Feature: Killer Apps We Really Want To See On Nintendo Switch
Less than a year into its life cycle and it’s safe to say Nintendo’s hybrid console is going from strength to strength. Its library of games is expanding and with a new online infrastructure set to arrive sometime in 2018, the handheld/tabletop wonder is set to mega evolve yet again.
There is, however, one glaring omission in Nintendo’s plan and it’s one we really want to see addressed in the next 12 months: apps and third-party software. With Switch’s user base growing at an impressive rate, this really is the time for Nintendo to build on that momentum and give it the depth of multimedia it’s always deserved. So we’ve gathered together some of our most wanted apps that would be right at home on your Home screen.
A bespoke internet browser
So, technically, Switch does have an internet browser of sorts already coded into its OS, but it’s not one designed for normal browsing. Nintendo currently uses a version of Access’ NetFront Browser NX, a low-memory usage software that’s ideal for handheld devices, smart TVs in in-car displays.
What we really need is a bespoke browser that’s far more powerful and built with regular surfing and access in mind. Whether this would be a partnership with an existing piece of software (such as Mozilla Firefox) or a completely new app (which would give Nintendo far more control and remove the need for licensing) remains to be seen, but the groundwork is already there in your device.
Facebook
Much like the previous entry, you can actually access your Facebook page from your Nintendo Switch, but it’s more of a technical bypass to a hidden feature rather than a full-blown app. So rather than being locked to a back-end browser that’s not optimised for general use, Switch would benefit hugely from an official Facebook program.
It’s an easy sell, too. Social media sharing for your screenshots (and your videos) is already coded into Switch, which means a certain level of co-operation with the likes of Facebook and Twitter already exists. So what could be better than playing Super Mario Odyssey, hitting the Home Button and instantly jumping into your timeline?
Twitch
As of writing, you can stream gameplay live to Switch or record clips through third-party software but it requires you to connect a capture card to your Switch and into a decent enough PC. It’s doable, but it’s still a constant reminder of just how well other platforms have woven almost instantaneous broadcasting into their systems.
There are plenty of potential platforms to include – and we’ll cover a second shortly – but Twitch is the easily the most popular. The toxicity found in some parts of its community, and the antics of some of its biggest stars could potential scupper such a partnership, but even an app that simply supports broadcasting would be a huge leap forwards.
Discord
Since Nintendo Switch doesn’t support voice chat of any kind, users have had to find alternative means (most of which involves using headsets that support both wired connections and wireless functionality to your PC or smart device). But it’s just not good enough – if Ninty isn’t going to provide a bespoke service, then it really needs to open up the doorway to third-party apps.
Discord is fast becoming the go-to platform for text-based and VoIP chat on PC, so there’s a strong argument to see it supported on Switch. What better way to link up with your friends than on your server, switching between games and apps without ever breaking the conversation? The alternative is a potential use of VoIP via a Nintendo app, but that doesn’t sound like a very user friendly experience.
Crunchyroll
If you love your anime, then you almost certainly know about the wonders of Crunchyroll. For those still looking bemused at their screen, it’s essentially Netflix for anime and includes some of the biggest series including Bleach, Naruto Shippuden and many more.
While the likes of Netflix does have a decent (and rapidly growing) library of Japanese animation, Crunchyroll is on another level. And, considering the strong crossover with all the JRPG and the Japanese-developed games already on Switch, the Venn diagram of Switch/Crunchyroll users has a huge crossover. It might struggle against Netflix’s mainstream dominance, but it suits Switch down to a tee.
YouTube
We mentioned another streaming service, and here it is: the all powerful YouTube. It seems a given at this stage considering the sheer influence of the platform; plus, the stage for it has already been set by other video apps. NicoNico, for instance, is a Japan-exclusive program, and is effectively a region-specific alternative to YouTube.
Then there’s the US-only launch of Hulu. The streaming service’s arrival on a western version of Switch was a watershed moment back in November 2017, and its instant popularity proves there’s a huge market for video consumption on Nintendo’s new console. The only real roadblock is Nintendo Creators Program, which could potentially lock out the ability to stream on YT.
Twitter
There’s no way we could include a list of apps for Nintendo Switch and not include the world of tweets, likes and GIF overloads. Twitter has become as much a part of our digital lives as Facebook, perhaps more so in recent years, so its inclusion is going to be on everyone’s wish list.
Much like FB, Twitter already has a certain level of connectivity with Switch thanks to the ability to share your screenshots with your followers. Our only concern would be getting a version suitably optimised for Switch – other versions on platforms such as iOS have been notoriously buggy in the past, so we’d want Twitter to hold off until it’s nailed one for Nintendo.
Hulu
Okay, so this one’s a bit cheeky as it’s already out in the US, but for us Europeans we’ve yet to experience the wonder of video streaming on our Joy-Con friendly console. It’s seeded well in the US due to its support for live sports, pro wrestling and other content, but there’s still plenty of other programming that would work well outside North America.
Whatever the form it might take, the fact it already exists is cause for celebration. Imagine being able to watch sports, episodes of your TV show and access live broadcast streams in between matches of Splatoon 2 or DOOM? Switch may not have been envisioned as a multimedia device, but an app such as Hulu could HELP transform it into one.
Netflix
Okay, so if we’re including Hulu and Crunchyroll then there’s no way we can leave out the granddaddy of streaming services. Netflix is already available on almost every device out there, so it stands to reason that the other Big N will have its sight set on one of the fastest selling and most ‘in vogue’ consoles on the market.
There’s a good chance most of you reading this already access Netflix on some form of portable device, be it a smartphone or tablet, but imagine being able to access all of Switch’s incredible games and Netflix’s library from the same place? And, just like YouTube and Amazon Instant Video, Netflix has already featured on Wii U, so the relationship and the concept is already there for the taking.
A proper Activity Log
This might seem like a strange one, but hear us out: if there’s one app we used almost as much as our actual games on 3DS, it was the humble Activity Log. Without any form of achievement/trophy system, there was a tangible joy to tracking your game stats to see which one was in gold, silver or bronze position.
There is technically an in-game time tracker coded into your personal Switch profile, but it’s pretty crude as it a) takes 10 days to present its data and b) it rounds off your progress to the nearest five hour mark. It’s worked well enough for the time being, but much like Switch’s online infrastructure and eShop, it needs a serious overhaul to make it far more in-depth and reactive.
So you’ve heard what we think, but which apps do you want to see on Nintendo Switch? Are there any you disagree with, or anyone we’ve missed completely – let us know below and get the conversation flowing…

