Poll: Box Art Brawl #45 – Phalanx

Main

And we’re back with another edition of Box Art Brawl, your weekly opportunity to peruse covers of video games past and pick your favourite.

Last week we checked out Super C, although Super C didn’t actually win the vote. Nope, it was the European Probotectors who took the title with a small but significant (and surprising) margin over North America’s Billy and Lance. Who would have thought a couple of robots could take the crown from the Contra legends?

This week we’re looking at one of gaming’s most infamous box art images, at least in the West. The story behind the off-kilter North American cover is an interesting one (far more interesting than the game inside the box) and it has gone down as one of the most notoriously covers in video gaming history. It’s got a high WTF-factor, but we’ve seen far worse and the ‘banjo man’ cover certainly grabs your attention.

But should that be a factor in your voting? That, my friends, is up to you…

Japan

JP

We begin in Japan. A ship (which resembles an Imperial Shuttle with a giant transparent green phallus bolted on the front) flies over a city revealed through an otherwise cloud-covered planet surface. Billowing orb-like explosions fill the air and the top fin and cockpit (careful with your emphasis, there) break the border of the square image, bursting out into the white/blue of the long Super Famicom box.

The logo is understated and effective, there’s an upside-down red Triforce, and the Super Famicom and Kemco logos are both classily subtle. It’s a shame that the game is a bit rubbish, but we don’t dislike this cover.

Europe

EU

Europe uses the same key art as Japan, although the contrast has been blown out and the colours muted. We get a wider view of the planet below and more explosions are visible. The logo is a little generic, and there’s a lot of black space in the border here which might have been put to better use.

Not awful, but a better job could have been made using the same components.

North America

NA

Ah, banjo guy. In order to indicate what the game actually is, the infamous North American cover gains a tagline: “THE HYPER-SPEED SHOOT-OUT IN SPACE”. There’s also a small ship added above the tag, although it’s difficult to tell if it’s flying towards or away from the old bearded banjo player.

The juxtaposition here draws your attention, and we also like the logo on this one, with the letters gradually shedding their pigment as ‘dust’, or something, as you move along the word to the ‘X’ (and the tiny trademark symbol).

As box art goes, it’s a difficult one to evaluate. In many respects, it’s incredibly successful at what it does. How many of us would never have heard of Phalanx were it not for this cover? In terms of capturing attention on store shelves, it did very well.

Many believe that great box art should communicate something about how the game plays to the viewer. We’re not sure we agree, but we’re not the ones voting – that’s in your hands, dear reader!

Banjo dude or phallic gunship? That’s your choice this week. Click your favourite cover and hit the ‘Vote’ button to let us know your pick below:

And so ends the 45th round of the boxiest of art-based brawls. We’ll see you next week for Round #46.

Pokemon Go Is Going Down For Maintenance Today

Update: As previously announced, Pokemon Go will be down for much of today, June 1. Developer Niantic is taking the hit mobile game offline to perform server maintenance from 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET to 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET. The title will be completely inaccessible during this period of time, so you won't be able to log in and play, but once the maintenance period concludes you'll have plenty of June events to look forward to. The original story follows.

Pokemon Go will be unplayable for much of Monday, June 1. Developer Niantic has announced it is taking the game offline around the world that day while it performs extended server maintenance.

The maintenance period is expected to last for about seven hours, from 11 AM PT (2 PM ET) to 6 PM PT (9 PM ET). During that time, the game will be inaccessible, so you won't be able to log in and play until the maintenance concludes.

Nintendo’s Latest Patent Protects IC Tags Within Soft Toys

Like plush amiibo

Nintendo recently filed a patent that intends to prevent damage to IC tags within soft toys.

As weird as this may sound, it seems to actually refer to the NFC feature contained within plush amiibo. One example of this is the Yarn Yoshi amiibo which was released in 2015.

A similar patent dating back to 31st March of the same year (not long after the arrival of the yarn amiibo) was also rejected by the Japan Patent Office.

Here’s the full summary of the patent, courtesy of Japanese Nintendo:

The requisites of the application are a stuffed toy with an outer surface and a filler. The bottom portion of the stuffed toy is a flat surface with an IC tag attached to this area, which has been reinforced, and a decorative area.

The reinforced area must have a hardness that is harder to bend than the IC tag therefore prevents the IC tag itself from bending. The outer material is a second material which is softer than the first material. The reinforced area is sandwiched between the cover and decorative areas.

The user then holds the bottom portion of the stuffed toy over a reader / writer or sits the bottom of the toy on the reader / writer. The tag information can then be read or rewritten.

News - Fortnite Doomsday Event Start Date: When Does The Device Start?

Fortnite Doomsday Event Start Date: When Does The Device Start?

