We’re still tracking these known issues:

Audio

  • Users who have Dolby Atmos enabled and console display settings set to 120hz with 36 bits per pixel (12-bit) are experiencing loss of Dolby Atmos audio in some situations.
    • Workaround: Disable 120hz or set Video Fidelity to 30 bits per pixel (10-bit) or lower.
  • Some users have reported that Dolby Atmos for Headphones audio setting changes when the console is rebooted/updated.
    • Note: If you attempt to set the audio to Dolby Atmos for Headphones and see a message advising you to launch the Dolby Access App, please file feedback before launching the app.

Game DVR

  • Some users have reported that clips are being recorded without audio. We are aware and investigating.
    • Note: When reporting the issue, please be sure to include details about what resolution, length, and game you were trying to record.

Guide

  • Some users have reported that the audio mixer cannot be used to adjust chat/game audio levels.

My Games & Apps

  • Users have reported seeing black tiles instead of game artwork when browsing their collection.
    • Note: We are still investigating the issue, please report the issue again from the console if you have done so with a prior update and are still seeing this behavior.
  • Some titles in collection may appear with a “trial” tag incorrectly in collection.

New Store Experience

  • Some titles may display a “Not currently available” message on the product page and will be unavailable to purchase
    • Note: Users can use the Microsoft Store on the web or Windows to complete purchases for these items.
  • Users will not be able to use the “gifting” option for both Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles at this time.
  • Users will not be able to use the “Build a bundle” functionality at this time

Don’t Miss: The tricky history of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

[In the latest in a series of Gamasutra-exclusive bonus material originally to be included in Bill Loguidice and Matt Barton’s new book Vintage Games: An Insider Look at the History of Grand Theft Auto, Super Mario, and the Most Influential Games of All Time, the duo presents a history of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, the game that popularized a niche genre and sparked a host of imitators in the early part of this decade.]

Extreme sports video games have a long and storied history, culminating with the first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater in 1999, which ramped the genre to superstar status. As we’ve seen, nearly every game in this series has predecessors, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is no different.

Games like 720 Degrees, a 1986 arcade skateboarding game from Atari, and Skate or Die!, a 1987 multiplatform home release from Electronic Arts, made scores of gamers happy, but it was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater that would take the genre successfully into the realm of 3D[1], offering unparalleled levels of control and fluid motion so critical to such games, in turn spawning a whole slew of me-too products that wanted to outperform and be more extreme than skateboarding icon Tony Hawk himself.

Of course, extreme sports — also referred to as action or adventure sports — are not limited to the skateboard. The term can represent any over-the-top or dangerous sporting activity, which is particularly at home in the world of video games.

From the early Olympic sports video games, culminating with Epyx’s multiplatform California Games (1987), which featured skateboarding, freestyle footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc, and BMX minigames, to the classic NBA Jam (1993) and NFL Blitz (1997) series of highly stylized and simplified arcade sports video games, there has been no shortage of compelling, action-packed alternatives to traditional sports gaming.

What Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, which has now generated $1 billion in sales across the course of the series,  added was an extraordinary level of realism to the over-the-top antics that resonated with many players who were turned off by the overly competitive nature of the previous games. By making it about technique over style, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater expanded its audience to far more players than any other game of its type before.

[1] Sega’s hit Top Skater (aka, Top Skater Sega Skateboarding) arcade game from 1997, which featured a skateboard controller and railings as part of its oversized cabinet, was one of the first 3D skateboarding simulations, but was as much about racing as it was about performing stylish tricks.

Despite the eventual release of mostly mediocre home skateboarding controllers thanks to the popularity of games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Top Skater never received a home port.

News - Pokemon Go Is Making Big Changes To Raid Battles

Pokemon Go Is Making Big Changes To Raid Battles

Mega Evolutions are finally making their debut in Pokemon Go this week, but that's not the only big change coming to the game. Coinciding with the launch of Mega Evolutions, developer Niantic is making some significant adjustments to Raid Battles.

First, Niantic is removing two- and four-star Raids, leaving only the one-, three-, and five-star Raid tiers. According to product lead Matt Slemon, the reason these Raids are being removed is because they weren't as popular as the other tiers. Their value proposition also wasn't as apparent; for example, players would know at a glance that they could clear a three-star Raid with one or two companions, although it wasn't as obvious how many players it would take to beat a four-star Raid or what the incentive was to join one of those over a five-star Raid.

