First expansion of ‘Forza Horizon 4’ launches

Forza fans might have December 13th circled on their calendars, and for good reason. After all, tomorrow is the launch day the first expansion for the game – Fortune Island – allowing FH4 players the opportunity to explore a brand-new island location full of danger, treasure, and epic driving adventures. Alongside the launch of Fortune Island, Playground Games is also releasing the fourth update for Forza Horizon 4. This update is bringing new content and experiences to Forza Horizon 4, along with lots of fixes and improvements to the game overall.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights coming with Update 4:

Horizon Life MP Update

With this update, Playground has made some improvements to Horizon Life multiplayer events. Now when you create a multiplayer event, you can post it to the Activity Panel and then return to Freeroam while you wait for other players to join. The previous 40-second limit has been removed, and now you can wait for as long as you like for players to join before you start the session.

Photo Mode Improvements

Forzatographers, rejoice! New improvements to Photo Mode are coming. Now you separately toggle vehicle lights, drivers, wildlife, and crowds to specify elements you want in your photographic masterpieces. In addition, there are new bokeh, focus, and sampling options, as well as more freedom of movement with the photo camera.

Horizon Holiday Party

It’s the holiday season and Forza Horizon 4 players can celebrate with a load of new holiday-themed items available with the latest update. Twelve new festive clothing options are all available from Season Events, The Trial, Wheelspins, and the #Forzathon Shop.

Other Improvements

In addition to new content, Update 4 is bringing with it new improvements across various areas of the game. Highlights include fixing an exploit in Route Creator which allowed players to create routes to easily gain a large number of skill points, as well as fixing an exploit in Rivals which allowed players from being able to use the cars that did not meet the event restrictions. Elsewhere, emotes can now occasionally be found for purchase in the #Forzathon Shop, and the team has added improved visibility of driving line on mini-map in various colorblind modes.

For the full list of fixed in Update 4, check out the Release Notes on the Forza Support section on our Web site.

Don’t forget, Playground Games will be giving fans a world premier of the Fortune Island expansion live from PG HQ on December 13. The show starts at 7 a.m. Pacific/3 p.m. GMT on the official Forza Mixer and Twitch channels and the PG team will be exploring Fortune Island and answering community questions as well. Following Playground’s Fortune Island stream, we’ll have with the December update of “Forza Monthly” which kicks off at 10 a.m. Pacific/6 p.m. GMT, where we’ll be joined by members of Playground to dive further into the Fortune Island expansion. Don’t miss the shows live!

The ‘Forza Horizon 4’ team pays tribute to Día de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a global holiday that originated in Mexico where friends and family gather to celebrate the lives of their loved ones and to support their spiritual journeys.

To pay tribute to the holiday, the Forza Horizon 4 team partnered with three artists, Sam Rodriguez, Juan Puente, and Axis, to share their unique interpretations and to help bring their art to life in-game. Below, learn more about each artist’s creation, their gaming connection, and how you can also celebrate the holiday by downloading new in-game content now available through November 8th.

Sam Rodriguez

“Day of The Dead is a celebration of a person’s life and identity. For this piece I wanted to celebrate the various influences of my own art which include graffiti, gaming, and Aztec images. I chose to illustrate a contemporary urban/hip-hop character with these styles so that the piece could feel like an update of our tradition. The mixing of these styles demonstrates who I am as a person. Over the Calaka’s (Skull’s) eyes reads, ‘Vida’ or ‘Life’ because the holiday is about celebrating the lives of our loved ones and accepting death as a natural and necessary life cycle.

One out of a few of my favorite things to celebrate would be gaming. I am an 80’s baby who experienced the evolution of video games. I grew up playing at arcades, laundromats, liquor stores, and home consoles and still look forward to having sessions after work! Aside from the fun I have playing, gaming provides so much visual inspiration and are in my opinion the masterpieces of our time.”

Juan Puente

“Being born in Mexico, day of the dead art and lore has always been around in one form or another. Being an artist for almost 3 decades has allowed me to create many versions of famous day of the dead images. When Xbox and the Forza team approached me to do some art for them I already had an idea in mind.

My wife 20 years ago got me into gaming and it’s been integrated into our family for quite some time. We don’t really watch much tv, but the family will get together to play when we have a free moment.”

“I was introduced to Day of the Dead, when I was a kid, through one of my teachers. I was already drawing skulls, but when I found out there was a holiday that used them as decorations, I was blown away. My piece celebrates life and death and the banner in my piece is Latin, which loosely translates to “Slow Death”.

I’ve been playing video games since 1978. I had the Odyssey 2 System, and my neighbor got the Atari 2600 soon after. I think back then I played every single game at least once, both on home systems and in arcades. To this day I often wonder how many quarters I spent from the summer of ’81 to the end of ’85.”

