The Weekender: I’m Sorry, HOW Much? Edition

I’m not going to lie, it’s been a bit of a slow week from where I’m sitting. I’ve compensated for it as best I can, but there’s also not been as much to talk about news-wise that I wasn’t thinking of saving for today’s column. A couple of things are a bit late, which you’ll read about below, and people don’t seem to be as keen about reading Apple Arcade stuff as I thought they’d be.

Maybe TouchArcade has the right idea of doing individual game reviews instead, I’m not sure. I also can’t stop playing Hearthstone Battlegrounds, and it scares me.

Meanwhile, in the world of mobile games….

Out Now

Civilization 6: Gathering Storm (iPad)

So, that happened. Without any fanfare or warning, the second major expansion for Civilization 6 is now available on iPad as an iAP. It costs a ridiculous $39.99 to buy full price. 2K/Firaxis’ pricing strategy with Civ 6 has been a bit bonkers on both PC and Mobile, so this is par for the course.

In more promising news, however, the IAP unlock for the full base game is down to £4.99, with the Rise & Fall expansion is down to its lowest ever price of £14.99. $40 is a big ask for any game expansion, regardless of platform, but if you haven’t jumped onto the mobile Civ 6 bandwagon yet $5 is a very good price for a game that will give you many hours of entertainment.

Football Manager 2020 Mobile & Touch

Earlier in the week was this year’s edition of Football Manager. Football Manager 2020 comes in two forms, as is traditional:

  • Football Manager 2020 Mobile (iOS | Android) which is a streamlined version of the game for phones and tablets.
  • Football Manager 2020 Touch (iPad | Android) which is the PC version ported for use on a tablet device.

This year seems to be more about refinements and improving on features added in the 2019 version than about adding in brand new features, although overhauls around Media interactions and changes to how reserve and youth teams work have been included. Our review of 2020 Mobile should be dropping next week.

Updates & News

Acram Digital’s port of legacy board game Charterstone is getting a beta. This will be running across PC and Mobile, and you can go here if you want to sign-up and participate. It feels like something’s gone wrong with mobile board games recently, so it’s nice to see companies still working on mobile ports.

The Minecraft Earth Early Access is also now available in the following countries: Japan, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland. In other ME news, the Sensor Tower is reporting that since the roll-out started on November 12th, the game has been downloaded 1.4 million times. 1.2 Million (or just over 86%) are from the US. 73% of those downloads are on iOS.

Last and most definitely least, I’m going to talk about Merge Dragons briefly. It’s mainly for my wife’s sake, but I’m also stopping and taking a moment to wonder at how… creative… companies can get sometimes when it comes to cross-promotion. I’ll give you three guesses as to which currently popular cult phenomenon is having a crossover event with Merge Dragons:

Rick & Morty.

Sales

Black Friday is next week so expect a lot more sales to appear then, but here’s a few discount deals you might be interested in (we haven’t included the Civ 6 stuff as we talk about that above):

  • Playdek’s re-release of Fluxx Digital, while not the best port in the world, is still worth checking out if you’re looking for a new party-focused card game. It’s down to $0.99 on iOS and Android.
  • One of our favourite minimalist puzzle games, Mini Metro, is discounted for the first time this year and is down to $0.99, the best price since December 2017. It’s successor is one of our favourite Apple Arcade games, but if you’ve yet to try this out you really should.
  • The first Beholder game is down to $2.99 again.

Seen anything else you liked? Played any of the above? Let us know in the comments!

News - Black Friday 2019 Deals For Nintendo Switch: Games, Joy-Cons, And More
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 11-23-2019, 04:53 AM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

Black Friday 2019 Deals For Nintendo Switch: Games, Joy-Cons, And More

We don't see deals for Nintendo games as often as we might like, which makes the times they do go on sale notable. Black Friday 2019 will some significant discounts on Switch games across several stores, and Nintendo's Black Friday page also says to "check back soon for more deals," which means more deals are on the way in the lead-up to the Black Friday. That said, the Switch (and newly launched Switch Lite) are selling so well we probably won't see too many deals on them, aside from the same Mario Kart 8 Deluxe bundle we saw last year, which is a bit of a bummer, admittedly.

Still, we'll certainly be seeing an Eshop sale that will discount digital Switch games, presumably along with those for 3DS. In fact, Nintendo's Black Friday Eshop sale has already been previewed for Europe and includes the expected discounts on a mix of first- and third-party games. Among them are Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Cadence of Hyrule, and Dragon Quest Builders 2, all of which will be 30% off.

