Deals: Switch Lite’s Price Drops To Black Friday Level In The UK

Switch Lite© Nintendo Life

Update: The Game Collection is running a 5% off everything code running this weekend, which takes the cost of a Switch Lite down to less than £168. The code is ‘5TARTGAME‘ and is valid until midnight on January 19th. (Thanks, farmer_humpf!)

Original Story: With the standard Switch proving to be surprisingly hard to find these days, there’s a good chance that prospective owners of Nintendo’s latest console may be turning their attention to the more abundant Switch Lite – and if you’re one such person and you’re based in the UK, then you’ll want to take a look at this killer deal.

UK store The Game Collection is selling the two of the three available colour options of the Switch Lite console (the grey unit is out of stock at the time of writing) for just £175.95, including postage costs. That kind of offer hasn’t been seen for quite some time, so it’s definitely worth snapping up if you’re in the market for a Lite right now.

Will you be picking one of these systems up? Let us know with a comment.

Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 18th)

DSOS

Another week, another dollar – that’s how that goes, right? This one has seen Smash Bros. reveals, patches bringing games up to the standard we’d have liked to see them at launch, and more lovely Switch ports heading our way. And now it’s finally time to sit down and chat about our weekend plans.

Members of Team NL have done just that below and we’d love for you to join in via our poll and comment sections, too. Enjoy!

Gavin Lane, staff writer

Having seen that Neonwall has received a little Labo VR update, I might be tempted to dig out the ol’ Goggles and see how its VR experience holds up on Switch. I managed to ‘finish’ Dead Cells last week (okay, not really – I just completed a run for the first time), so although I’d love to stay the rest of my copious backlog is calling me. Next up is either Hyper Light Drifter or Axiom Verge. From what I hear I can’t lose with either, so I’ll be tossing a coin.

Having won all my gym badges, I’ve also got the endgame of Pokémon Sword and Shield to get down to at some point. I say ‘endgame’, but that’s not really true, is it – there’s loads of post-game, too. Do any games ever actually end these days?!

Austin Voigt, contributing writer

This weekend I’m finally getting around to some of those smaller Switch releases I’ve been wanting to play – specifically Little Town Hero, Doraemon: Story of Seasons and Ni no Kuni. They’ve been sitting in my downloads, waiting for me to dig in for months now. Of course, I’ve played Ni no Kuni on PS3 before, but it’s one of those beautiful games you can easily pick up again on another console and enjoy all over again. We’ve got a giant snowstorm coming, so it should be a fairly relaxed weekend of continuing to make progress on the ol’ backlog!

Ollie Reynolds, reviewer

I won’t be getting around to much gaming this weekend unfortunately, but I’ve recently gotten absolutely addicted to DOOM and DOOM 2, so I’ll no doubt be booting those up during the quieter moments. I bought both of them when they launched on the Switch thanks to the insanely low price, but something definitely felt really off at the time. Thankfully, with the latest patch, they look and play better than I remember, and I’m loving it!

Gonçalo Lopes, contributing writer

I’ve been making some excellent progress in DAEMON X MACHINA and plan to continue to do so this weekend. Astral Chain is taking a back seat because I am still hooked to developing new mobile suits in SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays and mixing up squads. I will probably take a stab at Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore, too, a game that deserves a second chance at the spotlight.

Game of the week is the stylish and surprisingly relaxing Super Crush KO. Gotta keep those S Ranks flying!

Liam Doolan, news reporter

This weekend I’ll be trying out Puzzle & Dragons GOLD on the Nintendo Switch. Although I own the two-in-one Super Mario Bros. Edition on the 3DS, I never really played the Puzzle & Dragons part of the game in the end, so I look forward to seeing what this series has to offer in the latest iteration.

Apart from this, I’m thinking of revisiting Fire Emblem: Three Houses after the recent announcements for it, and if I get any extra time I’ll see how Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE holds up in its encore on Switch. That’s it for me this weekend.

As always, thanks for reading! Make sure to leave a vote in the poll above and a comment below with your gaming choices over the next few days…

News - Cyberpunk 2077 Delay Won't Reduce Crunch, As Long Hours Still Planned
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 01-19-2020, 10:31 AM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

Cyberpunk 2077 Delay Won't Reduce Crunch, As Long Hours Still Planned

As part of a CD Projekt Red press conference following Cyberpunk 2077's five-month delay, the Polish developer confirmed that it will be asking its employees to work extra long hours to finish the much-anticipated role-playing game ahead of its scheduled release in September.

