This Week At Bungie – 7/26/2018
This week at Bungie, we’re preparing for a celebration.
The Tower is getting ready for the kickoff of Solstice of Heroes, starting next Tuesday, July 31. To keep the party lively, you’ll find bounties to help you track your Triumphs and new challenges for upgrading a new armor set. All the details are laid out in the Solstice of Heroes article. The event will run from July 31 until the weekly reset on August 28.
Today, we showed off what some of the new weapons and armor can do in Forsaken. We love it when the game does the talking. Here is a glimpse of some of the tools of the trade that arrive with Forsaken on September 4.
Full Stream Ahead
Ever since we started talking about the second year of Destiny 2, we’ve dropped a lot of hints about how the state of combat between Guardians will be changing. We know you have questions about how you’ll be using your weapons next season. How will you equip them? How will you customize them? How will you earn the ammunition you’ll need to use them?
Some of these things defy explanation, so we’ll demonstrate the performance of the new arsenal in real time. You are invited to watch us engage in combat—for science!
Year Two Combat Reveal Stream
Tuesday, August 7, 10 AM PDT
Joining us again in one of the hot seats will be full-time Senior Sandbox Designer ( and part-time rockstar) Jon Weisnewski. He makes some promises that we’ll keep when we go live on stream.
Newsk: Hello friends! If you’re a sharp-eyed PvP enthusiast, you may have noticed from some Forsaken coverage that the weapons are doing a bit more damage than they do in the current version of Destiny 2. If you’re a seasoned Destiny 2 player, you may then extrapolate the possibility of a global lethality pass on weapons and abilities that may or may not be in the pipe to go live when Forsaken is released. I’m here to quickly confirm that, along with weapon slots and ammo availability, we have globally adjusted the “time to kill” in the Crucible. If you’d like more details, join us on stream and we’ll get into it! See you then!
And that’s just one question we’ll answer beyond the shadow of a doubt. Tune in for a full demonstration of perks, mods, loadouts, and everything else you’ll need to know to best your fellow players in battle. We can’t give you skill, but we can equip you with a pre-mission briefing.
Save the date, follow our channels, and prepare your favorite chat room snacks.
Back to the Lab Again
Crucible Labs has been on hiatus for a while. It’s time to start experimenting again. Senior Designer Andrew Weldon has the details about the new mode coming next and when you can expect to see it go live.
Andrew: Hello again!
Back in May, we launched the first Crucible Labs playlist with the game mode “Showdown.” As discussed in the following week’s TWAB, this was a good opportunity for us to test the playlist on a relatively safe baseline that we had mostly already shipped for Crimson Days and the standalone Doubles playlist. The first test served its purpose—we stood the system up and got great feedback on an in-development mode. We’ve also made one noteworthy change to Labs as a whole—with the 1.2.3 update, Labs matches will now also count toward your Valor ranking and will offer standard Crucible rewards at match complete!
Now that we’ve released that 1.2.3 update, we’re ready to deploy our next Crucible Labs experiment to you—“Lockdown.” Lockdown is a new 4v4 round-based Competitive mode that, like Control, is about capturing and holding zones. Unlike Control, your only score comes from playing the objective. Those of you from the Taken King/Rise of Iron era know this mode’s predecessor, the Control variant “Zone Control.” Here’s how it plays out:
Both teams start Lockdown with a “Progress” percentage of 0% displayed under the scoreboard. Once a team holds two zones, progress will begin ticking up for that team at a rate of 1% per second. There is no round timer—the first team to reach 100% will win the round, and the first to win three rounds will win the match.
That’s not all, though—if a team can successfully capture all three zones, they will instantly win the round, regardless of each team’s progress state. A well-coordinated push from your opponents will always be dangerous, which means you need to stay focused on your objective.
However, winning a round that way is not necessarily as simple as it might seem. To earn capture progress or win on the triple cap, you must hold uncontested zones. If a team holds two zones, you can fully halt their progress by contesting one or more zones (you’ll see “PROGRESS HALTED” display under the scoreboard to let you know this is happening). They won’t start earning score again until they clear you and your progress off the point(s). The same applies when going for the triple cap lockdown—the instant win only applies if all three zones are completely clear.
We’ve seen some really exciting matches play out from this ruleset internally, and we hope you have similar experiences out in the wild!
As with any Labs playlist, this mode is not final, and you may come across some tuning issues or bugs. Your most direct avenue for feedback on this mode will be in a new Labs thread on the Feedback forum, and we’ll be monitoring the conversation we see around the mode to pluck out actionable items for future iteration and polish.
We hope you enjoy this first look at the new mode—and you can play it right now.
Shhhh
Many Guardians have heard whispers on Io and rushed to investigate. Some of you encountered a long streak of Cabal drills—far too many Cabal drills. We did some investigating to see if this was a bug. Turns out there’s no bug, but the current random generator doesn’t do a good job of preventing streaks of either event.
We’re currently investigating ways to prevent these bad luck runs in the future. We did some simulations to see if there might be any more long streaks of one type of event in the forecast. We expect a few more outliers, but balanced with long streaks of only Taken Blight events. This activity will be available every week, and once you do unlock the Heroic version, it will stay unlocked. We will continue to monitor the situation. Happy hunting.
From Now Until Forsaken
Earlier this week, we published a new Development Roadmap. Previous editions of this forecast were more focused on our plans for the future. With our immediate future looking brighter—even with a darker story to tell—we’re using the Roadmap to telegraph the updates you’ll need to download before your second year of Destiny 2 can begin.
We’ve been pretty true to the plans we laid out in the last roadmap, but there were some new entries. As we do, today we’d like to provide some commentary on Director Updates and Milestones and Challenges Updates.
Two of the main functions of the Director have been to help players know what to do next and lead them to sources of more powerful gear. We have some new ideas for how we can better support these goals, so we’re changing the way those things work.
There will be three ways to acquire Powerful Engrams in Forsaken:
- A whole new challenge system that will replace the way you have been tracking milestones.
- Specific quests and bounties will provide better gear, indicated by their summaries.
- New mysteries are rarer sources—but if we told you about them, they wouldn’t be mysterious.
Most of these sources of power will be refreshed weekly or daily. Some will be one-time sources.
Once these changes are deployed into the wild, the “Milestones Blade” will call attention to these activities:
- Critical, required missions such as the main campaign or new subclass path pursuits
- Next steps for quests or other aspects of the progression of your characters
- Legacy milestones from Destiny 2 campaigns that aren’t becoming “challenges” or quests
Additionally, the layout of the Director will be updated to accommodate two new destinations: The Tangled Shore and the Dreaming City. You’ll obviously need to purchase Forsaken to visit them, but they’ll appear on the interface that we all see.
Today, we wanted to set some expectations for what’s changing, and why it was on the roadmap. You’ll understand the full experience for how these new (and improved?) features lead you on your journey to your maximum potential as a Guardian when you play. That’s always the best source of understanding. Plus, discovering the path is part of the fun.
Save the Dates
There are plenty more than just downloads that have to happen before Forsaken launches. With Gambit as our special cargo, we’re heading to gamescom, where we will make some important announcements. We’re going to PAX West, where we’ll mix it up with the community (and, yes, play some Gambit) one more time before launch. As always, there will be fun things happening in the game to keep you challenged and entertained as you count down the days until September 4.
Check out our August calendar of events in the game and in real life.
The Sacred Texts!
A popular request among Guardians is to see the Grimoire committed to print. Today, we are proud to announce an upcoming Destiny Grimoire Anthology.
Until now, the myths, mysteries, and machinations of the Destiny universe were found hidden throughout the worlds—enticing threads that hinted at a greater tapestry. The Destiny Grimoire Anthology weaves tales from multiple sources together for the first time, casting new light on Destiny’s most legendary heroes, infamous villains, and their greatest moments of triumph and tragedy.
Each unique volume intends to illuminate a facet of the world, and the complete anthology will confirm and challenge players’ thoughts and assumptions about what it means to be a Guardian, offering new and differing perspectives on the cosmic war that rages between the Traveler and its ancient enemies.
The first volume is titled Dark Mirror and available for preorder on the Bungie store. Look for it this fall wherever books are sold. It will also be published in additional languages and available in additional regions to be announced.
Service Guarantees Citizenship
There are many ways we collaborate with our players to make a better game. We pore over feedback loops from multiple sources on the internet. We contract notable experts among you to join us as testers for a limited run. Sometimes, we’ll even host a summit in our studio to dig into our future plans. Those measures, while effective, unfortunately don’t stand a chance of including everyone.
Bungie User Research casts a wider net. Willing test subjects complete online surveys. There are even occasional invitations to visit our studio and step into the lab to sample something in development. The registration questionnaire has been updated with new data points that we’d love to know about you. If you’re already in our database, hit it again. If you didn’t know about this opportunity to do your part, this is your chance to sign up for a future testing opportunity.