To get the Dia de los Muertos inspired Forza Horizon 4 content for yourself, simply follow the steps below through midnight on November 8th:

  1. Complete Autumn #Forzathon Challenges
  2. Go to the Autumn #Forzathon Shop where you’ll see two out of the three shirts available
  3. Purchase the Dia de los Muertos inspired gear with #Forzathon Points!

Then, on Friday, the third shirt will be available to everyone as an unlocked item in the “Character Customization > Tops” menu.

In addition, keep an eye on @Xbox’s Twitter handle this weekend for a chance to win one of these three custom Xbox One X’s. Official rules:

Xbox brings ‘Forza Horizon 4’ to life at Goodwood House

I was dying to get back to the fun stuff, and Xbox obliged. We were heading to the next event in a 60-year-old Land Rover Discovery (the other vehicle on the front of the Forza Horizon 4 box), and I would be behind the wheel. Yes! This was more like it.

It only had four gears but I barely used first: “This vehicle’s got so much torque you should be pulling away in second,” my co-driver, who worked for Goodwood House, said. A plaque on the dashboard said the Land Rover could reach 122mph, but the engine sounded like it was going to explode at 60mph. I had a hard time slowing it down at that speed, as the brakes are as “classic” as the steering, and I nearly hit the car in front a couple of times (sorry to whomever was driving that red Fiat Punto).

We soon headed off-road and took a chalk track that used to be the main route from Chichester to London for horse-drawn carriages. Keeping the Land Rover in a low gear was essential here, as was concentration, as the ride was bumpy, to say the least.

“Take your foot off the clutch and brake and let it go on its own, it won’t stall,” my co-driver said. I was used to driving a modern car with the constant fear that I would stall it. No such problems in the Land Rover – it effortlessly rolled downhill without even thinking about stalling.

With 10 classic James Bond cars on the way, and even some of the weirder ones, the only thing we’ll be missing is a properly shaken and stirred martini to make us feel like the super spy himself.

Fortnite Interview and Xbox One S Fornite Battle Royale Bundle

Getting ready to celebrate the first birthday of Fortnite Battle Royale, our very own Larry Hryb sat down with Nathan Mooney from Epic Games to look back on the year that was. Soon, developers will be able to build mouse and keyboard support in their games if and how they choose — entirely at their discretion — and Xbox will support them in creating the right experience for their games to ensure an optimal and fair gaming experience. Warframe will be one of the first titles testing mouse and keyboard input when the feature arrives to Insider. We also announced that we’re partnering with Razer, a premiere peripheral manufacturer in the gaming hardware space, to bring you the best possible mouse and keyboard experience for this new functionality. We’ll have more details to share on mouse and keyboard support during our November episode of Inside Xbox.

Reach Out Worldwide Charity

Last year, Xbox teamed up with Cody Walker for Game4Paul3 and helped raise over a $150,000 for Reach Out World Wide. We’re getting everyone back together this year for another big charity stream, and we could not be more excited about this event. Catch the Game4Paul4 live stream on October 11.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider DLC Reveal

Shadow of the Tomb Raider may be the conclusion of the new Lara Croft trilogy, but there’s still plenty do to after the credits roll. In fact, seven-months-worth of tombs to explore. Larry raided Rich Brigg’s brain-space from Crystal Dynamics for an exclusive look at the first DLC coming this October on this episode of Inside Xbox.

The Forza Horizon 4 Seasons Simulator

We looked at the one-of-a-kind Forza Horizon 4 Seasons Simulator. The 360-degree booth is designed to mimic the changing seasons in Forza Horizon 4 where celebrities had to endure rain, snow, heat, and mud while they play the game on Xbox One X. Check out these stars battling all the elements on Inside Xbox.

Hollow Knight Interview

Hollow Knight is an incredible indie platformer that’s full of style and mystery, and it’s available on Xbox One right now. The Voidheart Edition on Xbox One means you get all the DLC included for free and is currently 20% for a limited time until October 2. Learn about this modern classic here on the show.

A Closer Look at the Forza Horizon 4 cover car: the McLaren Senna

Only 500 of these high-performance machines were made — and they’re completely sold out. The last one was auctioned off for close to three million dollars and Justine got to check out the cover vehicle for Forza Horizon 4 with Tanner Foust to find out why they’re so coveted.

McLaren Senna Stunt

Inspired by the cover car and spectacular showcase events in Forza Horizon 4, we staged an unprecedented head-to-head race at one of the world’s most iconic motor racing venues. The race saw a McLaren Senna take on the bikes in a straight fight to the top of the Goodwood Estate’s world-famous Hill Climb. And despite the bikes’ unconventionally direct route up the hill, including a few jaw-dropping jumps and tricks, the Senna’s incredible speed and power won out in the end.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in! We hope you enjoyed the show and we can’t wait to tell you all about next month’s episode in a few weeks.

