Try To Avoid Updating Katana Zero On Switch If You Value Your Save File

Katana Zero

Katana Zero developer Askiisoft has issued an urgent warning via social media, informing Nintendo Switch players not to update to the latest version of the game as it has the ability to corrupt save data.

“Please don’t update Katana ZERO on Switch. This update is not supposed to be live yet and it will corrupt your save file. This will be fixed immediately.”

Askiisoft further explained how updating the game would not delete existing data but would warn players the save file was corrupted and ask them to reset it. Ideally, it’s best not to touch this game in the meantime.

“Updating the game will not delete your save. If you boot the updated version, the game will say that your save file is corrupted and ask if you want to reset it. If you don’t reset it, then you’ll be fine.”

Fortunately, the problem has already been resolved, but it’s likely going to take a few days before the patch goes live. According to the official Kantana Zero Twitter account, there’ll be a cheat code within the next patch, allowing players to recover their progress if they accidentally reset their save file.

“There will be a cheat code in the next patch to instantly beat the game, allowing you to recover progress if you’ve already reset your save.”

Detective Pikachu Game

At the 2019 Pokémon press conference, The Pokémon Company president and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara announced a follow-up to the 2018 3DS title Detective Pikachu would be released on the Nintendo Switch.

This new game will conclude the original game’s story and will play out differently to the ending featured in the Detective Pikachu film. Although there’s no word on a release date or an official title, it has been revealed Creatures Inc is once again handling the development.

Are you surprised by this announcement? Have you seen the new movie yet starring Ryan Reynolds? Did you play the original game? Tell us in the comments.

News - E3 2019: Doom Eternal -- What We Know And What We Want
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 05-29-2019, 06:33 AM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

E3 2019: Doom Eternal -- What We Know And What We Want

Bethesda has been relatively tight-lipped about its upcoming E3 2019 press conference. However, the one game we do know is at the show is none other than Id Software's Doom Eternal. This sequel to the critically acclaimed Doom reboot is firmly placed upon lists of many's much-anticipated games.

At E3 2019, there's bound to be a ton of new details about the game and footage displaying all manner of over-the-top demon-slaying. But until then, here's what we know about Doom Eternal right now, and what we're hoping to see.

What We Know So Far

The last we saw of Doom Eternal was some new gameplay at a GDC panel following Google's Stadia reveal this past April. Before that, we learned a substantial amount about the game at QuakeCon 2018.

Doom Eternal continues directly after the events of the first game. The forces of Hell have invaded Earth, and the Doom Slayer must stop them by any means necessary. While you'll be spending most of your time on Earth, it appears the game will briefly take place in space on Phobos, the innermost moon of Mars.

As the Doom Slayer this time around, you're equipped with quite a few new mobility options, which includes a dodge maneuver and the ability to swing on poles in the environment. The new suit is decked out with built-in weapons, like a retractable arm-blade and a shoulder mounted launcher. You also have access to what the game calls a Meat Hook, a glorified grappling hook that can latch onto enemies and clear gaps. Power-ups are returning, and it looks like they can enhance your characteristics in a variety of ways--either temporarily or permanently.

New weapons will appear, but we've not seen them much yet. So far, the only guns that have been shown have been from the previous Doom, such as the Combat Shotgun, Super Shotgun, Heavy Cannon, Rocket Launcher, and more. A few of the older guns are returning albeit with some subtle changes. The Plasma Rifle is back and it can now shoot orbs that electrify enemies. On the other hand, some old weapons have been revamped, like the Ballista, which is a new version of the Gauss Cannon that can fire electric bolts.

Classic demons from the franchise's past are getting reintroduced to the reboot continuity. So far we've seen Arch-Viles, Arachnotrons, Imps, Cacodemons, Barons of Hell, and Pain Elementals. To make encounters with these treacherous monstrosities more flashy and exciting, Id Software is implementing new tech to make demon bodies progressively deteriorate in combat as they suffer damage.

Lastly, a surprise addition to Doom Eternal is a new mode called Invasion where other players can jump into your campaign as demons and hunt you down. Though, if you'd play alone, you can turn off the feature.

What's Confirmed At E3

Bethesda has confirmed that Doom Eternal will make an appearance at its E3 2019 press conference. Though, the specifics as to what it will show remains unclear. We'll have to wait and see what sort of heavy-metal-tined demon shooting the company has in store for us this coming June.

What We Hope To See At E3

A lot of the Doom Eternal gameplay has shown off combat either in the fleshy landscapes of Hell on Earth or Phobos. Honestly, we'd love to see what the other locations on Earth look like, like the intriguing demonic temples or sterile underground chambers that point to an even more extensive Doom universe lore this time around.

No Caption Provided

We'd also love to see gameplay demonstrating how much the new maneuverability options impact combat. We're curious about the new enemy types they're introducing that take advantage of your expanded toolset, as well as the obstacles presented that will break up the flow of battle. In addition, we'd like to see how maneuverability impacts the PvP antics of the Invasion mode.

As a bonus, it would be cool to see how Doom Eternal runs on Switch. Seeing how great the original Doom ran on the hybrid handheld console, we're excited to see how this latest iteration of the series' fast-paced shooting fairs under the humble power of the Nintendo's hardware.

While more gameplay is always a plus, we're mostly hoping that Bethesda caps off its Doom Eternal showcase by finally announcing a release date. For a while, Doom Eternal has been loosely confirmed to launch sometime in 2019, so knowing when we'll get to play it exactly would be fantastic.