For the Monarchy
New Monarchy claimed the third and final Faction Rallies victory of Season 3. They were dominant in previous seasons but were winless coming into this one. The faction managed to squeak out a victory despite Dead Orbit having more players pledged. It’s about action, not promises.
Helping Hands
This is the Player Support Report.
Tuesday Morning Glory
This week, Destiny Player Support became aware of an issue impacting the Glory bonuses earned by players who were completing three or more Competitive Crucible matches a week.
With the launch of Crucible Ranks in Season 3, it was intended that players who were Fabled rank or below would receive a bonus allocation of Glory points following the weekly reset of any week during which they completed three or more Competitive matches. After investigating player reports regarding this feature, we have determined these Glory rank packages are not being granted as intended.
While we’re working with our Crucible team to investigate this issue, players should expect that this issue will persist for the remainder of Season 3. Players who are aiming to unlock Glory rank–based rewards for Season 3 should plan their Crucible play accordingly.
Destiny 2 Hotfix 1.2.3.1
Next week we’re deploying Destiny 2 Hotfix 1.2.3.1 to players. This hotfix is the final barrier between players and the launch of Solstice of Heroes, and all players will need to install this hotfix before they can join the celebration. Provided below is a brief timeline of this deployment.
On Tuesday, July 31, 2018:
- 9 AM PDT: Destiny 2 Hotfix 1.2.3.1 will become available to all players.
- 9–10 AM PDT: Players will be prompted to accept Hotfix 1.2.3.1 as they return to orbit after completing activities.
- 10 AM PDT: All players who have not yet accepted Hotfix 1.2.3.1 will be removed from activities and returned to the title screen to take this hotfix.
Solstice of Heroes
Next Tuesday, July 31, 2018, Solstice of Heroes will kick off in Destiny 2. Before this event goes live, here are a few points of vital information:
- Before attempting to complete a Triumph, players should make sure they have acquired it from the Statue of Heroes. Some Triumphs may need to be completed again if the Triumph is not in the player’s inventory at the time of completion.
- For Moments of Triumph, adventures and Region Chests are tracked by the character that has completed the most of them, and they are not tracked account-wide. Players who encounter issues making progress toward these Triumphs should make sure they are playing on the character that has made the most progress toward these Triumphs.
- Progress toward Triumphs and event rewards may be lost if players delete any characters on their account. For the best experience, it is recommended that players do not delete any characters until all desired rewards have been redeemed and Solstice of Heroes concludes on August 28, 2018.
Cayde’s Exotic Stash
Since the reveal of Destiny 2: Forsaken, players have asked whether or not Cayde’s Exotic Stash will be included with pre-orders directly from platform online marketplaces. We can confirm that this pre-order bonus will be available to all players who purchase through the PlayStation, Xbox, and Battle.net online stores before launch.
Additionally, shown below is what players can expect to become available to them in Year 2, based off of title ownership:
For information on purchase eligibility from other retailers, players should visit the official destinythegame.com page.
Smoke and Mirrors
Welcome to the most exciting section of the TWAB! This is where we get to honor you, the players, for creating kick-ass videos. Every week, we pick our favorites and send the creators a special emblem. If you think you can create something to catch our eye, post it to the Creations page. Now, let’s bring out this week’s champions.
Movie of the Week: We Were Here II
Honorable Mention: Bad Day
Before we go, here is a quick peek at last week’s top scorers in the Nightfall.
Game Informer is wrapping up its month of Forsaken coverage. You can read and watch all of it on this handy hub page the magazine set up. Tomorrow, Game Informer will be finishing up with a podcast featuring Game Director Steve Cotton and Project Lead Scott Taylor. We know you still have questions. We are a little more than a month out, and will start diving into more details as we draw closer. The stream on August 7 will shine a light on many topics you’re curious about regarding the future of combat in Destiny 2.
As mentioned above, Crucible Labs is live right now! I ’m going to play some Lockdown.

