Wonderful 101 Kickstarter Backers Hit With Customs Charges And Handling Fees

Wonderful 101

The Wonderful 101: Remastered Kickstarter campaign was a huge success, but admittedly the release of the game (both digitally and physically) hasn’t gone quite as smoothly. Most recently, backers located in the UK have reported being hit with import fees of about £17.00.

An email we received from Nintendo Life user farmer_humpf informed us about how they had received a note from Royal Mail to tell them that their copy of The Wonderful 101: Remastered would not be delivered because of an “unpaid customs and handling fee” of £16.82.

If I pay this fee I will have paid over £50 for a late copy of the game. I could have ordered the game from BASE in the UK for £32.

This isn’t an isolated case, either. If you look over on the game’s Kickstarter comments page you’ll see similar complaints – with a lot of backers also mentioning how they’ve paid a premium price, waited for months, and could have acquired the game much sooner (and cheaper) if they didn’t support the campaign.

Many backers on Kickstarter believe this is Platinum’s fault and have pointed out how it made “no mention” of import fees.

According to Kickstarter’s Support section, this must be made clear in the reward description and in the project description. Backers in other parts of Europe have also reported copping a similar fee.

Have you had to fork out a bit extra to get your copy delivered? Tell us down below.

Ubisoft Teases Hyper Scape, Reportedly A New Battle Royale Game

Update: Not long after word of the game first surfaced, Ubisoft's teaser site has gone live, confirming the Hyper Scape name. The website itself doesn't offer a lot of information about the game, instead focusing on some of the lore surrounding it, and in particular, a company names Prisma Dimensions. More importantly, it points to a specific date--Hyper Scape will apparently be revealed on July 2, or we'll at least be learning more about it then. Some additional art has also surfaced online, as seen in the tweet below.

Original story: The biggest publishers in gaming have each taken their shot with successful triple-A battle royale games like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, and it looks like Ubisoft is about to try its hand at it. According to esports reporter Rod Breslau, the publisher will tease a new game called Hyper Scape this week, which is a battle royale game set in a virtual world.

As with Apex Legends and Valorant before it, Breslau says that Ubisoft has invited many streamers, YouTubers, and other gaming influencers to see the game for themselves ahead of a closed beta next week. He further claims that Hyper Scape offers an unprecedented "a level of integration" with Twitch, with Twitch chat able to directly impact play with events and the like. He offered an example in a follow-up tweet: viewers will be able to vote for either speed or health boost items, and they will earn progress by watching games. Streamers will also garner revenue for bit purchases.

  News - Poll: Box Art Brawl #49 – Bust-A-Move / Puzzle Bobble

Poll: Box Art Brawl #49 – Bust-A-Move / Puzzle Bobble

Main

Welcome once again to Box Art Brawl, our weekly poll to discover which of three regional box art variants sits at the top of the tree.

Last week we scrutinised Natsume’s Wild Guns on Super NES. Following a classic Western-style gunfight, North America emerged from the smoke victorious, growling at second place Japan and third place Europe to leave town and never return.

This week we’re sticking with 16-bits and taking a look at Taito’s tile-matching puzzle game Puzzle Bobble, or Bust-a-Move as it’s known in North America. Most recently, we’ve seen dragons Bub and Bob on Switch in Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, a game North America is still waiting for, although the Neo Geo version of Puzzle Bobble is available as part of Hamster’s ACA Neo Geo range on Switch.

Right, let’s bust some bubbles.

Japan

JP

The Super Famicom version is relatively clean and quiet, with Bub and Bob at the bottom, a bunch of multicoloured bubbles rising through the middle and the bulbous title bursting out of a yellow foam at the top. The lower half’s gradiated blue-purple background stops the white border looking stale and you end up with a cheery, colourful cover.

Top it off with the sweet Taito and Super Famicom logos at the top and it’s a strong start from the Japanese.

Europe

EU

Europeans got a pale pink border around a bubbly piece of art featuring the dragons. This one gives you more of an idea of the gameplay, with the pointer firing at the bubbles and popping several of them. It uses the same title as the Japanese version, with the Bust-a-Move subtitle added just beneath.

The pink is a little insipid, but there’s more than enough colour elsewhere and we like that it communicates something about the game, too. Not bad.

