Forus Health uses AI to help eradicate preventable blindness
Big problems, shared solutions
Tackling global challenges has been the focus of many health data consortiums that Microsoft is enabling. The Microsoft Intelligent Network for Eyecare (MINE) – the initiative that Chandrasekhar read about – is now part of the Microsoft AI Network for Healthcare, which also includes consortiums focused on cardiology and pathology.
For all three, Microsoft’s aim is to play a supporting role to help doctors and researchers find ways to improve health care using AI and machine learning.
“The health care providers are the experts,” said Prashant Gupta, Program Director in Azure Global Engineering. “We are the enabler. We are empowering these health care consortiums to build new things that will help with the last mile.”
In the Forus Health project, that “last mile” started by ensuring image quality. When members of the consortium began doing research on what was needed in the eyecare space, Forus Health was already taking the 3nethra classic to villages to scan hundreds of villagers in a day. But because the images were being captured by minimally trained technicians in areas open to sunlight, close to 20% of the images were not high quality enough to be used for diagnostic purposes.
“If you have bad images, the whole process is crude and wasteful,” Gupta said. “So we realized that before we start to understand disease markers, we have to solve the image quality problem.”
Now, an image quality algorithm immediately alerts the technician when an image needs to be retaken.
The same thought process applies to the cardiology and pathology consortiums. The goal is to see what problems exist, then find ways to use technology to help solve them.
“Once you have that larger shared goal, when you have partners coming together, it’s not just about your own efficiency and goals; it’s more about social impact,” Gupta said.
And the highest level of social impact comes through collaboration, both within the consortiums themselves and when working with organizations such as Forus Health who take that technology out into the world.
Chandrasekhar said he is eager to see what comes next.
“Even though it’s early, the impact in the next five to 10 years can be phenomenal,” he said. “I appreciated that we were seen as an equal partner by Microsoft, not just a small company. It gave us a lot of satisfaction that we are respected for what we are doing.”

Japanese company Hamster has been doing sterling work of late bringing classic arcade titles to the Switch via its Arcade Archives line, and it’s lining up a release for one of Irem’s most loved shooters.
In The Hunt – known in Japan as Kaitei Daisensō – was originally released in 1993 and was developed by the same core team that would later part company with Irem and form Nazca – the studio which created SNK’s Metal Slug series.
While the gameplay is obviously different from that seminal run-and-gun blaster – this is an underwater, side-scrolling shooter – the similarity in the visual style is clear to see. In The Hunt features some incredible 2D sprite work and gorgeous level design. It was ported to the PlayStation, Saturn and Windows PC back in the day.
The title will hit the Japanese eShop on November 21st, with a price of ¥838.

PSA: Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Is Discounted For PS4, Xbox One, And PC
It's a big week for game releases, with both Pokemon Sword and Shield and Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order hitting stores this Friday, November 15. If you're interested in the latest Star Wars adventure from Respawn, you can save a little extra money on Jedi Fallen Order for all platforms.
EA Access members get 10% off digital games, which drops the price on Jedi Fallen Order to $54 from $60. If you have EA Access, you can take advantage of that discount in the PlayStation Store, where Jedi Fallen Order is available on PS4 for $54.
If you don't have EA Access, you're still in luck when it comes to Xbox One. The Microsoft Store has also slashed the price on Jedi Fallen Order to $54--but EA Access doesn't appear to be necessary to claim the discount. Multiple people on our team were able to make it to checkout without EA Access and were still presented with $54 as the final price.
And if you're looking to buy Jedi Fallen Order on PC, things get even better. Both Walmart and Amazon are offering the standard edition of Jedi Fallen Order on PC for just $49.94. The digital code you receive can be redeemed on Origin.
Jedi Fallen Order will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this Friday, November 15. Unlike other big EA game launches, Jedi Fallen Order has not had an early access trial period for subscribers in order to avoid spoilers (unfortunately, copies still appeared early in the wild). However, pre-loading for the game has already begun. Jedi Fallen Order will reportedly unlock at midnight local time on Friday morning. PC gamers can also get Jedi Fallen Order on Steam, the first EA game to be available on the platform in years.
There's also still time to claim the game's pre-order bonuses--be sure to check out our Jedi Fallen Order pre-order guide for all the details on its bonuses and editions.