Hot Technologies on Track at Open Source Summit

Open Source Summit North America is right around the corner. There will be hundreds of sessions, workshops, and talks, all curated by experts in the Linux and open source communities. It’s not an easy feat to choose the topics and sessions you want to attend at the event because there are so many topics and only so much time.
In this article, we talk with Laura Abbott, a developer employed by Red Hat, and Bryan Liles, a developer at Heptio, a Kubernetes company, based in Seattle, Washington, about the upcoming event. Abbott is on the program committee for Open Source Summit, and Liles is one of the program chairs, working hard “to build out a schedule that touches on many aspects of Open Source.”
Hot topics
“I’ve been interested in cloud-native applications for a few years now, and I spend most of my time thinking about the problems and developing software in this space,” said Liles. “I’m also interested in computer vision, augmented reality, and virtual reality. One of the most important topics in this space right now is Machine Learning. It’s amazing to see all the open source solutions being created. I feel that even as a hobbyist, I can find tools to help me build and run models without causing me to go into debt. Personally, I’m looking forward to the talks in the Infrastructure & Automation and the Kubernetes/Containers/Cloud Native Apps tracks.”
Here are just a few of the must-see cloud computing sessions:
As a kernel developer, Abbott gets excited when people talk about their future kernel work, especially when it involves the internals like the page cache or memory management. “I also love to see topics that talk about getting people involved in projects for the first time,” she said. “I’m also excited to see the Diversity Empowerment Summit and learning from the speakers there.”
You may wonder as we are moving toward the cloud native world, where everything is running in a cloud, does Linux even matter anymore? But, the fact is Linux is powering the cloud. “Linux is what’s powering all those topics. When people say Linux. they’re usually referring to the complete platform from kernel to userspace libraries. You need a solid base to be able to run your application in the cloud. The entire community of Linux contributors enables today’s developers to work with the latest technologies,” said Abbott.
A few of the featured talks in the Linux Systems and Development track include:
- Spectre, Meltdown, & Linux – Greg Kroah-Hartman, The Linux Foundation
- Kernel Mailing List Collaboration – Dawn M. Foster, The Scale Factory
- Advances in CPU Idle Time Management – Rafael Wysocki, Intel
- All About Linux Kernel Selftest – Shuah Khan, Samsung OSG
- Keynote: Linus Torvalds, Creator of Linux & Git, in conversation with Dirk Hohndel, VP & Chief Open Source Officer, VMware
Latest Trends
“DevOps is unsurprisingly a hot topic,” said Abbott. “There is a lot of focus on how to move towards newer best practices with projects like Kubernetes and how to best monitor your infrastructure. Blockchain technologies are a very hot topic. Some of this work is very forward looking but there’s a lot of interest in figuring out if blockchain can solve existing problems,” said Abbott.
That means OSSNA is the place to be if you are interested in emerging trends and technologies. “If you are looking to see what is coming next, or currently involved in Open Source, you should attend,” says Liles. “The venue is in a great location in Vancouver, so you can also take in the city between listening to your peers during talks or debating current trends during the hallway track,” said Liles.
Abbott concluded, “Anyone who is excited about Linux should attend. There’s people talking about such a wide variety of topics from kernel development to people management. There’s something for everyone.”