Epic Games is gearing up for another huge Fortnite event to mark the end of Chapter 2, Season 2. Officially called "The Device," the upcoming finale--popularly referred to as the Doomsday live event--is mostly still a mystery. But we do know when it begins, and we have some slight hints about what it could do to the game's battle royale map. Here is everything we know about the Doomsday event so far.

What Is The Doomsday Live Event?

The much-rumored "Doomsday Device" that Fortnite players and leakers have been discussing for the past few weeks is at the core of this event, with some speculating that the large orb-shaped device with pipes running everywhere in Midas's office is The Device. The introduction of the Storm the Agency challenges in the game's latest update might suggest that Team Shadow may soon usurp Team Ghost in the Agency, which could lead to the device being triggered.

When Is The Doomsday Event?

The Doomsday live event begins on June 6 at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET, which is about a week past when the doomsday clocks were originally suggesting in the game. Epic Games says space is limited so you should show up 30 minutes beforehand, and it will only take place once. Presumably this event (officially called The Device) will coincide with an updated countdown clock reaching zero in order to add some extra tension. Because of the updated animations for swimming, it's predicted that some of the battle royale map could be sent underwater as part of the event. This would create a radically-different environment for the beginning of Season 3, assuming the changes are story-centric and semi-permanent.

[Tut] Python Join List [Ultimate Guide]
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 06-01-2020, 09:43 AM - Forum: Python - No Replies

Python Join List [Ultimate Guide]

In this ultimate guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about joining list elements in Python. To give you a quick overview, let’s have a look at the following problem.

Problem: Given a list of elements. How to join the elements by concatenating all elements in the list?

Example: You want to convert list ['learn ', 'python ', 'fast'] to the string 'learn python fast'.

Quick Solution: to convert a list of strings to a string, do the following.

  • Call the ''.join(list) method on the empty string '' that glues together all strings in the list and returns a new string.
  • The string on which you call the join method is used as a delimiter between the list elements.
  • If you don’t need a delimiter, just use the empty string ''.

Code: Let’s have a look at the code.

lst = ['learn ', 'python ', 'fast']
print(''.join(lst))

The output is:

learn python fast

Try it yourself in our interactive Python shell:

You can also use another delimiter string, for example, the comma:

lst = ['learn' , 'python', 'fast']
print(','.join(lst))
# learn,python,fast

Python Join List Syntax

Python Join List of Lists

Python Join List of Strings With Comma

Problem: Given a list of strings. How to convert the list to a string by concatenating all strings in the list—using a comma as the delimiter between the list elements?

Example: You want to convert list ['learn', 'python', 'fast'] to the string 'learn, python, fast'.

Solution: to convert a list of strings to a string, call the ','.join(list) method on the delimiter string ',' that glues together all strings in the list and returns a new string.

Code: Let’s have a look at the code.

lst = ['learn', 'python', 'fast']
print(','.join(lst))

The output is:

learn,python,fast

Python Join List of Strings With Newline

Problem: Given a list of strings. How to convert the list to a string by concatenating all strings in the list—using a newline character as the delimiter between the list elements?

Example: You want to convert list ['learn', 'python', 'fast'] to the string 'learn\npython\nfast' or as a multiline string:

'''learn
python
fast'''

Solution: to convert a list of strings to a string, call the '\n'.join(list) method on the newline character '\n' that glues together all strings in the list and returns a new string.

Code: Let’s have a look at the code.

lst = ['learn', 'python', 'fast']
print('\n'.join(lst))

The output is:

learn
python
fast

Python Join List of Strings With Space

Problem: Given a list of strings. How to convert the list to a string by concatenating all strings in the list—using a space as the delimiter between the list elements?

Example: You want to convert list ['learn', 'python', 'fast'] to the string 'learn python fast'. (Note the empty spaces between the terms.)

Solution: to convert a list of strings to a string, call the ' '.join(list) method on the string ' ' (space character) that glues together all strings in the list and returns a new string.

Code: Let’s have a look at the code.

lst = ['learn', 'python', 'fast']
print(' '.join(lst))

The output is:

learn python fast

Python Join List With Single and Double Quotes

Problem: Given a list of strings. How to convert the list to a string by concatenating all strings in the list—using a comma character followed by an empty space as the delimiter between the list elements? Additionally, you want to wrap each string in double quotes.

Example: You want to convert list ['learn', 'python', 'fast'] to the string '"learn", "python", "fast"' :

Solution: to convert a list of strings to a string, call the ', '.join('"' + x + '"' for x in lst) method on the delimiter string ', ' that glues together all strings in the list and returns a new string. You use a generator expression to modify each element of the original element so that it is enclosed by the double quote " chararacter.

Code: Let’s have a look at the code.

lst = ['learn', 'python', 'fast']
print(', '.join('"' + x + '"' for x in lst))

The output is:

"learn", "python", "fast"

Python Join List With None

Python Join List With Tabs

Python Join List With Delimiter

Python Join List With Carriage Return

Python Join List with Underscore

Python Join List of Integers

Problem: You want to convert a list into a string but the list contains integer values.