Microsoft, Best Buy, and Target have also revealed the sales they'll have ready for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so make sure to check those out if you're shopping around.

In terms of Nintendo's official lineup of deals, first up is an assortment of Nintendo Switch games. Normally sold for $60, the following games will be available for $40 (33% off) at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart starting Wednesday, November 27:

While Nintendo's page says these games will be available for $40, Target's Black Friday ad claims the store will offer The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Tennis Aces, and Super Mario Odyssey for only $30 each as limited-time doorbuster deals. Also, please note that more games may be on sale as well, but the Nintendo website only confirms the above titles. Finally, if you prefer to buy games digitally, the Nintendo Eshop's deals will likely be revealed at a later date.

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers are also getting a discount during Black Friday. Normally sold for $80 a pair, you'll be able to pick up a new pair of either gray or neon red and blue Joy-Cons for $60 (25% off). This offer will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target starting Wednesday, November 27.

For those who play Pokemon Go or the Pokemon: Let's Go Switch games, the Poke Ball Plus is a handy accessory for storing and catching Pokemon. It also comes with Mew, a mythical Pokemon that you can transfer into Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu or Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee. Normally sold for $50, the Poke Ball Plus will be on sale for just $20 (60% off) at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart starting Thursday, November 28.

Finally, if you were hoping for a price drop on the Nintendo Switch itself, you might be out of luck. Nintendo is offering the Switch bundled with a free digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for its full price of $300. If you have a good memory, you might recall this is the exact same bundle offered during Black Friday 2018. The difference this year, however, is that an upgraded Switch model with better battery life has since been released, but this particular bundle includes the original model without that improvement.

That said, if you're interested in Mario Kart and don't mind forgoing the extra battery life, this is still a solid deal. While not included in Nintendo's Black Friday game deals, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe usually goes for around $50 on Amazon and elsewhere, so you're saving a good wad of cash on this bundle. The console deal will be available at Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart starting Thursday, November 28.

Nintendo's Black Friday 2019 deals

  • Select Nintendo Switch games -- $40 ($60)
  • Joy-Con controllers (Gray, Neon Red and Blue) -- $60 ($80)
  • Poke Ball Plus accessory -- $20 ($50)
  • Nintendo Switch with free copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe -- $300

Microsoft - Returning to Taos Pueblo for the birth of a son

Returning to Taos Pueblo for the birth of a son

Adonis grew up at Taos Pueblo, but his parents sent him to school in Tucson when he was transitioning from middle school to high school. Every summer, he’d return to Taos Pueblo and fall in love with the land more and more.

But spending the school year elsewhere gave him a different perspective when he returned. He wanted to do something with the skills he was gaining every year to help Taos Pueblo keep growing and thriving. This desire eventually solidified into his life’s purpose: to serve indigenous communities. What wasn’t as clear was how he’d do that.

His path led him to graduate school to study business, with the idea that a business degree would provide many useful tools and bring multiple opportunities to fulfil this purpose.

A side-by-side photo of a boy playing outside and playing baseball

During his time in grad school, he worked on a project for Microsoft and was introduced to one of the project sponsors, Mike Miles. Mike was just putting together a new team at the company, now the Talent Workforce and Community Development Team, whose goal was to build and nurture relationships with the local communities that hosted Microsoft’s datacenters. Adonis took interest in the project because he observed a genuine interest in the company to create meaningful and long-term impact—something that at the time was counterintuitive to his perspective of corporate America.

Over a few months of working with Mike, who Adonis describes as a visionary and authentic leader, Adonis began to soften to the idea of corporate work, especially if it meant he had a way in to develop relationships with local and potentially native peoples. A year later, he started working on Mike’s team.

In addition, Adonis has taken a voluntary leadership role to organize with a group of indigenous employees who work at Microsoft to create their own official employee resource group inside the company.

“I see myself building on top of all of this work to continue to serve indigenous peoples,” he says.

  Fedora - Sharing Fedora
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 11-22-2019, 09:58 PM - Forum: Linux, FreeBSD, and Unix types - No Replies

Sharing Fedora

After being a Fedora user for a while, you may have come to enjoy it. And in fact you might want to encourage others to try Fedora. You don’t need any special privileges or to become a Fedora Ambassador to do that. As it turns out, anyone can help others get started with Fedora just by sharing information about it.