Find out how easy it is to make videos in Microsoft Photos

When Alex Thomopoulos says “Get down, rise up,” she’s asking you what you’re passionate about and what makes you get up every day to pursue it. It’s a motto she reinforces as a Burton Girls Ambassador. The program encourages strength, independence and creativity for young women.
Food is one thing that makes Thomopoulos get down and rise up.
As a chef and entrepreneur, Thomopoulos can tell you how to make a gluten-free Meyer lemon cake, but she admits making videos that will take her business to the next level is not her forte.
“I know how to cook, but I don’t understand technology at all,” she says.
Fortunately, she gets help from Ashlie Little, a Microsoft product specialist, who shows Thomopoulos how to use the Microsoft Photos app in Windows 10 to edit existing video clips and still images into a movie that’s ready to share on social media.
Check out the tutorial, which goes over importing photos and videos; as well as adjusting lighting and cropping; syncing music; and adding text (recipe instructions and ingredients), filters and 3D effects.

Here are all of the future TV shows that Apple has signed deals for
Moving past “Planet of the Apps” and “Carpool Karaoke,” Apple is believed to be spending $1 billion or more on its first high-budget TV shows, which could hit screens as soon as March 2019. Here are the ones we know about so far, and a rolling series of updates including the possibility of a “Time Bandits” series.
Time Bandits – July 2018
Apple is said by Deadline to be wrapping up a deal to turn Terry Gilliam’s 1980 fantasy movie into a show, co-produced by Anonymous Content, Paramount Television, and Media Rights Capital. Gilliam himself is expected to serve as a “non-writing” executive producer.
The movie revolves around a boy who runs into the film’s namesake bandits, who are using a map to travel through holes in spacetime to their next heist. While being pursued by the Supreme Being, they run across historical and mythical characters.
See – July 2018
New to the cast of the sci-fi series is Alfre Woodard, who will play Paris, Variety reports. The character is described only as an advisor and priestess.
Woodard is probably best known as Mariah from the Netflix show “Luke Cage,” but won an Emmy for the HBO movie “Miss Evers’ Boys,” and an Oscar nomination for “Cross Creek.” Marvel fans may also recognize her as Miriam Sharpe from “Captain America: Civil War.”
The actress is just the second cast member announced for the show, the first being “Aquaman” and “Game of Thrones” star Jason Momoa, who is playing warrior Baba Voss.
Untitled morning show drama – July 2018
Apple’s still-untitled morning show drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston will be directed by Mimi Leder, according to Variety. Leder is known for recent shows like “Shameless” and “The Leftovers,” as well as movies like “Deep Impact” and “Pay It Forward.” Leder is also set to work alongside Kerry Ehrin as an executive producer.
Variety adds that the show will be “an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women and men who carry out this daily televised ritual.”
See – July 2018
Jason Momoa, best known for his work on “Justice League” and “Game of Thrones,” has reportedly landed the lead role in Apple’s upcoming original series “See.” The actor will play the role of Baba Voss, a “fearless warrior, leader and guardian” in Apple’s sci-fi saga.
Not much is known about “See,” but previous reports have described the forthcoming original series as an “epic, world-building drama” set in the future. The series is expected to run eight episodes.
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) penned the script and will serve as executive producer, while Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2”) will direct. “See” was spawned by Chernin Entertainment and Endeavor Content, and purchased by Apple.
Calls – June 2018
Originally a short-form series on France’s Canal+, Apple is working on an English-language co-production, as well as acquiring the rights to the first season of the French-language show.
In its French incarnation, the series tells short stories using a mix of real-world audio and low-key images, Variety explained.
Sesame Workshop – June 2018
One of the earliest Muppets, from an IBM training film.
Looking to fill in its children’s programming niche, Apple is reportedly partnering with Sesame Workshop to create an assortment of shows. The content won’t include “Sesame Street,” which belongs to HBO and PBS, according to Variety. Sesame Workshop is expected to produce a mix of live-action, animated, and puppet series.
You Think It, I’ll Say It – June 2018
Based on Curtis Sittenfield’s upcoming collection of short stories, the 10-episode series was originally expected to star well-known comedienne Kristen Wiig. Wiig has had to leave that role however to due to a scheduling conflict with “Wonder Woman 1984,” Variety said. In the latter she’s playing the movie’s villain, Cheetah.
Sources claimed that Apple is still moving ahead with its show, which has Colleen McGuinness as creator and showrunner, and Sittenfield as a consulting producer. Wiig is still slated to executive produce, with help from Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Neustadter works under Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine media brand.
‘Little America’ series – June 2018