Example: Convert the list [1, 2, 3] to a string '123'.

Solution: Use the join method in combination with a generator expression to convert the list of integers to a single string value:

lst = [1, 2, 3]
print(''.join(str(x) for x in lst))
# 123

The generator expression converts each element in the list to a string. You can then combine the string elements using the join method of the string object.

If you miss the conversion from integer to string, you get the following TypeError:

lst = [1, 2, 3]
print(''.join(lst)) '''
Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\xcent\Desktop\code.py", line 2, in <module> print(''.join(lst))
TypeError: sequence item 0: expected str instance, int found '''

New Amazon Listing Teases Second Unannounced Take-Two Game For Switch

Nintendo Switch Logo

June is an incredibly exciting time for the video game industry, but this year things will obviously be quite different. Despite the cancellation of E3, there’ll still be plenty of reveals and digital shows to watch online. So what exactly is happening on the Nintendo front?

If multiple listings dating back to earlier this week are anything to go by, it seems there’ll be a lot of titles announced for the Switch during this period. Now, according to GoNintendo, one extra unannounced Switch title has been listed. Once again, it’s been spotted on Amazon France, and this time it’s from Take-Two Interactive – making it the second Switch listing on behalf of this company.

The placeholder itself isn’t much to look at, but here it is anyway:

Amazon FranceNintendo Life

For those unfamiliar with Take-Two Interactive, it’s the parent company of both Rockstar Games and 2K. With two unannounced Switch games on the way, surely at least one of them is a basketball game – perhaps a new NBA 2K or another Playgrounds title? Or how about some GTA? We’ll try not to get our hopes up.

You can read more about the existing third-party listings on Amazon in our original post. And to see the four Nintendo ones check out this post. What Switch game do you think this latest listing could be for? Share your thoughts below.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Receives A Day One Update

Update: Make that two!

Shulk

It seems Nintendo and Monolith Soft have actually released two updates for Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition on launch day. Not only did the game receive Version 1.1.1, but it also got Version 1.1.0 (as suspected).

The full official patch notes for both updates have now been made available on the Nintendo support website and as you can see they contain a lot of fixes. We hope this clears up any confusion.

Ver. 1.1.1 (Released May 28, 2020)

General Issues

  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Arts Palette from closing when no selectable arts were available during a Chain Attack.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Arts Palette from closing when no selectable arts were available during a Chain Attack and the Junk Sword was equipped.

Ver. 1.1.0 (Released May 28, 2020)

General Issues

  • Fixed lockups that sometimes occurred on skip-travel and event-scene transition screens.
  • Fixed an issue with the quest Finding Happiness where the incorrect speaker name was being displayed.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented Status and Item details from displaying when the cursor was moved quickly between Cosmetic Equipment and Equipment on the Change Equipment screen.
  • The buff icon now updates with the physical and ether defense buffs received and lost when the Monado Art “Armor” is activated and expires.
  • Fixed the following issues with the enemy party of Leg Volffs when Napping Volffen moved toward the waterfall by the Volff Lair:
    • Leg Volffs would continually move around and respawn in a small area, with an additional Leg Volff suddenly appearing.
    • The Leg Volffs would stop at the watering hole instead of moving with Napping Volffen when it appeared.
    • Battling any remaining Leg Volffs would cause the battle to end abruptly, and battles would start and stop as soon as you entered their line of sight.
  • Fixed an issue where sound effects would continue into the subsequent scene when event skip was used during a scene where the future is shown.
  • Fixed an issue where continuing to use the debuff skill “Lock-on” on an enemy would cause it to target only the first user of the skill.
  • Fixed a lockup that occurred in the Central Pit when boarding the elevator with your controlled character at a certain time during its descent.

What do you think of all of these fixes? What other fixes would you like to see made to the game in a future update? Leave a comment down below.

Minecraft Studio Gets Updated Name To Reflect Expansion

Minecraft developer Mojang is moving into the new decade with a new name--or at least a very slightly revised one. The company has been opening more offices around the world as it expands its focus beyond the popular freeform creation game. As a result, it has changed its name from Mojang to Mojang Studios, with an accompanying logo revision to match. It's even released an accompanying video to showcase the changes, and you can watch it below.

The news comes just as Minecraft celebrates its 11th anniversary recently, with the first version having been released back in May 2009. It's also celebrating a massive milestone: 200 million copies of Minecraft have been sold, with a huge number of active players every month.

The new logo is made up of little gadgets called "Mojangs," appropriately enough, and in the trailer they are turned and twisted around to spell out the studio's name. It sounds like it won't be the last time we hear about the somewhat sentient gizmos, and they should pop up again as we learn about future Mojang Studios projects.