Having the conversation

For example, if you go out to lunch with a group of colleagues periodically, you might find it natural to talk about Fedora with them. If someone shows interest, you can suggest to get together with them for a Fedora show and tell. There isn’t any need for formal presentations or prepared talks. This is just having lunch and sharing information with people you know.

When you’re with friends, relatives, colleagues, or neighbors, conversation often turns to things computer related, and you can bring up Fedora. There are usually opportunities to point out how Fedora would partially if not completely address their concerns or provide something they want.

These are people you know so talking with them is easy and natural. You probably know the kind of things they use PCs for, so you know the features of Fedora that will be attractive to them. Such conversations can start anytime you see someone you know. You don’t need to steer conversations toward Fedora — that might be impolite, depending on the situation. But if they bring up computer related issues, you might find an opportunity to talk about Fedora.

Taking action

If a friend or colleague has an unused laptop, you could offer to show them how easy it is to load Fedora. You can also point out that there’s no charge and that the licenses are friendly to users. Sharing a USB key or a DVD is almost always helpful.

When you have someone setup to use Fedora, make sure they have the URLs for discussions, questions, and other related websites. Also, from time to time, let them know if you’ve seen an application they might find useful. (Hint: You might want to point them at a certain online magazine, too!)

The next time you’re with someone you know and they start talking about a computer related issue, tell them about Fedora and how it works for you. If they seem interested, give them some ideas on how Fedora could be helpful for them.

Open source may be big business nowadays, but it also remains a strong grassroots movement. You too can help grow open source through awareness and sharing!

News - This Week At Bungie – 11/21/2019
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 11-22-2019, 09:57 PM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

This Week At Bungie – 11/21/2019

This week at Bungie, we’re investing in solar energy.

We wrapped up Festival of the Lost this week, but cleaning up the decorations wasn’t the only thing that changed in the Tower. Ikora finished her construction project, closed out all the permits, and Guardians launched an attack on the Undying Mind.

The attack is ongoing and all Season Pass holders can join in on Vex Offensive and transmat the finished portal from the Tower to summon and defeat Undying Minds from different timelines.

The impact of your victory has not been made clear just yet, but in time, you will learn more about how this will further evolve the world as we transition into the next Season.

Solar Shifts

Next Season, we are shaking up the Solar subclasses. We are reworking several ability trees and the Destiny Dev Team has the details on what to expect when you praise the Sun next season.

Destiny Dev Team: Hey Guardians, it’s the Combat Systems team here, back again to talk about some updates we’re making to the abilities sandbox in the next Season. Previously we spent a Season focusing on subclasses of one specific element type such as Arc and Void. Up next, the Combat Systems team is tackling Solar subclasses as our focus for gameplay updates.

As we’ve mentioned in past TWABs, our goal with these subclass updates is to “revisit some older subclass paths and freshen them up a bit.” In execution, this means that older subclass paths will feel like viable choices in many of our activities and that players can find a home in any of them.

When we started working on sandbox updates to follow Season of the Undying, our team looked at the whole catalog of Solar subclasses by cross referencing data, feedback, and conversation to figure out which subclasses needed help, which are performing fine, and which ones were a bit too potent. During our investigations, it was pretty clear that three specific subclasses were underperforming and needed to be taken back into the shop for a rework.

It’s worth noting here that a rework doesn’t mean it’s a completely new subclass. It means that we took the root of the gameplay fantasies for those subclasses and either expanded on what was already there or shifted some of the existing attributes closer to their fantasy. In some cases, entire perks were changed to help further the gameplay role and fantasy of those subclasses.

Those three Solar subclasses are:

Gunslinger: Way of the Sharpshooter (Bottom Path)

Traditionally, Way of the Sharpshooter has mostly been used in specific PvE activities and almost exclusively paired with the Celestial Nighthawk helm. We wanted to move Way of the Sharpshooter to be something players want to choose more often and for a wider range of activities. To do that we needed to differentiate both Golden Gun paths and make Sharpshooter more versatile and interesting to use in PvE. In order to differentiate the 3-shot and 6-shot Golden Gun and better play into their fantasies, we’ve made the following changes:

For 3-shot we increased the auto-aim distance and reliability when aiming down sights, as it fulfills the role of long range accuracy. For 6-shot, we shortened the damage falloff range to emphasize the short range gunfighter role with a lot of kill potential. While it can still perform at longer ranges, it may take an extra shot to get the job done. We’ve made other changes to Way of the Outlaw to help keep its potency like adding a new Explosive Prox Knife that can stick to surfaces and detonate when enemies pass nearby.