  Codeless/Visual Scripting Game Engines
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 05-29-2019, 06:33 AM - Forum: Game Development - No Replies

Codeless/Visual Scripting Game Engines

No-code or codeless systems are becoming more and more common among game engines and they offer a few benefits. Using a visual programming language enables non-programmers to interact with the code in a more tactile way, while the code itself tends to be a bit more self documenting then most scripting or programming languages. Make no mistake, you are still programming, you just aren’t typing in lines of code in a text editor, instead you script logic by defining events and properties or by connecting nodes together in a graph.

If you are interested in game engines with traditional scripting options, be sure to check out our guides to C/C++, C#, Haxe, Lua, JavaScript and Python game engines.

In this article we are going to look at the majority of codeless options among modern game engines, both 2D and 3D.

3D Game Engines

Armory 3D

Built on top of the Blender open source 3D application, this game engine has a node based option for game development, in addition to a Haxe based API.  Learn more here.

clip_image002

BuildBox

BuildBox is a commercial game engine sold on a subscription basis that uses an entirely visual based node programming system.  Aimed at making games without requiring any programming knowledge.

clip_image004

CryEngine

CryEngine is a AAA calibre game engine with a visual programming language named Schematyc.  It is designed to enable programmers to expose portions of their game logic to designers.  Writing a full game in Schematyc is not really the purpose.

clip_image010

CopperCube 6

CopperCube 6 recently received a free version.  It is designed to work by attaching and configuring actions and behaviors to game objects.  You can expend the functionality in JavaScript, but creating a game entirely without coding is quite possible.

Learn more here.

clip_image008

Godot

The Godot game engine has a Visual Scripting Language, with much of the same functionality of GDScript.  You can mix and match between the two scripting styles in the same game.  Honestly though, it’s not really that useful yet.

Learn more here.

clip_image014

Unity

Unity doesn’t actually support Visual Scripting, although a Visual Scripting language is in the works for a 2019 release.  In the meanwhile there are several addons adding a Visual programming language such as Bolt.

clip_image022

Unreal Engine

Unreal has perhaps the most robust visual programming language in the form of Blueprint, that can be used for everything C++ can, beyond changing the engine code itself.  It is also perhaps the most complicated visual programming language on this list.

clip_image024

2D Game Engines

Clickteam Fusion 2.5

Perhaps most famous for making the 5 Nights series of games, this game engine use a tree/spreadsheet hybrid approach.

Learn more here.

clip_image006

Construct 3

Construct 3 is a commercial, subscription based game engine that runs entirely in the browser.  Uses an event sheet programming model very similar to GDevelop and ClickTeam Fusion.

Learn more here.

VSConstruct3

Stencyl

Stencyl is a game engine using a lego style brick approach to programming.  There is a free version available and the visual programming language ultimately generates Haxe code, which you can also code with.

Learn more here.

clip_image018

Scratch

Scratch is an MIT project aimed at teach programming concepts to kids.  It, like Stencyl, uses a lego brick style programming interface.

Learn more here.

clip_image020

GDevelop

GDevelop is a free and open source game engine that uses a programming model based on behaviors and events.

Learn more here.

clip_image012

GameMaker Studio 2

YoYoGame’s GMS2 has been around for decades and is a complete game editing environment with two programming options.  A visual drag and drop programming system, and their own GM scripting language.

Learn more here.

clip_image028

GameSalad

GameSalad is focused at students and non-programmers and is programmed using a behavior based logic system.  I have virtually no experience with this game engine.

clip_image026

Pixel Game Maker MV

Pixel GameMaker MV is a complete commercial game making package from the same publisher as RPGMaker.  It uses a visual programming system and property based programming model.  It’s also pretty awful, IMHO.

News - Mario 3's Angry Sun Looks Weirder Than Ever In Mario Maker 2

Mario 3's Angry Sun Looks Weirder Than Ever In Mario Maker 2

One of the most fun aspects of Super Mario Maker is seeing how the game reimagines certain enemies and items in styles they never originally appeared in, such as seeing airship levels in Super Mario Bros. or Hammer Bros. in Super Mario World. That holds just as true for Super Mario Maker 2, which introduces a new assortment of items to the toolset, including Super Mario 3's angry sun. Naturally, we had to see how the iconic enemy looked in other Mario styles, and we were a little horrified by the result.

We recently had a chance to go hands-on with Super Mario Maker 2 at a demo event in New York, where we got to tinker around with the game's course builder. We chose Super Mario World as the style for our level, and of course, the first enemy we placed in it was the angry sun, which behaves just as you remember, swooping down to singe you every few seconds. You can take a look at our creation in the video above.

While the angry sun looks as you'd expect it to in the Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World styles, the enemy takes on a different appearance in the New Super Mario Bros. U style. As you can see in the screenshot below, the sun's angry grimace becomes a dead-eyed stare, which somehow makes it even more unsettling as it torments you throughout the stage.

No Caption Provided

The angry sun is only one of a myriad of new customization options available in Super Mario Maker 2. Nintendo gave us a closer look at a handful of other new enemies and items during this month's Mario Maker 2 Direct. And unlike the original Super Mario Maker, you won't need to wait to unlock them; almost all of the game's tools will be available from the start, so you'll be able to jump in and play around with them right away. The game also features a story mode and online multiplayer, the latter of which is a first for a Super Mario platformer.

Super Mario Maker 2 launches for Switch on June 28. The game requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play and share levels online. An individual 12-month membership typically costs $20, but Nintendo is bundling a year's subscription with a copy of Super Mario Maker 2 for $70, which amounts to a $10 savings. You can read more details about the bundle in our Super Mario Maker 2 pre-order guide.