Tips and tricks on how best to tackle each season in ‘Forza Horizon 4’

In Forza Horizon 4, Seasons change everything where players must master driving in dry, wet, muddy, snowy and icy conditions. A first for the racing genre and rarely seen in any open-world game, dynamic seasons create a world that is constantly evolving each week and with more than 450 cars, novices and veterans alike can explore the beautiful open world of Britain filled with unique and challenging driving experiences.

While Forza Horizon 4’s deep upgrade system can optimize any car for any season, it’s always best to think about the right car choice for each weather condition, whether you need to adjust your suspension and how you need to change your driving style depending on the terrain. Luckily, we have some tips and tricks on how best to tackle each season and what to expect, sourced by Turn 10 Studios’ Design Director Jon Knoles.

Hovercraft GIF

Hovercraft GIF

Under a high, mid-day summer sun, conditions are perfect for putting the pedal to the metal on Britain’s fastest motorways or ripping along the golden sands of the northern coast past the brooding Bamburgh Castle. You may encounter the occasional summer rain, but most of the time you’ll find dry weather.

If you take a shortcut through fields, you’ll easily plow through tall grasses and flowers. Don’t worry about wood and wire fences, small trees, or stacked drystone walls. Whatever you’re driving, if you’re going fast enough they’ll break without breaking your car. Smaller, lighter cars will slow down considerably more than larger, heavier vehicles when you plow through these obstacles.

Spring to Summer GIF

When Horizon summer arrives, as with all seasons, keep an eye out for seasonal gameplay events, challenges, and rewards, which expire at the end of the season. You may find summer events often take advantage of the perfect driving conditions to feature faster cars on faster, paved roads.

Summer to Fall GIF

Summer to Fall GIF

Whether you call it autumn or fall, it’s perhaps the most beautiful and most colorful season to explore the tree-lined, winding roads of Britain’s Lake Country in the world’s greatest road cars, or to tackle the 4×4 Adventure Park’s muddy playground for off-roaders.

It’s after harvest, so fields that were full of tall grasses in summer are now plowed and full of soft or muddy earth that will slow you down a bit, and are peppered with new obstacles in the form of big and heavy bales of hay, which will definitely slow you down if you hit them. It will rain in autumn more than in summer and roads do become a bit slicker in the wet, so you’ll be wanting to plan a little earlier for hard turns.

Summer to Fall GIF

Summer to Fall GIF

When autumn arrives, keep an eye out for a seasonal barn find car—each season reveals a classic to discover and restore, but you’ll want to find it before the season changes again.

Fall to Winter

Fall to Winter

With the low sun shimmering through bare trees across a frosty landscape, you might be worried that you’ll be sliding all over the place. Don’t worry, all tires are good for all seasons, and will be enough to keep you on the roads if you remember to brake—and turn—for curves. If you want more grip on the snow and ice, you can equip your car with studded winter tires in the upgrade shop, and any car that was already equipped with off-road or rally tires will automatically switch to studded tires.

The weather may range from clear to light flurries, or the occasional blizzard. Higher elevations in the north will have more deep snow than lowland areas in the south. Coastal beaches are still sandy, and motorways, the city streets of historic Edinburgh, and other major roads are cleared of ice and snow. In winter, you can reach previously inaccessible areas to search for bonus boards to smash or barn find cars, such as on an island in the middle of a deep lake. And when you’re on the frozen lake, it doesn’t matter what you’re driving or what kind of tires you have, you will slide around a lot, which itself is a lot of fun.

Fall to Winter GIF

Fall to Winter GIF

Keep an eye out for snowmen, too. Smashing them is fun, and it will net you combo skill points. Seasonal events are sure to test your mettle on the slippery ice, but rest assured there are still clear roads to conquer.

Winter to Spring GIF

Winter to Spring GIF

After a cold winter, the British landscape bursts to life once again in vibrant color, and one thing you can be sure of is a lot more rain, but you’ll also get a lot of sun. Or as they say in much of Britain in the spring, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes.”

Of all the seasons, spring is probably the one with the most varied conditions throughout. Previously dry or shallow riverbeds become deep, rushing streams, which may bring low-slung supercars and lightweight cars to a crawl, but don’t pose much of a challenge for off-road vehicles such as SUVs, trophy trucks, and buggies. If you happen to climb to a mountain peak in the north, you’ll still find pockets of snow to play around in.

Spring to Summer GIF

Spring to Summer GIF

As with autumn, spring events may bring a more rally-heavy theme with mixed-surface races to suit the varied conditions. Whether it’s in a sturdy new Subaru WRX Sti, or a classic Group B rally monster from the 80s, you’ll be sure to discover some trail-blazing events in cars built to tackle all the tarmac, gravel, and mud that you’ll get plenty of in spring.

Forza Horizon 4 launches on October 2, 2018 on Xbox One, Windows 10 and Xbox Game Pass, and is now available for pre-order in the Microsoft Store. Stay tuned to Xbox Wire and for future updates.