All up – we want Way of the Sharpshooter to feel more active and rewarding for players who can fulfill the role of the sharpshooter by taking down enemies with accuracy and precision.

NEW Weighted Knife: High-damage knife throw with a long wind up. Travels at high speeds, bounces once, and does extra damage to the head. Precision shot final blows recharge the melee completely. One-hit precision final blow in PvP.

Practice Makes Perfect: (QoL):  Lasts longer but gives a bit less energy per second. Precision hits grant two stacks.

NEW Knock ’em Down: Precision final blows increase weapon stability and ADS speed. Timer starts at 10 seconds but any additional final blow/assists can increase it up to 25 seconds. Casting your Super with this buff above 20 seconds consumes the buff and grants extra damage. (Does not stack with Celestial Nighthawk).

Line ’em Up: (QoL): Old perks from Crowd Pleaser are now part of this perk. (Golden Gun can cause precision damage and precision shots generate orbs of light).

Sunbreaker: Code of the Devastator (Middle Path)

Titans who adhere to the Code of the Devastator want nothing more than to crush their foes with smoldering hammers, and we want to see them live their dreams. When our data indicated that this subclass was underperforming in PvP, we decided to make a few changes that should enable it to be more competitive.

The Roaring Flame perk has received a significant buff to its bonus damage, and the buff now lasts 25% longer, making it easier to build and retain stacks between encounters. The base damage of Throwing Hammer melee ability has increased—it’s now very lethal in PvP while you have Roaring Flames active. In addition, once you’ve thrown the hammer and it’s lying on the ground, you don’t have to get quite as close to it to pick it back up. Finally, we tuned the Super in a number of ways.

For starters, Burning Maul now lasts longer, giving you more time to use it strategically instead of simply spamming the slam button. (Titans. All we want to do is smash, right?) We also increased the height of the heavy-slam explosion, so this Super should feel much more potent against airborne enemies. That’s the gist of it, but here are more details:

Throwing Hammer: Increased impact damage from 100 to 120 and increased hammer pick-up radius from 2m to 3.5m. Adjusted hammer throw animations to fit a more damaging attack.

Roaring Flames: Increased damage bonus from 10% per stack to 25% per stack in PvP, and increased duration from 15 seconds to 20 seconds.

Burning Maul: Increased duration from 21.2 seconds to 28.5 seconds

  • Light Attack: Reduced light attack energy cost from 5% to 3%. Adjusted the animation so that it flows seamlessly into chained light attacks without stopping.
  • Heavy Attack: Ground Slam attack now detonates when it detects enemies above it. Detonation radius was increased to make landing attacks more consistent. Increased energy cost from 6% to 8%.

Dawnblade: Attunement of Sky (Top Path)

With Attunement of Sky we wanted to push its air superiority gameplay further. When we initially released this path, its movement capabilities were tuned around the original Destiny 2 gameplay experience, which was much slower and more deliberate about positioning. However, over time, this movement needed to adapt to the new sandbox. We want to give you the gameplay experience that the fantasy begs for: A flying angel who can maneuver with grace and destroy its foes below.

Now before we get started I wanted to touch on one thing: To accomplish our goals of reworking the air superiority role, we needed to differentiate the two Daybreak paths from one another. As such, we reduced the speed at which Burst Glide accelerates players in Daybreak. We know this is a controversial change but we wanted to reserve the air superiority gameplay with Attunement of Sky and the Burst Glide speed was blurring the lines between both Daybreak paths.

Icarus Dashes while in Daybreak have increased speed and thrust to recapture the burst glide gameplay for those running the air superiority path. We hope that, while this change is different, you still feel as fast as before—but with maybe a bit more expression behind that speed. The rest of the changes are below:

NEW Celestial Fire (Melee): Send a spiral of three explosive Solar projectiles.

Heat Rises: (Rework) Consume your grenade to extend Glide time and dramatically reduce the in-air accuracy penalties for weapons.

Winged Sun (Rework): Fire weapons, use Celestial Fire, and throw grenade while gliding. Airborne final blows grant melee energy and extend the duration of Heat Rises.

