The open-world sandbox game Minecraft has had another strong year of support from its developer and playerbase, and to top it off, it’s been recognised as the most-watched game on YouTube in 2019, with 100.2 billion views.
Since its official launch in 2011, the game has been released on just about every platform at this point – including the Nintendo Switch – and has been described as one of the greatest video games of all-time. It’s also won multiple awards, become one of the best-selling games, is used as an educational tool and is suitable for all ages – so it’s not necessarily a surprise it remains relevant to this day.
Following up in second place was another game available on the Switch: Fortnite. Epic’s battle royale was the most viewed game in this popular genre this year and even hosted an in-game concert in 2019 featuring DJ Marshmello, which was viewed more than 44 million times. All up, this title had 60.9 billion views this year.
Fortnite was followed by Rock Star’s Grand Theft Auto V in third (36.9 billion views), the mobile battle royale title Garena Free Fire placed fourth (29.9 billion views), and Roblox was in fifth (29.6 billion views). The other five games on the list were a combination of battle royale and MOBA titles.