Apple has reportedly ordered “Little America,” an immigrant anthology series that will feature tales inspired by true stories published in Epic Magazine. Academy Award-nominated screenwriters Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, who worked together on “The Big Sick,” will executive produce alongside Alan Yang (“Master of None”), while Lee Eisenberg (“The Office”) will write, executive produce and serve as showrunner, reports The Wrap.
Oprah Winfrey – June 2018
Apple and Winfrey have forged a long-term partnership to “create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world.” Nothing else is known so far.
Untitled Hilde Lysiak drama – June 2018
Apple has reportedly ordered 10 episodes of a drama based on Hilde Lysiak, a preteen girl who exposed a murder in the town of Selinsgrove, Pa. through her own newspaper, the Orange Street News. In the fictional version, a girl moves from Brooklyn to a small town where she exposes a cold case residents — and her own father — have tried to suppress.
Variety says that the show is being executive produced by Dana Fox and Dara Resnik, with help from Joy Gorman Wettels and Sharlene Martin. Jon M. Chu will both direct and executive produce. The show is under the wing of Anonymous Content and Paramount Television, which are also working on Apple’s “Shantaram.”
Little Voices – May 2018
Executive produced by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” director J.J. Abrams and musician Sara Bareilles, Variety reports that the show is a “love letter to the diverse musicality of New York which explores the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.” Apple has ordered 10 initial episodes.
The show is attached to Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television, as well as Jessie Nelson, who will not only write and executive produce but serve as showrunner and direct the first episode. Nelson worked with Bareilles on the musical “Waitress,” and has film credits such as “I Am Sam” and “Corrina, Corrina.”
Shantaram – May 2018
The show is based on a Gregory David Roberts novel, which follows an escapee from an Australian prison who ends up in the Bombay underworld.
The series will be produced by Anonymous Content and Paramount Television, according to Variety. Perhaps the biggest names attached to the project so far are Eric Warren Singer and David Manson —the latter has executive produced shows like “House of Cards” and “Big Love,” while Singer will handle both writing and executive production duties, with screenwriting credits like “American Hustle.”
Dickinson – May 2018
Starring Hailee Steinfeld, the 30-minute comedy series will look at the restrained 19th-century world of Emily Dickinson through the poet’s unique filter. Steinfeld has never before had a regular TV role, being best known for movies like “True Grit” and “Pitch Perfect,” as well as her musical career.
Alena Smith will serve as writer and executive producer, while David Gordon Green is set to direct and executive produce. Alex Goldstone from Anonymous Content will also executive produce, alongside Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta via Sugar23 Productions and Darlene Hunt. The show is being produced by wiip, Anonymous Content, and Sugar23.
Are You Sleeping – May 2018
Spencer in ‘Hidden Figures.’
Apple has picked up 10 episodes in adapting the titular Kathleen Barber novel, with “Hidden Figures” star Octavia Spencer cast in the lead role. The show will be a “true crime” drama, revolving around podcasts about unsolved or wrongful convictions. Sarah Koenig, the creator of “Serial,” is thought to be serving a consulting role. Reese Witherspoon, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kristen Campo will be executive producers.
In June we learned that additional cast members will include Lizzy Caplan, Ron Cephas Jones, Elizabeth Perkins, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Beach, Tracie Thoms, and Haneefah Wood, but most notably Aaron Paul, playing fictional convicted murderer Warren Cave, whose innocence has been questioned for some 20 years.
Spencer will play reporter Poppy Parnell, looking into the case for her podcast, while Caplan will play twin sisters, Josie and Lanie. Jones will be Poppy’s father, Leander “Shreve” Scoville, while Perkins will play Cave’s mother Melanie. Phifer is cast as former detective Markus Knox, and Beach will be Poppy’s husband Ingram Rhoades.
Finally Thoms will play Poppy’s older sister Desiree, and Wood will be another sister, Cydie.
Foundation – Apr. 2018
Apple isn’t the first to take a crack at Isaac Asimov’s sprawling science fiction books — Fox, Sony, and Warner Bros. have all tried and failed to get feature films off the ground, and HBO aborted an attempt at its own TV series. This latest effort is being handled by Skydance Television, with industry veterans David Goyer and Josh Friedman serving as executive producers and showrunners.
The problem so far has been the scope of Asimov’s story. At the center is a “psycho-historian” who foresees the collapse of the Galactic Empire, and sets about preventing the death of human knowledge.
Central Park – March 2018
Coming from 20th Century Fox Television and Loren Bouchard, the creator of “Bob’s Burgers,” “Central Park” will be Apple’s first animated series, a musical tale about a family of caretakers that end up saving its namesake. The show was written by Bouchard, Josh Gad, and Nora Smith, and will star people like Leslie Odom, Jr., Stanely Tucci, and Kristen Bell.
Little America – Feb. 2018
This show is being written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, previously responsible for “The Big Sick,” and revolves around immigrant stories plucked from real-life accounts in Epic Magazine. Each episode will run just 30 minutes in an anthology format.
Epic editors Joshuah Bearman and Joshua Davis will serve as executive producers. The show will be developed by studio Uni TV.
Untitled M. Night Shyamalan thriller – Feb. 2018
Little is known about the show beyond it having ten 30-minute episodes, the first being directed by Shyamalan, the rest only being produced by him. His output is infamously mixed, including hits like “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” but also bombs like “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The show will be Shyamalan’s second TV production, after executive producing Fox’s “Wayward Pines.”
Leading writing will be Tony Basgallop, who has worked on projects like “24: Legacy,” “Inside Men,” and “EastEnders.” Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black, and Steve Tisch of production company Escape Artists are also executive producers, and Taylor Latham will be co-executive producing.
Swagger – Feb. 2018
The drama will serve as a biography of NBA player Kevin Durant, but also dive into the Amateur Athletic Union and the players, families, and coaches involved with the program.
Durant himself will be involved as a producer, working in conjunction with Imagine Television, run by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. Reggie Rock Bythewood will write and direct.
Carpool Karaoke – Feb. 2018
Apple has opted to renew “Carpool Karaoke” for a second season according to CBS, which hosts “The Late Late Show with James Corden” — from which “Carpool Karaoke” was spun off.
Most planned guests are unknown. Last season featured people like Will Smith, Metallica, and “Game of Thrones” stars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. An episode with Linkin Park and Ken Jeong was one of the last things recorded by Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington before his suicide.
A new episode is set to debut June 15, promoting the movie “Tag” by featuring stars Ed Helms, Jeremy Renner, and Jon Hamm. Whereas the first season was limited to Apple Music subscribers, this new episode will be available through the company’s TV app.