Icarus Dash (Rework): Tap (Crouch) twice to dodge in midair. Dodging in Daybreak accelerates players farther and costs less Super energy while under the effects of Heat Rises.

Added note: Due to the nature of these reworks, Wings of Sacred Dawn received a buff where it gains 15% damage resistance while Tome of Dawn is active.

There are a whole swath of changes we’re working on that extend beyond these three subclasses. Most Solar subclasses had some tuning and some non-Solar subclasses got a bit QoL love too. We hope that with these changes, you’ll feel energized playing any Solar subclass—regardless of activity. Thanks for having us!

Final Howl

Next week, Lord Saladin will return to the Tower for the final time during Season of Undying. This will be your final shot at earning pinnacle rewards from Iron Banner until next Season. If you haven’t finished up your Season Pursuit, make sure to do it before the end of the event on December 3.

Iron Banner Control

Starts: 9:00 a.m. PT on November 26

Ends: 9:00 a.m. PT on December 3

We’ll be featuring a reprised armor set next season, so if you still want to get some pieces from this set, grab them quick! Saladin is also offering enhanced mods and other items in exchange for Iron Banner tokens you may have collected. You can turn them in now or bank them for when Iron Banner returns next Season.

Gaming and Giving

We’re completely blown away by the generosity you all showed throughout the Game2Give fundraising campaign in support of the Bungie Foundation’s iPads for Kids Program and of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

In just three weeks, you all raised $1,673,857.62! We reached this incredible amount of funding because of the 40,000+ donors and 5,500 streamers who supported the campaign across 104 countries. To say this was a true global Guardian initiative is an understatement!

For the Bungie Foundation, this will give us the capacity to expand into up to five new hospitals in 2020 and help over 250,000 more patients than we ever have before! We are so excited to continue our work of replacing fear with joy, boredom with entertainment, and uncertainty with a sense of normalcy for so many more kiddos.

And check out how this funding will help the work that Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals does every day.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for showing us once again how truly special the Bungie Community is through caring about each other and those in need.

Wanna Cook?

For those looking to add more Destiny books to their collection, we are very happy to announce Destiny: The Official Cookbook and Destiny Grimoire Anthology Vol. Three are coming in 2020.

In collaboration with Insight Editions and author Victoria Rosenthal, Destiny’s first official cookbook is filled with recipes inspired by the characters and locations seen throughout its expansive universe.

Destiny Grimoire Anthology Vol. Three is coming in late 2020 as the next edition of the popular Grimoire series.

These titles will be available at the Bungie Store and other booksellers. Stay tuned for more details. Be sure to visit the Bungie Store product pages linked above and click “Email When Available” to be among the first to know when the books are open for pre-order.

Tip of the Spear

Stay up to date on the latest from the Player Support team.

This is their report.

Destiny 2 on Stadia

This week, Destiny 2: The Collection launched on Google Stadia. Players who are looking to get set up with Stadia for the very first time should make sure they visit our Stadia Guide.
Furthermore, existing Destiny 2 players who wish to bring their characters over from other platforms can do so right now through our Cross Save page. As a refresher; Cross Save allows players to access their preferred set of Guardians, gear, and Season Passes on all (Stadia details below) platforms.

New players who are starting their Destiny 2 journey with Stadia can also enable Cross Save, so the Guardians they build and gear they earn travels with them to other platforms. However, players should know that Season Pass access granted on Stadia through Destiny 2: The Collection does not transfer to other platforms using Cross Save.

Destiny 2: The Collection on Stadia includes a Season Pass access at no additional charge. Players who have Cross Save enabled with their Stadia account who would like to access Seasonal content on other platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam) will need to purchase those Season Passes directly on one of those platforms.

As a final reminder, expansion licenses (Forsaken, Shadowkeep) do not transfer between platforms with Cross Save. Players who wish to access activities which rely on these expansion licenses will need to purchase them for every desired platform.

PC Migration and Forsaken Licenses

Since Destiny 2 launched on Steam last month, we’ve monitored posts from players who have provided feedback and reported issues regarding the PC Migration experience.

After thorough investigation, we believe that we have resolved an issue which was preventing a subset of PC players from transferring their Forsaken licenses from their Battle.net accounts to Steam. Players who previously encountered this issue should re-initiate migration at our PC Move page.

Destiny 2 Known Issues

Listed below are emergent issues being investigated in Destiny 2.