These include from the project Dofus Remastered, made by DUSK (Forum Dofus - Twitter). This is a modified variant of Dofus 1.29 making many changes. However, it was not tolerated by Ankama, including an anti-lag violation of UGC (The use of a mod is basic and will remain illegal, however). And Dofus Kamas... it will change soon! The Dofus Retro team will operate with DUSK to offer you a version of Dofus 1.30, using Dofus Remastered fixes! The module stays for the second. It will be required to wait for the official modifications to profit in the improvements!
Back in beauty due to the monitoring system, Alignments will be strongly current with Dofus Rétro with, in addition of Dofus Kamas Buy, the presence of grades! Even if they are still current on Dofus 2. A lot of the Dofus gamers in the position are accused of PL, the wings are more upsetting than anything else along with the experience bonus has been taken away. Finding opponents can be more complicated, because the Huntings (at their rewards) have been eliminated from Dofus.
Bonta or Brakmar is the iconic pick for all PvP enthusiasts. But did you know that a third orientation existed? The Mercenaries were responsible for accomplishing missions, from aggression into Dungeons' passage. Recognizable by their wings, they had a real role of IG animation and above all were formalized by Ankama, providing them a aura. Check out the official forum or contact a Dofus match Expert or RP Clan member.
Tot sets foot at the dish and shows us lots of info on current jobs. Dofus, Wakfu, Waven as well as Krosmaga, ask for the program! With the launch of Dofus Rétro and the 2.53 upgrade of Dofus classic version, everything seems to roll for Ankama who manages to fill servers ( Issering is the latest ). But we have to see and about the rest, we are told by Tot on his website! The upgrade thread is running.
The numbers"are not great" and Dofus does not win new Dofus players ( but staying in precisely the exact same stage ). There is not any devolution. The staff will remain in place and wakfu MMO will continue to get updates, insisted Tot.
Dofus was not the most profitable, but it finally comes from its hibernation! 40 cards will probably be added, with 3 cards each a brand new monster household and class. An"Encore" well seen and notably eagerly awaited from the neighborhood.