Untitled Damien Chazelle project – Jan 2018
Chazelle is working with fellow “La La Land” peers Jordan Horowitz and Fred Berger, who will serve as producers, on a show with no other known details.
Untitled sketch comedy show – Jan. 2018
This one will star comedienne Kristen Wiig, and be based on a shorty story collection by Curtis Sittenfelds called “You Think It, I’ll Say It.” The effort is one of three Apple shows linked to Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine studio, the others being the morning show drama and “Are You Sleeping.”
See – Jan. 2018
Described as an “epic, world-building drama” set in the future, “See” is written by Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders”) and directed by Francis Lawrence (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2”).
“Game of Thrones” alum Jason Momoa is set to star in the sci-fi drama that is expected to run eight episodes.
Home – Jan. 2018
A docuseries rather than fiction, “Home” will focus on unusual homes and the people behind them. Currently 10 episodes are queued up.
The show is being produced by Altimeter Films, Time Inc. Productions, and Media Weaver Entertainment, with director Matt Tyrnauer at the helm. Tyrnauer is perhaps best known for a 2008 film about fashion designer Valentino Garavani.
Untitled Ronald D. Moore space drama – Dec. 2017
Another mystery project, it is at least known to be set in an alternate timeline in which the 1960s’ space race never ended. Moore is a high-profile figure in the science fiction world, with credits such as the “Battlestar Galactica” reboot and “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
It will boast “Fargo” producers Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, and come from Sony Pictures Television and Tall Ship Productions.
Untitled morning show drama – Nov. 2017
Based on the Brian Stelter novel “Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV,” Apple has already ordered two seasons. This may be because of its big talent get: Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who will both star and executive produce. The series is being written and executive produced by “House of Cards” supervising producer and political consultant Jay Carson.
Amazing Stories – Oct. 2017
The original Amazing Stories.
Based on a two-season Steven Spielberg anthology series from the 1980s, Apple has reportedly ordered 10 episodes with a budget of over $5 million each. The new show may be similar in tone to “The Twilight Zone” or “Black Mirror,” with Spielberg back on as an executive producer.
It hasn’t had the smoothest run so far. Original showrunner Bryan Fuller left in February, to be replaced by “Once Upon a Time” creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. Fuller allegedly wanted the show to be closer in tone to “Black Mirror,” but Apple objected, presumably because of its demands for a sanitized programming lineup.
Beyond TV
Cartoon Saloon’s latest movie, “The Breadwinner.”
Apple’s first distributed feature film could from Cartoon Saloon, known for animated movies like “The Secret of Kells” and more recently “The Breadwinner.” While Apple is said to be nearing a distribution deal for the U.S. and some other countries, as of June 2018 the movie has yet to be made and is over a year away.

The Weekender: Heresy Edition
Welcome to the Weekender, your weekly look at the best new games, sales, and updates. We’ve got some great new gaming options, including two completely free and very fun titles. There’s also a smattering of sales including a rare sale on one of the best mobile games ever.
Out Now
Mind Cards (iPhone)
Mind Cards is a new solo card game in the same vein as TinyTouchtales classic hit Card Crawl. In it you must work your way through a 21-card deck in order to win. Some cards are monsters you must fight, and they deal damage which reduces your life. Some are potions that heal lost life. Some cards are food and replenish another of the game’s finite resources. You use food with every card you play. Some cards are gems which allow you to deal out cards to all open spaces. You can do this without gems, but it will cost life instead. Finally, there are special attack cards that hit monsters without taking damage. The goal of the game is to use every card without losing all of your life and it’s a fair bit harder than it sounds. As you play you earn gold and can unlock more special cards for use in future games. Mind Cards is completely free with no ads or IAPs, so if solo card games are at all your thing, there’s no reason not to check it out!

