilization” where the entire organization is protected.

Digital Now: Why a global company’s tech can’t just work, it has to wow

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Penelope Prett, the chief information, data and analytics officer at global professional services company Accenture, explains why her tech-savvy workforce, one of the largest in the world, expects tech to be not just ready to go at the point of service and accessible from everywhere, but also to be a delightful experience that supports engagement.

“The thing that’s great about it is when you have a technology-literate population … they are willing to play with you,” she says. “So you can try new things, you can push the edge of the envelope. There’s a much higher tolerance for new things, for failure and for learning.”

“Digital Now” is a video series hosted by Andrew Wilson, chief digital officer at Microsoft, who invites friends and industry leaders inside and outside of Microsoft to share how they are tackling digital and business transformation, and explores themes like the future of work, security, artificial intelligence, and the democratization of code and data.

Prett and Wilson also discuss how the democratization of technology presents new opportunities for business growth, but still needs guardrails in place to address security and usability. At Accenture, says Prett, democratization is celebrated, but user experience, data and security will always remain under the protection of the IT organization.

Digital Now video: Workers around the world are asking, ‘Why the office?’

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Jared Spataro, corporate vice president of Modern Work at Microsoft, explains that employees now prioritize their health and wellbeing over their work, and expect greater flexibility in how, when and where they work.

Spataro also explains why we shouldn’t fear the metaverse, discusses how technology can support a company’s vision of what work looks like, and shares why companies who were open-minded about hybrid work fared the best.

Organizations who had the roughest time in responding to the pandemic, he says, were those who set inflexible policies based on what they thought would happen. “Never put yourself in front of the Mack truck that is a pandemic or the labor market or some big force that you’re not going to be able to control,” he says. “It’s best to be flexible and kind of be in learn-it-all mode.”

Cracking the code: With the right tools, anyone can become a developer

In this episode of “Digital Now,” Charles Lamanna, Microsoft corporate vice president of Business Applications & Platform, explains how Microsoft and its customers are democratizing code by empowering everyone to become a developer.

Low-code tools like the Microsoft Power Platform enable every person in every role – from business users, IT professionals, citizen developers and professional developers – to collaborate on solutions and accelerate innovation across the organization.

The evolution of low-code development, he says, is enabling Microsoft customers to create a “culture and community of self-service, self-identifying, self-starting citizen developers.” He compares this rise in accessibility to parallel trends that have made data, hardware, analytics and automation available to all, not just to experts.

In the early days of Azure, Guthrie says, Microsoft became a strategic partner to our customers, rather than just a vendor, a relationship that encouraged organizations to move mission-critical workloads to the cloud. Now, he says, Azure is running in hospitals, manufacturing facilities, governments, legislatures – even in space and underseas.