Although two- and four-star Raids will no longer appear in the game, the rewards you'd normally get from them are being folded into one- and three-star Raids, respectively. Niantic says this solution offers "the best of both worlds" and should make Raids more fun and rewarding to join.

[Tut] Pretty Print JSON [Python One-Liner]
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 08-26-2020, 10:20 AM - Forum: Python - No Replies

Pretty Print JSON [Python One-Liner]

Problem: Given a JSON object. How to pretty print it from the shell/terminal/command line using a Python one-liner?

Minimal Example: You have given the following JSON object:

{"Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"}

And you want to get the following print output:

{ "Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"
}

How to accomplish this using a Python one-liner?

Method 0: Python Program + json.dump

The default way to accomplish this in a Python script is to import the json library to solve the issue:

Exercise: Execute the script. What’s the output? Now change the number of indentation spaces to 2!

However, what if you want to run this from your operating system terminal as a one-liner command? Let’s dive into the four best ways!

Method 1: Terminal / Shell / Command Line with Echo + Pipe + json.tool

The echo command prints the JSON to the standard output. This is then piped as standard input to the json.tool program that pretty prints the JSON object to the standard output:

echo '{"Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"}' | python -m json.tool

The output is the prettier:

{ "Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"
}

The pipe operator | redirects the output to the standard input of the Python script.

Method 2: Use a File as Input with json.tool

An alternative is the simple:

python -m json.tool file.json

This method is best if you have stored your JSON object in the file.json file. If the file contains the same data, the output is the same, too:

{ "Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"
}

Method 3: Use Web Resource with json.tool

If your JSON file resides on a given URL https://example.com, you’ll best use the following one-liner:

curl https://example.com/ | python -m json.tool

Again, assuming the same JSON object residing on the server, the output is the same:

{ "Alice": "24", "Bob": "28"
}

Method 4: Use jq

This is the simplest way but it assumes that you have the jq program installed on your machine. You can download jq here and also read about the excellent quick-start resources here.

Let’s dive into the code you can run in your shell:

jq <<< '{ "foo": "lorem", "bar": "ipsum" }'
{ "bar": "ipsum", "foo": "lorem"
}

The <<< operator passes the string on the right to the standard input of the command on the left. You can learn more about this special pipe operator in this SO thread.

While this method is not a Python script, it still works beautifully when executed from a Linux or MacOS shell or the Windows Powershell / command line.

Python One-Liners Book

Python programmers will improve their computer science skills with these useful one-liners.

Python One-Liners

Python One-Liners will teach you how to read and write “one-liners”: concise statements of useful functionality packed into a single line of code. You’ll learn how to systematically unpack and understand any line of Python code, and write eloquent, powerfully compressed Python like an expert.

The book’s five chapters cover tips and tricks, regular expressions, machine learning, core data science topics, and useful algorithms. Detailed explanations of one-liners introduce key computer science concepts and boost your coding and analytical skills. You’ll learn about advanced Python features such as list comprehension, slicing, lambda functions, regular expressions, map and reduce functions, and slice assignments. You’ll also learn how to:

Leverage data structures to solve real-world problems, like using Boolean indexing to find cities with above-average pollution
Use NumPy basics such as array, shape, axis, type, broadcasting, advanced indexing, slicing, sorting, searching, aggregating, and statistics
Calculate basic statistics of multidimensional data arrays and the K-Means algorithms for unsupervised learning
Create more advanced regular expressions using grouping and named groups, negative lookaheads, escaped characters, whitespaces, character sets (and negative characters sets), and greedy/nongreedy operators
Understand a wide range of computer science topics, including anagrams, palindromes, supersets, permutations, factorials, prime numbers, Fibonacci numbers, obfuscation, searching, and algorithmic sorting

By the end of the book, you’ll know how to write Python at its most refined, and create concise, beautiful pieces of “Python art” in merely a single line.

AppleInsider - Apple’s Tim Cook receives stock award worth $282M, sells $132M
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 08-26-2020, 10:20 AM - Forum: Apples Mac and OS X - No Replies

Apple’s Tim Cook receives stock award worth $282M, sells $132M

Apple CEO Tim Cook this week reaped nearly $132 million after acquiring and immediately selling 560,000 restricted stock units meted out as time- and performance-based awards.