  • The MIDA Multi-Tool catalyst will not drop for players who win a competitive Crucible match at the Legend rank if they are playing with clan mates and the “Catalyst Seeker” clan rank bonus is active. To mitigate this, we recommend that players seeking the catalyst play solo or team up with friends who are not in the same clan.
  • Black Armory Keys cannot be used or deleted if the Mysterious Box quest has already been completed.
  • Some players may experience an issue where blank items from Festival of the Lost are taking up slots at their Postmaster.
For the latest list of emergent issues, players should visit our Known Issues thread. Players who observe other issues should report them to the #Help forum.

Act III

Gather around and check out some of our favorite community created videos this week. As always, we’ll be sending the creators a special emblem, just make sure you have your Bungie.net profiles in the description of the video so we know where to send them. Roll the clips!

Movie of the Week: Punch Stuff

Honorable Mention: Gunslinger

Next week is a short week for us with some US holidays. Good news is that means an early TWAB. DMG is already working on a short update next Tuesday. We’ll see you then.

Anniversary: Feel Old Everyone, Donkey Kong Country Turns 25 Today

DKC

Hmm. It’s almost like video games themselves are conspiring to make us feel our age recently. Earlier this week Super Smash Bros. turned 20 in the PAL region, and today we posted about Pokémon Gold and Silver reaching the same milestone. Well, what with November historically being lousy with video games releases and Mother Time refusing to stop rolling on and on, we just can’t get away from these anniversaries.

As devout DK fans (or, indeed, those of you that read the headlines before clicking on articles) will know, Rare’s Super Nintendo platformer Donkey Kong Country today celebrates 25 years on this planet. It may have turned up as the 16-bit era was winding down and new-fangled polygons were starting to catch gamers’ eyes, but its innovative use of sprites created from 3D models looked mind-blowing on a SNES back in the day, and kept many Nintendo fans happy as the nascent field of 3D gaming stumbled into existence on home console hardware.

Rare was on the cusp of a remarkable period that would see the UK developer produce some of the finest and best-selling games on Nintendo platforms. Visually, Donkey Kong County might not have aged as gracefully as some platformers of the era, but it was a landmark release and would go on to shape the big ape’s appearance and adventures for many years to come.

We’d tell you to fire up your Switch and give it a play for old times’ sake, but DKC isn’t yet available with the other Super NES games via your Switch Online subscription. Donkey Kong Country does feature on the SNES Classic Mini, though, and there are multiple other ways to play it if you’re feeling nostalgic. Failing that, you could always play Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and appreciate how far DK has come in two-and-a-half decades of platforming. Go on, go bananas.

Is that the end of the video gaming anniversaries for the day, then? Not on your life – consoles get released in November too, you know! If we didn’t stick to ‘significant’ five-year increments, the site would be filled with nothing but celebration posts marking the passage of time and our inexorable journey away from childhood and into the unknown abyss…

Review: Black Future ’88 – A Frantic Cyberpunk Classic

Everybody’s been bitten by the cyberpunk bug recently, with CD Projekt Red’s long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 finally being unleashed on the world next year. There’s no word as of yet regarding whether the futuristic adventure will be following The Witcher 3’s leather-booted footsteps over to Nintendo’s machine, but those waiting desperately for their cyberpunk fix shouldn’t despair; Black Future ’88 may just fill that gap.

Much like the aforementioned epic from Poland’s most famous studio, Black Future ’88 has had a somewhat protected development. Indie developer SuperScarySnakes picked up the Game of the Show nomination for this outing at the Bit Awards way back in 2017, and the title has gone through a closed beta period before finally making its way to us on Switch. It has certainly garnered a huge amount of interest and support during this process, however, and it’s not hard to see why – the gorgeous pixel art visuals and thumping synth soundtrack are striking indeed, and bound to get even the most passive observer curious about what exactly the game is all about.

Black Future ‘88 is essentially a 2D platformer which borrows many cues from the roguelikes of old, albeit one set in a world reminiscent of Blade Runner. Being mechanically a platformer, the objective is to ascend up the procedurally-generated living tower known as Skymelt; you have to make it through the tower overcoming the numerous foes and bosses along the way all the way to the top. There’s a catch, however – you only have 18 minutes to live before your heart explodes. You might have a tad more or less time depending on which protagonist you choose, but either way, you’ve got to get as far as you can before your life comes to an end. Waiting for you at the top is the tower’s architect, Duncan, who is the one who created this world of darkness with his nuclear rain. Your heart’s ticking time-bomb means you’re unlikely to get to meet him unless you’re quick on your feet, however.