There’s a new CCG on the block, The Horus Heresy: Legions is Warhammer 40K’s entrance into the crowded market. Can they take a bite out of Hearthstone and others? It’s hard to know for sure and certainly time will tell, but the easy answer is probably not. The Horus Heresy: Legions features pretty-standard gameplay for the genre. You pick a legion which dictates card choices. You take on opponents and try to reduce their life to nil for the win. The only innovation I see is a guild system, which has the potential to be cool. I’ve always wondered why CCGs didn’t implement guilds as a way to keep players invested. Having a play group to test and play with is huge. It’s free with the usual IAPs, so easy enough to check out if you dig the IP or want a new CCG to play around with.

Amethlion is an explore/craft/survive game with an open world full of quests, dungeons, and mysteries. The graphics and music are a bit basic, even for the genre, but there’s a lot to explore, build, and you know, kill. Oh, and you can get pets. There’s a big update with new items, quests, and areas of the world to explore coming next Tuesday on iOS. The update is already live on Android. It’s not perfect but the developer seems receptive to feedback and the game is just a couple bucks.

Nishan Shaman is a rhythm game where you control Nishan’s spirit travels into the void on a quest. She protects herself from the dangerous in that place through a spiritual shield maintained through drumming, which you control. As creatures hit her shield you drum them into nothingness, protecting her as she continues her journey. It’s simple yet quite engaging. I was immediately nodding along with the music and smiling broadly as I drummed the monsters away. Nishan Shaman has a cool mythology and cultural elements, a great story, and beautiful graphics and music. Oh, and it is completely free. You should download it right now.

Ok, so I may have been a little harsh a couple weeks ago when Battleheart 2 came out for iOS. I wasn’t, and still am not, a big fan of how little the game progressed in the seven years between the original and sequel. I may have discounted how good of a game it still is, for what it is. It’s out now on Android and I’ve played about 10 hours in the intervening two weeks. A good chunk of that was the co-operative multiplayer, which while unintuitive to set up, does work pretty well and is a fun addition to the game. You and a friend just pick the same room name and it connects you. Battleheart 2 is quite the grind fest, there’s no story to speak of, and it’s certainly not getting any awards for innovation, but, if you enjoy real-time action and slowly improving a party of adventurers you could do a lot worse.
Sales
One of the world’s better roguelike games, Dungelot: Shattered Lands features fun and challenging gameplay and a lot of persistent benefits to gain as you play to make the next run even better. It’s free on iOS and you should get it if you don’t already own it.
Tinybuild, the makers of the aforementioned, have their popular boxing sim on sale as well for just a buck on iOS.
Now we’re talking people. Crashlands might be my favorite mobile game. It’s certainly my favorite explore/craft/survive game on mobile. If you love that genre as much as I do and haven’t tried it out now’s the time, it’s very rarely on sale, and $4 is a steal for this one.
Have you played the side-scrolling, genre-mashing Kingdom: New Lands? It’s part tower-defense, part city builder, part simulation, part puzzle, and all kinds of challenging. It’s also on sale for $5, half off.
Seen anything else you liked? Played any of the above? Let us know in the comments!

The Kubernetes Third-Year Anniversary Is Just the Beginning

A vibrant development community continues to help make Kubernetes the profoundly successful open source project it has become. In just a few years after Kubernetes was created as an in-house project by Google, Kubernetes’ governance processes have also served to underpin the platform’s adoption as well. And a healthy community is at the heart of any successful source project.
At the same time, the open source community is not a “static asset.” To be permanently successful and to move forward, any open source project also needs a growing pool of contributors in order to survive. That’s why the Kubernetes community is working on multiple programs, focused on onboarding contributors, including the Kubernetes Mentoring initiative, Kubernetes Contributing guide and Office Hours, as well as “Meet our Contributors sessions”, Outreachy and even Google Summer of Code (GSoC), which is one of the most popular and well-known programs for the new contributors to the open source projects in the world. Some of the stand-out contributors have also garnered industry recognition.
Releases, Features and Roadmap
Kubernetes is a technology, first and foremost. And the project obviously couldn’t be so successful if the technology did not offer such a profound benefit to organizations.
The most important releases of Kubernetes occur four times per year, providing a new set of features each time. The patch releases (delivering security patches and bug fixes) take place even more often, keeping the codebase always up-to-date.

Apple design head Jonathan Ive to talk at Wired’s 25 anniversary

By Roger Fingas Thursday, July 26, 2018, 02:10 pm PT (05:10 pm ET)
Apple’s chief design officer, Jonathan Ive, will speak at an October event in San Francisco marking the 25th anniversary of Wired Magazine.
Ive will go on stage Oct. 15, Wired revealed on Thursday. Starting Oct. 12, the event will also host people like Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and not one but two Wojcikis — Anne, the CEO of 23andMe, and Susan, in charge of YouTube.
While the event is another edition of the magazine’s annual Business Conference, the special anniversary will add a retrospective focus as well as musings about the future of technology.
A ticket to Ive’s part of the event currently costs $993, while an all-access pass is $1,125. Prices will go up after Aug. 20.
Ive has a long history with Apple. After doing consulting with the company, he joined full-time in 1992, and is credited with core design work on many key products such as iPhones and iPads. His role as morphed over the years — in 2012, for instance, he began handling some of Apple’s “human interface” design.
In May 2015 he was promoted to “chief design officer,” distancing himself from many day-to-day concerns, which were handed off to Alan Dye and Richard Howarth. Apple reversed course in December 2017 though, giving Ive direct management of the company’s design teams.