Runescape3 is trash. OSRS is far superior. It's the runescape that I recall it IS runescape. Runescape3 is so dead, 90 percent of this map is lifeless, minigames dead, Menaphos dead, pvp dead everything is dead vacant, it actually feels like a poor single player game, I have gone without seeing a single other player when I used to play with that mess. Even most PVM regions of Runescape3 are dead and its only getting worse. Its slowly but surely losing the few faithful players it still has left, RuneScape gold under CB 100 players at Runescape3 are a fantasy since it gets literally no new players. Its a steaming heap of crap wracking and glittered over, and even then it looks terrible just look how ugly they made bandos, fighter chest etc etc..
Runescape is incredible guy that is much valued, Will, thank you! Recounting these occasions I experienced in sport, together with many others commenting here, has brought me a great deal of pleasure. Many friends made through Runescape, rivals as well joining in on this gaming stone. I play with Rs for this day. I really don't get into all that nonsense bickering over what version is better, both are fun and unique and both have nice and dedicated communities. Rs never perish!? Runescape is completely incredible. Games can seem so pointless to people outside of the community but Runescape has had a lot of passion and love within and without Jagex during its life. Downs and ups have come. I logged in to Runescape3 another day and it makes me unhappy to realize how little the playerbase is currently getting. I really like OSRS and play with it a whole lot, but Runescape3 is such a game it is just not gripping for a whole lot of older players.
I regret that I wasn't on the internet for its massacre re-enactment that is fally, '' I did not begin playing until a couple of months following the first event took place in 2006. Nonetheless Runescape supplied me a nostalgia trip because I recall kingduffy along with the GE. I remember being during everybody and super bowl 42 turned out when Plaxico caught the game winning pass for the Giants. When everyone flipped shit miss the old days because that instant as a child was magic.
Runescape was by far the best game that ever came into my life, I was dumb around 14 years old(5 years ago) and botted and obtained perm banned, 07rs buy gold now I only have a chromebook, not a cellphone to play with it (yes I know there's a way to play on a chromebook but I keep failing as im not really good at engineering and have no method to recheck the tutorial after I begin the procedure ). None the less from talking to a buddy all night around the home phone once I was a child too keeping my mind occupied and worry free during 32 days in the hospital from my appendix rupturing I can say Runescape can of very well helped saved my life. Thank you Jagex!!
Unity And Oculus Team Up on VR Course–John Carmack Leaves Oculus
Two completely unrelated stories (beyond the Oculus commonality) in one today. First, Unity and Oculus have teamed up to launch an 11 part, 20+ hour course on all aspects of creating a VR game using the Unity game engine with the Oculus Rift SDK and hardware.
We’ve partnered with Oculus, to launch an extensive intermediate level course guiding you through all aspects of building a virtual reality (VR) game. As the VR industry continues to grow and mature, developers are asking more questions about making the switch to VR, and developers who already work in VR want to improve their skills. That’s why we teamed up with the experts at Oculus to build this comprehensive VR course, “Design, Develop, and Deploy for VR”.
In more than 20 hours of hands-on course content, you’ll learn about programming, user experience (UX) considerations for VR, optimization, launching your game and more. Twelve experts from Oculus and Unity give you in-depth lessons to help you build your own vertical slice (think, level of a game) of an escape room game. Plus, after you complete the course, you can submit your vertical slice for feedback from Oculus.
Even though this course is centered around creating a game, the principles and learnings apply to almost any type of VR content, whether you’re building practical business applications or immersive experiences as art or entertainment. You’ll find this course useful even if your interests go beyond making a game.
In additional Oculus news, John Carmack (of id fame) has announced he is stepping down as CIO of Oculus. His announcement came via Facebook post, excerpt below:
Starting this week, I’m moving to a “Consulting CTO” position with Oculus.
I will still have a voice in the development work, but it will only be consuming a modest slice of my time.
As for what I am going to be doing with the rest of my time: When I think back over everything I have done across games, aerospace, and VR, I have always felt that I had at least a vague “line of sight” to the solutions, even if they were unconventional or unproven. I have sometimes wondered how I would fare with a problem where the solution really isn’t in sight. I decided that I should give it a try before I get too old.
I’m going to work on artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Thankfully John is leaving Facebook before working on artificial intelligence! You can learn more about both announcements in the video below.

Gallery: Finally, Metal Slug Has The Official Book It Deserves
Metal Slug is arguably one of the few series from the ’90s which has managed to endure and persist despite the passage of time and the advances of technology; it seems that blowing up 2D sprites has a timeless quality to it, and we’ve personally been really enjoying revisiting these classic games on Switch.
If you’re a fan of the series then you might already be aware of Bitmap Books’ new Metal Slug: The Ultimate History, an officially-licenced tome which includes concept art, screenshots, interviews, features and much more besides.
Produced with the full cooperation of SNK, the book is 452 pages long and features input from Kazuma Kujo, Takushi Hiyamuta, Andoh Kenji and Takeshi Okui, three of the key developers who shaped this seminal series.
Every game in the Metal Slug bloodline makes the cut, right up to Metal Slug Advance and Metal Slug 7, the two Nintendo-exclusive entries (although the latter did get released on the PSP in a slightly updated form). The book also covers titles which are considered to be forerunners to the franchise, such as In The Hunt (which is coming to Switch soon) and GunForce.
If you like what you see, then you can order a copy direct from the publisher for £29.99.