The game features a sizable array of characters which players unlock along the way, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. On a simple level, they may differ in terms of how much ammo and ‘blood’ they have; blood in this game is essentially synonymous with ‘health’, with a few additional caveats such as the possibility of blood becoming ‘dirty’ or infected through taking stims, as well as other side effects.

Other characters may possess special abilities, such as the ability to slow down time, be slightly older or younger (allowing them either less or more than the allotted 18 minutes before they meet their maker), amongst numerous others. The key thing here is balance; character strengths are set against their logical weaknesses, and players are encouraged to find the character which suits their specific style of play. For example, you might want to choose the character Runnels if you want the best weapons and trust yourself to be skilled enough to avoid damage. If this sounds complicated, the default character Hauer is designed to be perfectly balanced in all areas, albeit having little else of note to make him special. The point is that these are not simply visual variations; the character you choose will change the way you play the game.

Progress through Black Future ’88 sees players travelling through a procedurally-generated sequence of rooms up the tower. Not everybody is a fan of random levels, but in practice, the same selection of rooms appear frequently enough that it doesn’t feel at all arbitrary. The common complaint regarding procedural generation is that players would prefer to play stages carefully-designed by the creator rather than through an algorithm, and these stages certainly feel man-made.

All rooms feel like they have been tweaked and balanced to perfection, with some simply featuring robotic enemies to overcome while others require the pulling of switches and so on. Despite the direction of travel inside a tower naturally being vertical, players are greeted with a wide array of rooms in all directions which they can decide for themselves whether or not to explore. The rather helpful ‘boss’ marker makes it clear where the player should be going, and the ’18 minutes until death’ mechanic makes speed of the essence. And yet, exploring the other rooms to purchase vital weapons, ammo and blood is essential if you wish to overcome the bosses that hinder your progress.

Speaking of the bosses, they are excellent creations indeed. Ranging from sword-carrying villains with a huge flying robotic buddy to bullet-spraying spheres which wouldn’t be out of place in a classic shmup, there’s a decent variety in store here, each offering up unique strategies to beating them. Players are given ample warning when they approach a boss and plenty of opportunity to prepare themselves for what lies ahead. The game usefully lets you teleport back to previous rooms using the map interface, ensuring that you can easily go back to a weapon or stim seller to prepare, or even check out some unexplored rooms if you fancy risking the time. The (approximate) total of 18 minutes given for each playthrough probably makes it clear that this game is intended to be replayed, each time getting that little bit further through the tower and mastering the strategies required for each boss.

Ultimately, it’s most likely Black Future ’88’s visuals which will get people talking, and rightly so. The game obviously goes for the pixel art approach, and frankly, there is hardly a lack of games going for that visual style these days. Among the sea of pixel art games, the cyberpunk visual style used here stands out as being masterfully crafted. Right from when you turn on the game, the chromatic aberration used on the title screen to capture not merely a future but a 1980s future demonstrate the care which went into the visual makeup. This is accompanied by a thumping synth-punk soundtrack which is perhaps the loudest thing to come from your Switch’s speakers, ever.

As mentioned, the game derives its longevity through encouraging constant replay and mastering each room, much like most roguelikes. This would imply that the game is pretty darn hard, and it certainly is. It never feels unfair or cheap, though, and the game mechanics feel so natural that they’re almost invisible. Instead, you’re simply required to learn the best way to overcome each foe, avoid their attacks, and make the best use of the skills and arsenal at your disposal.

At the same time, there is no sense that the game is difficult for difficulties’ sake; Black Future ’88 features a rather handy assist mode designed to help players learn the ropes and get used to things before taking off the training wheels. Improvement could also be as simple as finding that character which suits your play style best. Either way, the game is certainly a challenge and this may frustrate those new to the genre, but Black Future ’88 also tries to be as welcoming as possible. For the genre veterans, the Daily Challenge mode also allows the best to show off their progress through said challenges on the leaderboards.

Conclusion

Black Future ‘88 is an intriguing, challenging but also supremely fun and rewarding game. It may be an audio-visual feast, but the tight gameplay, high degree of replayability and the sterling effort that has gone into overcoming many of the criticisms levelled at the genre mean it’s not just a pretty face. If you’re looking for a dose of intense cyberpunk action on your Switch, you can’t go wrong with this one.