North America

NA

We must remember that this game released in the mid-’90s, and kids in the ’90s hated cute things. If it wasn’t rude, lacked ‘tude, or seemed in any way ‘kiddy’, Western gamers apparently wouldn’t touch it. Consequently, Bub and Bob got ousted in North America in favour of a grittier, more serious cover. The pointer looks like the Eiffel Tower transformed into a laser cannon and the planetoid ‘bubbles’ don’t pop here, they explode! The background suggests we’re in some sort of digital cyberspace here, with celestial bodies going nova as you shoot them. Far out!

The new title gets a hard-edged font treatment and the only thing missing is a tagline to let us know this ain’t for kids.

It’s sure different. It’s not bad per se, but we’ve taken against it for the way it treats gamers like idiots who refuse to look past the surface to the gameplay beneath. Then again, we’ve seen time and again covers in the West reworked to give them an ‘edge’ (hello angry-eyed Kirby!), so maybe the marketing people knew what they were doing. Maybe we were all idiots in the ’90s.

Time to bust-a-groove and click your favourite below. Hit the ‘Vote’ button after that and you’ll have voted – jolly good show!

Thanks for joining us this week. Let us know how you picked below, and we’ll see you next time.

Here’s Your Very First Look At The Cuphead Show “Coming Soon” To Netflix

Cuphead

Cuphead has been ported across to the Nintendo Switch and even featured as a Mii Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and now the next step is to transform the run ‘n gun platformer into a Netflix series.

Yes, in case you didn’t already know, last July Netflix announced it would be releasing an animated series called The Cuphead Show! – starring both Cuphead and his brother Mugman. Netflix has now shared a first-look:

As noted in the short clip, Tru Valentino will be voicing Cuphead and Frank Todaro is taking on the role of Mugman.

According to Netflix, the series will follow the misadventures of the two characters from the hit video game. There’s no mention of a release date, but apparently it’s “coming soon” to the popular streaming platform.

What do you think of this animation so far, based on the above peek? Leave a comment below.

The Last Of Us Part 2: Every Easter Egg And Reference We've Found

The Last of Us Part II is now out and it contains plenty of callbacks to the first game and references to other pieces of pop culture. In the following article, we're going to focus on that latter group--so here's every single Easter egg we've found in The Last of Us Part II. We're going to be talking about several moments throughout the game, so turn back now if you want to avoid spoilers.

If you want to know about all the callbacks to the first game, we've got you covered there as well. In the video embedded below, Evan Langer and Jake Dekker detail all of the Easter eggs, callbacks, and references in Part II--which includes all of the items, scenes, and dialogue that are in reference to The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Left Behind.

So right at the beginning of the game, Joel plays the guitar and sings for Ellie. The song is real--it's Pearl Jam's "Future Days," which was officially released on October 11, 2013. Of course, with Outbreak Day occurring on September 26, 2013, the song was never actually released in the world of The Last of Us. Joel likely heard Pearl Jam perform "Future Days" live (it was first performed in July of that year) and managed to memorize the song or happened upon a CD that was locked away in some warehouse somewhere just waiting to be distributed.

Square Enix Will Announce Several New Titles Between July And August

Square Enix - Logo

It’s been a very different year for the video game industry so far. Instead of the usual E3 conferences taking place all within the same week, publishers have decided to spread things out and host their own online events. Other companies have been dropping individual announcements. Nintendo, for example, surprised us with Paper Mario: The Origami King.

While we’ve already seen broadcasts and presentations for Pokémon and publishers like EA, there’s still more to come. Ubisoft is hosting its own online event on 12th July, but what about the Japanese giant Square Enix? During a stockholders meeting this week, the third-party company said it would instead be announcing new titles “individually” between July and August.

There were already reports in May about Square Enix ditching its E3 replacement show and this makes it official. Here is the full exchange, courtesy of No Investment, No Life:

Question: Normally, you would announce new games at E3, but how has coronavirus affected your plans this year?

Answer: We would normally announce new games at E3, yes. We had planned to have a press conference as a replacement event, but were unable to do so since assets were not complete. We’ll be announcing new titles individually as the timing permits. Several will debut around July to August.