During a Q&A session, CD Projekt Red was asked if the development team would need to "crunch" to finish Cyberpunk 2077. Adam Kicinski, who is CD Projekt Red's joint CEO, confirmed that he expects the team to need to work long hours to finish the game, though he said there is a plan in place to attempt to lessen the periods of crunch.

"To some degree, yes--to be honest," Kicinski said. "We try to limit crunch as much as possible, but it is the final stage. We try to be reasonable in this regard, but yes. Unfortunately."

"Crunch" is the video game industry term for working for an unreasonable and unhealthy amount of time on a project. Typically, but not always, periods of crunch happen near the end of development.

CD Projekt Red is developing Cyberpunk 2077 across its studios in Krakow and Warsaw offices. At PAX Aus in October 2019, CDPR Krakow boss John Mamais told GameSpot everyone at his studio was working "really hard," and that while the staffers can feel rejuvenated by showing the game at tradeshows, this also puts the team "in a vice, in a way."

Mamais also spoke about how CDPR's culture of hard work is not a good fit for everyone. He said CDPR does what it can to limit crunch, but this isn't always possible.

"You sacrifice some things to do that and be part of that. There are a lot of people who come into the industry that are fresh; they don't really understand what it takes to do it," he said. "So we get a lot of new guys coming in, and they go, 'Oh god, this is like too much.' But then we have other guys come in from Rockstar Games, and they're like, 'This is not even crunch!' We're doing the best we can to keep the work under control. But sometimes when you're doing some big-ass game like this, it's not always possible to do that. It takes really hard work to make it really awesome."

It was also confirmed during the Q&A that the Cyberpunk 2077 delay has shifted other projects back as well, as the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer game will now release in 2022 at the soonest. Additionally, although Cyberpunk 2077's new September 17 release date is closer to the releases of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, CDPR still has no plans to support those systems.

CDPR also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has been playable from start to finish for months, but "there's still work to done," which is why the company's board of directors unanimously voted for the delay.

"Night City is massive--full of stories, content and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, and polishing," the company said. "We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect."

Kicinski clarified during the Q&A that some parts of Cyberpunk 2077 were on schedule while others were not. He added that there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the game, only that the studio needs more time for polishing and other efforts related to the size and complexity of the project.

The executive also confirmed during the Q&A that the Cyberpunk 2077 development team was only informed of the delay "minutes" before the official announcement came through.

This is not the first time that CDPR may be crunching on one of its big releases. In 2014, the company was aaccused of crunching for more than one year to finish The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Find out how to pre-order Cyberpunk 2077 and more in our guide to everything Cyberpunk 2077.

Tim Cook reveals surprise behind the scenes look at ‘Little America’

In a Tweet on Saturday Apple CEO Tim Cook shared a new behind the scenes look at the making of “Little America.”

Apple TV+ Little America’ is now streaming

The new series debuted on Apple TV+ on January 16, and features stories inspired by true events in an anthology format.

Little America is written and executive produced by Lee Eisenberg, Kumasi Nanjiani, and Emily V. Gordon. The video depicts the executive producers discussing the show and how it came about.

“We wanted these to be human stories,” says Nanjiani. “These are not stories with any kind of agenda.”

The series was created to represent real stories of immigration to America. “As much as we can, directors are from the same countries of origin as the actors in the episode,” Eisenberg said.

AppleInsider reviewed Little America and considered it a decent show with room to grow. Told in eight separate vignettes, this anthology series examines different people’s immigration experience through time.

Apple TV+ is $5 per month and can be found across all Apple devices, third party set top boxes, and some smart TVs.

News - Game Freak’s Little Town Hero Gets A Big Physical Release This Spring

Game Freak’s Little Town Hero Gets A Big Physical Release This Spring

Little Town Hero

Apart from Pokémon Sword and Shield, Game Freak actually released a few other games last year. One of them was Little Town Hero in October. It ended up being a rather low-key launch and was made available exclusively on the Switch eShop.

That’s all set to change now, though, with NIS America revealing the ‘Big Idea Edition’ of Little Town Hero is coming to the Nintendo Switch this Spring as a physical release. It includes the game, an art book, poster, pin set, official soundtrack, and a collector’s box:

Think big and save the day! Little Town Hero Big Idea Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch in Spring 2020 as a physical release! #LittleTownHero

You can pre-order the ‘Big Idea Edition’ right now from the NIS North American online store for $49.99.

When Little Town Hero was released, we gave it seven out of ten stars in our review and said Game Freak proved that a casual style RPG could still have plenty of imagination, even on a smaller scale.

