Back in May, we got our hands on Nintendo’s latest fiscal year earnings report, revealing that the lifetime sales total for Switch hardware had reached 55.77 million as of 31st March 2020. In that year, from 1st April 2019 to the end of March 2020, Nintendo managed to shift 21.03 million units.

At the time, we suspected that the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the global coronavirus pandemic may have given Nintendo a significant boost in that last month, possibly helping to nudge the console’s sales a little further than we would have previously anticipated. Now, thanks to a new report from GoldenCasinoNews, we can see exactly how it all went down.

According to the report, 4.2 million of those 21.03 million sales came in March alone, meaning that March accounted for almost a fifth of that entire year’s hardware sales. You’d usually expect to see stats like this over the holiday season, but not during a relatively average month in the calendar year.

The report also breaks down Nintendo Switch hardware sales by region, revealing that North America has so far generated the majority of console sales (20.61 million units sold as of May 2020), with Europe and Japan next in line with 14.3 million and 13.4 million, respectively.

Are you one of the 4.2 million who bought a Switch in March? Are you surprised to see that the console had such a significant jump in sales? Let us know below.