This Week At Bungie –1/11/2018
Our weekly blog address is back from its winter nap. We hope you all had happy holidays and enjoyed the Dawning while it lasted. Speaking of the Dawning, we got a lot of feedback about how it could have been better, along with a lot of ideas for Destiny 2. Buckle up and get ready to read, because we’ve taken that feedback and turned it into a plan for future updates.
Game Director Christopher Barrett:
Hey, everyone. At the end of last year, I made a promise that I would update you on our plans for Destiny 2. The team has been hard at work and we’re ready to share where we are headed. We used to wait to talk about game updates until we were certain we could meet our deadlines to avoid letting players down if we changed our plans. No longer. We’re not just listening, we are doing. Please keep in mind that the further out we make promises, the more they are subject to change. With that caveat, here are our plans.
Talk to you again soon,
Christopher Barrett
Return of the Factions
Spoiler Alert: Your favorite (and least favorite) faction leaders are coming back to the Tower next week. They will welcome every Destiny 2 player, on every platform, to determine which of the factions will reign supreme. A special prize will hang in the balance.
Faction Rallies

End: Tuesday, January 23
Pledge your loyalty. Do your faction’s bidding. Earn rewards. Step forward and be counted. Season Two brings new armor ornaments you can earn, along with the base gear.

New Monarchy
Dead Orbit
Once the reward totals have been counted, the winning faction will have a weapon to sell for Glimmer. As always, the cost you pay depends on the pledge you made.
Future War Cult Auto Rifle
New Monarchy Auto Rifle
Dead Orbit Auto Rifle
It’s time to choose who will have your allegiance. Soon we will crown a new winner. Dead Orbit and New Monarchy have both spent time on the throne. Will you finally show some love to Future War Cult?
Heat in the Kitchen
In order for changes to go live in game, hotfixes must be deployed. Another one is nigh. DPS has the details you need.
This is their report.

Writer Justin Bortnick discusses the secrets of the Frog Fractions 2 ARG
Last year, a years-long mystery alternate reality game finally came to a close with the release of Glittermitten Grove, an Adult Swim-published fairy management game that secretly contained Frog Fractions 2. At GDC this year, that ARG will be dissected and discussed by writer and narrative designer Justin Bortnick.
Since we at the Gamasutra Twitch channel could not contain ourselves, we invited Bortnick, who is partly responsible for that ARG, to discuss his work and philosophy on the Gamasutra Twitch channel earlier today.
Since we didn’t want to spoil the contents of Bortnick’s talk (but we were happy to spoil parts of Frog Fractions 2), we decided to discuss his general narrative design philosophy, and the state of ARG experiences as a whole. It was an illuminating conversation, one which you can watch in its entirety up above.
If you’re somewhat in a rush (or are still trying to figure out what Frog Fractions 2 is), here are a few quick takeaways for you based on our chat.
Alternate reality games don’t have to have puzzles…they just wound up that way
During his work, Bortnick consulted with designers who worked on well-known ARGs like I Love Bees (the Halo 2 promotional ARG), and made the observation that an alternate reality experience doesn’t necessarily require puzzle design, it’s just been one of the more successful mechanics that eventually helped impact the genre. What’s interesting about this analysis is that Bortnick points out that there’s a fine line between an ARG and a general real-world puzzle scavenger hunt. What separates the two is finely-crafted narrative design, and a need to react quickly to how your players interpret your hunt.
Sometimes your players come up with more interesting solutions, and it’s useful to use them
Bortnick explained that during the run of the ARG, players often failed to solve puzzles in the way they were intended to be solved…but then stumbled on “solutions” that were more inventive or interesting. In practice, that meant Bortnick would rewrite the “solution” on the fly to help generate more content for players to dig through, all helping cover developer Jim Stormdancer while he worked on the full game.
There’s still more Frog Fractions 2 ARG puzzles out there in new games
To our utmost horror, as we tried to unwind the logic of Frog Fractions 2, Bortnick pointed out that there are still indie games being released with Frog Fractions-related puzzles (like Emily is Away Too). And with that revelation now we realize, that even Gamasutra has become a part of Frog Fractions 2.
For more developer interviews, editor roundtables and gameplay commentary, be sure to follow the Gamasutra Twitch channel.
Gamasutra and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Americas