One game already announced by Square Enix during the time E3 would normally take place is the brand new rhythm music title, Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. The good news is it’s been confirmed for a western release on the Nintendo Switch and will be arriving at some point this Fall.

As for the several titles Square Enix has planned – what do you think they could be, and do you expect any of them to make their way to the Nintendo Switch? Share your thoughts down below.

Margot Robbie To Star In New Pirates Of The Caribbean Movie

Margot Robbie is set to star in a woman-led Pirates of the Caribbean film from the Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson. Originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the new film is separate from both the Johnny Depp led film series and the new reboot series already being developed by the Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

The Pirates of Caribbean franchise has been incredibly successful, grossing $4.5 billion across the five films. The most recent release, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales, had the second lowest gross of the series at $795 million, with the only film making less than the original Curse of the Black Pearl.

Hodson recently worked with Robbie on Birds of Prey and has already been tapped to write for the upcoming Flash (which might feature Michael Keaton returning as Batman) and Batgirl movies, after previously writing for the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. Robbie's other recent films have been Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and she'e set to appear in the upcoming The Suicide Squad from James Gunn.

  [Tut] The Most Pythonic Way to Remove Multiple Items From a List
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 06-29-2020, 01:37 AM - Forum: Python - No Replies

The Most Pythonic Way to Remove Multiple Items From a List

Python’s built-in list data structure has many powerful methods any advanced Python programmer must be familiar with. However, some operations on lists can’t be performed simply by calling the right method.

You can add a single item to a list using the method append(item) on the list. If you want to add a list of items to another list, there is the method expand(items) which does the job for you.

The same holds if you want to delete an item from a list, you simply call the method remove(item)and you get the desired outcome.

But, did you ever wonder how to delete a list of items from a given list? Or what if the indices of the items to be deleted were given, how would you do that?

These were the questions I was asking myself in one of my latest hobby projects. Therefore I decided to find out the most Pythonic way to do that.

Problem

Let’s frame our problem like this: Given a list of Task items, how can we remove all items from the list which are marked as done?

Currently the implementation looks as follows:

class Task: def __init__(self, title): self.title = title self.done = False self.done_by = None def is_done(self): return self.done def set_done(self, name): self.done = True self.done_by = name def __repr__(self): state = f'was done by {self.done_by}' if self.done else 'is not done' s = f'Task: {self.title} {state}' return s todo_list = [ Task('Clean House'), Task('Walk Dog'), Task('Buy Bread'), Task('Repair Car'), Task('Plant Tree'), Task('Water Flowers'), Task('Bake Cake')
] todo_list[0].set_done('Bob')
todo_list[2].set_done('Alice')
todo_list[5].set_done('Bob') # print the whole list
print(todo_list)

So, how can we clean up our todo list so that it contains only tasks that have not yet been done?

Solutions

The following solutions can be divided into two groups:

  1. Delete elements of given indices
  2. Delete elements by a certain condition

Any solution of the first type can also be used to delete the elements by a given condition. To accomplish this, all we have to do, is iterate once over the input list, check the condition and store the indices of the elements for which the condition was True. This can be implemented as follows:

indices = []
for idx, task in enumerate(todo_list): if task.is_done(): indices.append(idx)

Since it takes one iteration of the list to find the indices, this adds O(n) to the runtime complexity. Yet, since any solution has at least a time complexity of O(n), we can neglect this first step.

Method 1: Remove a Single Item From the List and Repeat in a Loop

As mentioned before, there are methods to remove a single item from a list, either by value or by index.

Therefore one solution to remove several items is to use a method that removes a single item and executes it in a loop. Though, there is a pitfall to this solution. After we remove the element at index 0, all the other elements shift, and their indices change because the element at index 1 is now at index 0 and so on.

This is how the solution would look as code:

1.1. Remove using pop()

The list.pop() method removes and returns the last element from an existing list. The list.pop(index) method with the optional argument index removes and returns the element at the position index.

indices = [0, 2, 5] # must be ordered!
shift = 0
for i in indices: todo_list.pop(i-shift) shift += 1

Well, probably this looks a bit awkward to you, and be reassured, it’s not the way you would do it in Python!