The game itself is about a boy named Axe who must help protect his village after monsters attack. It also features music by the Undertale creator, Toby Fox.

News - Watchmen Season 2 Is Unlikely As Damon Lindelof Steps Away
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 01-19-2020, 02:00 AM - Forum: Lounge - No Replies

Watchmen Season 2 Is Unlikely As Damon Lindelof Steps Away

Watchmen, the HBO series that followed on from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel, was our favorite television show of 2019. The show, which remixed parts of the original comic and proved incisive and intelligent in its examination of superhero mythology, race, gender, and the world Moore created, was a triumph both critically and commercially.

However, it looks as though a second season is unlikely, with showrunner Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers,) standing by comments he made shortly after the season wrapped.

On the official Watchmen podcast back in December 2019, Lindelof said that it was "unlikely" that he would make a second season, although he seemed open to the notion that a good idea might come to him. This apparently has not happened yet, and Lindelof has reaffirmed to USA Today that he currently has no interest in doing a second season, having told the story he wanted to tell.

Lindelof reportedly said that he has given HBO his blessing to move ahead on a second season without him, but the channel's programming chief, Casey Bloys, said that this was unlikely to happen. "It would be hard to imagine doing it without Damon involved in some way," he said.

However, it sounds like he's interested in whatever Lindelof's next project turns out to be. "We’re very proud of Watchmen, but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do." Bloys says that if Lindelof changes his mind, or wants to approach Watchmen as an "anthology" series akin to True Detective or Fargo, HBO would be keen.

While some viewers might despair over the lack of resolution to the seeming cliffhanger at the end of the series, it's worth noting that Lindelof has said that, in his mind, it's unambiguous what happens next.

News - Java Edition: Combat Snapshot V5

Java Edition: Combat Snapshot V5

Unification.

That is the overall goal Mojang has in mind with this next combat update.  They want Minecrafters to have fun and they want to have balance for PvE and PvP content alike.  The changes we’ll see here will come in a future update to all official editions of Minecraft.  This snapshot is based on the 1.15.2 pre-release and if you want to get a peek at what changes are coming to the combat system you better check it out.  If you’d like to make a suggestion don’t be afraid to check out Mojang’s Feedback website or join in on the conversation on the official Reddit post.

  • Attack rates are generally faster
  • You are only able to attack when the attack timer has recharged
  • The attack timer only resets when attacking (compared to switching items)
  • You can keep pressing the attack button to continuously attack
  • Weapons deal less damage overall
  • Weapons now have different reach (tridents and hoes reach farther, axes reach less)
  • Natural healing from food has been rebalanced (no more saturation boost)
  • Projectiles are more accurate and don’t inherit the shooter’s momentum
  • Experimental enchantment called “Chopping” for axes
  • Many other smaller changes to tridents, snowballs, shields, and knockback mechanics

Read can read about all the changes over time in the Reddit posts: 1234, and 5 (this one)

In detail, weapons:

  • Stone tier lowered to +0 (same as wood, was +1)

  • Iron tier lowered to +1 (was +2)

  • Diamond tier lowered to +2 (was +3)

  • Swords lowered to +2 (was +3)

  • Axes lowered to +3 (was +4)

  • Trident lowered to 5 (was 6)

For example, a Diamond Sword now deals 2+2+2=6 points of damage. This was 2+3+3=8 in the previous test, and 1+3+3=7 in 1.9/1.8 (base damage is 2 now, same as on Bedrock).

In detail, food rebalance:

  • Saturation boost removed

  • Eating food is now slower (40 ticks, was 32 ticks)

  • Natural healing works longer (down to 6 food points, used to be down to 18)

  • Natural healing is faster (every 3 seconds, was 4)

  • New: Natural healing now always drains food points. Saturation is not used when healing damage and is only relevant as a “pause” until food drains (as originally intended)

  • Sprinting is no longer affected by the food value

Other changes:

  • Various block-hitting and air-swinging bug fixes

  • Made it possible to hit players with snowballs (TODO: game rule)

  • Reintroduced upwards knockback when hitting players in the air… Probably too strong right now, but can be balanced later

  • Changed the swing animation to emphasize the rhythm of the attacks

  • Added cooldown to egg

Bonus controversial edit…

  • Added a kind of “Coyote Time” that activates for a fraction of a second if you aim at something but attack outside its bounding box. The background to this change is that since you can’t attack between swings, it often gave the impression that your input was “lost”. It also made fighting small and fast targets (rabbits or baby zombies) unnecessarily frustrating