Japanese console game market experiences growth for the first time in 11 years
The Japanese video game console market has grown for the first time in 11 years, experiencing a spike in sales during 2017.
The increase in sales is attributed to the Nintendo Switch’s speedy hardware sales, which have surpassed 10 million units sold worldwide since its March 2017 debut.
As Kotaku reports, in 2016 Japanese hardware sales were 117.05 billion yen ($1.05 billion), while in 2017 they flourished to 202.37 billion yen ($1.81 billion). Software sales also increased since 2016, going from 182.4 billion yen ($1.63 billion) to 189.3 billion yen ($1.69 billion) the following year.
Japanese gaming markets last saw growth in 2006 when the Nintendo DS Lite, Nintendo Wii, and PS3 were launched, Kotaku also notes.

Best Xbox Insider Program Moments of 2017
As a member of the Xbox Insider Team, I can say with certainty that we’re looking forward to 2018 and all the content we hope to share here and in the Xbox Insider Hub in the coming months. But we also think it’s important to look back on last year’s successes, which were pretty exciting from our point-of-view. To better celebrate together, we’ve compiled a “Best of 2017” list so you can see the changes we made last year, the content we shared in our app and everything you, as Xbox Insiders, helped us accomplish!
New Features Guided by Xbox Insider Feedback
This year, Team Xbox introduced a ton of new features to the Xbox One with the help of our Xbox Insider community. Throughout the summer and fall of 2017, we received feedback from you on features like the new Home, an updated Guide, Light Theme, Arena and more – all of which contributed to some of our biggest updates this year.
Not only did our community try out and impact new system features, but Xbox Insiders also took part in the Xbox Game Pass Beta and helped Team Xbox successfully launch both Xbox Game Pass and new Store features like Digital Gifting.
More Game Content Offered Than Ever Before
We want to make sure our Xbox Insiders have early access to and the ability to provide feedback on all things Xbox, so we’ve spent the past year partnering with game studios to offer our community early playtests and content updates. In 2017 alone, we brought you the Minecraft Better Together Beta on Xbox One and Windows 10, which became our largest playtest ever, as well as early access to Paladins, Dragon Ball FighterZ and more.
Improvements to Xbox Insider Hub Give You More Choices
2017 saw many improvements made to the Xbox Insider Hub, all focused around giving our community more options. Last August, we expanded our Xbox One Update Preview Rings and clearly defined how Xbox Insiders gain access to each. Alongside these changes, we improved our tools to ensure that enrolling in and switching between the various Preview Rings available to you is a nearly instantaneous process.

We didn’t stop at simplifying our Xbox One Update Preview Rings, however. We also fine-tuned console management to allow Xbox Insiders to unenroll a console previously enrolled in “Insider content” (like the Xbox One Update Preview or game-related content) by another user without contacting support.
Xbox Insider XP Rewarded for Bug Reports
This summer, we started rewarding XP to Xbox Insiders who told us about a bug that was later fixed by Team Xbox. We plan to continue this effort in 2018 and would invite you to continue letting us know about any unexpected behavior you encounter via the “Report a problem” tool. We’ll let you know by Xbox One system message if you receive XP for your reports.
Xbox Insider Program Appears in New Places

Another big goal for us this year was to create more opportunities and visibility across our program. To achieve this, we expanded the Xbox Insider Hub to PC so you can complete Quests and Surveys for PC-specific games and features on your Windows 10 device. We also launched our Xbox Insider Blog, partnered with the Windows team to include “Gaming and Xbox” as a category in the Windows Feedback Hub and appeared on “Tips & Tricks.”

Succeed and you may just rebuild Alefgard, the very same world where the series began. A separate free build mode allows you to build to your heart’s content with unlimited resources. And a Nintendo Switch exclusive Great Sabrecub will boost your speed and grant you special material by defeating enemies.
Kirby Star Allies (Nintendo, €59.99 / £49.99 for pre-orders until 15.03.2018, 23:59 local time Regular price €59.99 / £49.99) – Game description : The pink puff is back – in HD – and he’s not alone. Kirby is back – and he’s finally on the Nintendo Switch console in HD! But this time, he’s not alone. Recruit enemies by hitting them with hearts, and gather helpers for a party of up to four characters.
Wii U eShop