To avoid shifting, we can reverse sort the list of indices so that we can remove the items from end to start:

indices = [0, 2, 5]
for i in sorted(indices, reverse=True): todo_list.pop(i)

1.2. Remove using remove()

A slightly simpler solution, but still not the best solution, uses the method remove(item).

We iterate over the list and check for each item if it satisfied the condition so that it can be deleted. This solution would look like this:

for task in todo_list: if task.is_done(): todo_list.remove(task)

Be careful if you use remove(item) on a list of simple data types like integers. The function remove() deletes the first occurrence of the given value from the list!

In all of the above solutions, we performed the deletion in-place, which means, we kept the initial instance of the list.

By now you should see, a good solution to the problem is not that obvious.

1.3. Remove using itemgetter() and remove()

If you use the function itemgetter from the module operator there is another interesting solution which is basically an improvement of solution 1.1.

The function itemgetter takes an arbitrary number of indices and returns all the elements from those indices in a tuple. Here is the implementation of the proposed solution:

from operator import itemgetter indices = [0, 2, 5]
for item in (itemgetter(*idx)(todo_list)): xs.remove(item)

But still, the code is more complex than it needs to be.

Method 2. Remove Multiple Items from a List

In the previous solutions, we simply adapted functionality for deleting a single element so that we could use it inside a loop. In this section, we take a look at more Pythonic solutions for the problem.

2.1. Remove all elements from a list

If you want to remove all elements from the list, there is a very simple solution: Use the list class’s method clear(). It removes all elements from the list in-place.

2.2. Remove a slice from a list

If your elements are in a continuous range or if they have a least equal distances from each other a simple way to delete multiple elements from a list is using the keyword del together with slicing.

This could look like this:

del todo_list[1::2]

It deletes the elements in-place, however, it doesn’t help if we want to delete randomly distributed elements from our list.

2.3. Remove randomly distributed elements from a list using set operations

First, we iterate over the list once and extract all items to be deleted. Then, we convert both lists to sets and perform the removal using set operations. This looks as follows:

done = []
for task in todo_list: if task.is_done(): done.append(task) todo_list = list(set(todo_list) - set(done))

Under the hood, a set in Python is a hashmap that allows performing certain operations on sets very fast (O(1)). Unfortunately we have to convert from a list to a set and back, so that we loose the advantage in speed. And again, we end up with an O(n) solution.

Fore more information about the computational complexity of Python operations, check out our detailed article about the topic.

This solution doesn’t work in-place and is a bit difficult to read due to the many conversions between data structures.

2.4. Remove randomly distributed elements from a list using list comprehension

The best way to do this in Python is actually very close to what we saw in the first section of this article where we iterated over the list and removed the elements for which a certain condition was True.

However, in this solution, we will proceed the other way round: We iterate over the old list and create a new list to which we add all the elements that we want to keep. Obviously, we have to create a new list to achieve this, so the solution won’t work in-place.

Python provides just what we need to get the desired result in one single line of code: list comprehensions.

todo_list = [task for task in todo_list if not task.is_done()]

If we assign the result of the list comprehension back to our initial todo_list variable, this variable will now point to a list that contains only tasks that weren’t done yet.

After the above line of code, the memory address to which the variable todo_list points has changed!

However, that’s how you should delete several elements from a list in Python. If you want to do this in-place, there is also a one-line solution to the problem, though, I personally wouldn’t recommend you to use this.

Here is the code:

[todo_list.remove(task) for task in todo_list if task.is_done()]

Be honest, how long did you take to wrap your head around that?

We use a dummy list comprehension in which we delete the selected elements from the initial list, finally we throw away the list comprehension’s resulting list.

So, what we actually do is to abuse the list comprehension to iterate over todo_list and delete items from it.

Conclusion

Depending on the distribution of the items in the list, there are different solutions.

  1. If you want to remove all elements from a list, use the list’s method clear().
  2. If you want to remove a continuous range from the list or if you want to delete items with equal distances between, use slicing with the operator del l[start:stop].
  3. If you want to remove randomly distributed elements, use a list comprehension which selects only the elements you want to keep – this is the solution I recommend.

Obviously, there are more possibilities to solve the problem, yet, the solutions presented in this article are the most common ones and also the easiest to understand. If you find another great solution, feel free to contact us! We would love to see it.