Review: Battleheart 2
Despite the fact that the original pick-up-and-play role-playing game Battleheart made its debut seven years ago, it’s hardly lost a lick of its charm. Unfortunately, follow-up Battleheart Legacy was bereft of much of the charm and pull of the first game, leaving players to tinker with Battleheart until Mika Mobile finally released a true sequel in Battleheart 2. Now that it’s available for iOS devices with an Android release to follow soon enough, it’s proven itself another formidable casual twist on classic RPG tropes that’s easy enough for even newcomers to enjoy.
Though the world of Battleheart 2 is rife with classic RPG classes such as mages and knights, it’s curiously bereft of any deep narrative. For that matter, it’s a fairly light application, launching quickly and offering a tutorial or a way for veterans to jump right into battle. The tutorial is the only way ahead of being thrust straight into battle to glean any sort of plot thread information, with a female ally relating that the “fair land” of Battleheart is “once again in turmoil.”

This sequel follows the assassination of the king that ruled over the realm from five years ago, which caused a bit of a shakeup in the kingdom. King Marcus apparently died without an heir, so the Capital has simply remained without a ruler the entire time. There are a dozen various noble houses currently vying to wear his crown, and while they’re all preoccupied with that, monsters and other creatures have invaded the countryside. While the useless Royal Guard sits by and does nothing, it’s up to you and a band of brave heroes to save the day and eliminate the advancing threats.
With that explained, it’s off to the races, so to speak. Battleheart 2‘s minimalistic menu lets you run off into battle, adjust your party, select gear and talents assigned to each character, or go online to enjoy some multiplayer matches. Available missions can be selected in any order from the map screen at your leisure. You can even choose to tackle a formidable boss fight whenever you think you can handle it instead of going in numerical order. Your first order of business, however, should be assembling four adventurers out of the dozen or so unlocked at the game’s start. You can choose from an interesting assortment, each with about a paragraph of unique backstory.

You can select a powerful Knight, a Cleric with the gift of healing, the Berserker with physical attack prowess, and even magicians like the Frost Mage, with various elemental magic that can deal devastating blows to the enemy at long range. Assembling a formidable party is what will ensure continued victories as you play through the game’s scattered missions, as you’ll need a healer or an equivalent, no doubt, and appropriate party members to provide for you in any situation. Foregoing any sort of healer isn’t a great idea, as you’ll soon find that all four party members are knocked out within a shockingly short amount of time. It’s up to you to continually change out targets that need healing, however, because party members often won’t simply swap over to the next fighter in dire need of a health boost.
It’s all part of the very important strategy you’ll need to employ as you take to the battlefield and control all four of your adventurers simultaneously. Using the game’s touch controls, you’ll complete a series of bite-sized battles where you fight off various waves of enemies. To control a character, you’ll simply tap on the one you want to control and drag it to an enemy or ally. You can also simply drag them to an empty spot on the map, and the character will head there in a hurry. Targeting allies with healing magic and buffs is simple, and the nature of the game means your actions will simply be repeated ad infinitum until the battle is over, or until you change something.

It’s a no-frills and intuitive system, though unfortunately sometimes your assignments don’t seem to take. For the most part, however, it’s painless to direct your characters. It can get a little frustrating when several enemies are clumped up onscreen and tangled up with allies, which can call for some strategic movement around the battlefield. Otherwise, since the game’s in 2D, it’s easy to change up the path of a character and get them to a more manoeuvrable space quickly. The situations in which you can’t, however, will often result in a few deaths that could easily have been prevented. Adding some sort of way to select characters beyond tapping on them would help make this less of an issue in the future, perhaps.
Each character also has abilities beyond their simplistic melee and primary attacks or buffs, and you can unlock additional skills as the game progresses. When you find the perfect combination of characters for your party, you’ll want to stick with them because of this system. Unfortunately, this leaves little reason to explore the other characters available at the onset when you find four heroes that work best for you, making for an adventure that will eventually devolve into a bit of banality.

There’s a good amount of automation happening in Battleheart 2, but there’s still plenty for you to orchestrate, meaning it’s not a game that wholly plays itself, like several others on the market. While it’s largely unchanged from the first game, it still delivers enough satisfying combat and great-looking environments to be worth buying into, especially if you’re jonesing for more of the same formula.
With that said, it’s the perfect way to kill some time while on your commute to work, waiting at the doctor’s office, or any time you want to jump into an RPG-flavored world without the lengthy introductions, lore setup, or being forced into character roles you don’t want at the onset. For RPG combat on your terms, Battleheart 2 delivers in spades.