Revealed in a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Tuesday, Cook on Monday saw a batch of 560,000 RSUs vest for satisfying performance goals set forth by the company’s board of directors.

After Apple’s statutory tax withholding, which came out to 294,840 stock units, Cook was left with 265,160 vested units that were immediately sold in multiple trades executed at prices ranging from $493.50 to $500.11 on Monday and Tuesday. Withheld units were traded on Monday at $503.43.

As usual, the trades were made pursuant to Cook’s trading plan adopted on Feb. 28.

The fully vested award includes 280,000 time-based RSUs and 280,000 performance-based RSUs. Performance-based RSUs were calculated by monitoring Apple’s performance relative to the S&P 500. To receive the full grant, Apple had to land in the top third of firms over a three-year period from Aug. 25, 2017 through Aug. 24, 2020, which it did. Adjusted for dividends, Apple’s starting value was calculated at $157.56, with the stock ending the period at $464.63.

Total shareholder return for the three-year period was 194.89%, placing Apple in the 99th percentile and 7th among the 442 companies on the index.

Cook has 1,260,000 RSUs remaining in his current award, all of which are slated to vest on Aug. 24, 2021. To see the RSUs convert in full, the executive must continue employment at Apple and maintain the company’s financial health.

Today’s filing comes a day after a disclosure noted Cook’s donation of 10,715 owned shares to an unknown charity. The gift was worth more than $5 million when the transaction was completed on Friday.

Microsoft - Xbox One and Xbox Series X get a fresh look, streamlined experience
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 08-26-2020, 10:20 AM - Forum: Windows - No Replies

Xbox One and Xbox Series X get a fresh look, streamlined experience

Summary

  • The August 2020 Xbox One Update is here with improvements to Guide.
  • It’s even easier to connect with your friends (messages, parties, volume sliders).
  • The new Xbox look and feel starts rolling out to Xbox Insiders today, along with changes to profiles and sign-in.

Last week Chris Novak, Head of Xbox Research and Design, shared our vision of a unified Xbox Experience that puts gamers at the center, enabling them to stay connected to their games, friends and communities. It’s a vision we have been building toward for over a year, culminating with the release of Xbox Series X this November.

The August Xbox 2020 Update is the next step on that journey and is rolling out soon to all customers. It includes a variety of improvements, including bigger changes like a new landing page for the Xbox Guide, to smaller, more subtle improvements like individual volume sliders for party members.

Today also marks the first time that some of you will be able to experience the new Xbox experience yourselves with some of the features Chris talked about last week becoming available for Xbox Insiders. Let’s dig in!

Guide

We took the first steps to update the Xbox Guide in May, simplifying the layout to make it easier for gamers to use. Since then, we’ve been refining it based on your feedback, and implemented the following:

Improved Landing Page

The new Guide landing page is designed to be cleaner and easier to read at-a-glance. The layout makes it easier to navigate between the most recent things you were doing, the Dashboard, and My Games and Apps. For those of you who want to customize the Guide, you’ll have the option to change the order of the tabs that show up. We’ve also added buttons to the bottom of the page for important utilities like notifications, search, and audio settings, making it easier to access them from wherever you are.

Connect with your friends

Speaking of notifications, the August update includes a new notifications inbox, easily accessed by clicking the notification bell on the bottom of the Guide. This inbox combines all your alerts, game invites and message notifications into a single feed. Best of all, the inbox includes notifications from across all Xbox apps, including the new Xbox mobile app that we’ll introduce into beta soon. Acting on a notification in one place clears it everywhere, meaning you’ll always be up to date!

Parties and Chats made easy

In June Parties and Chat were combined into a single tab, making it easier to communicate with your friends and fellow gamers. We’ve continued to improve this experience to make it more useful, with the addition of a preview of the text in your new messages. We’ve also added a frequently requested feature – individual volume controls for each party member!

More tips and tricks for new Xbox gamers

Finally, we also aimed to improve the Guide experience for first-time gamers. Guide pages are now easier to read and understand, and shortcuts and button commands are more consistent. We’ve added hints tailored for new customers, helping them understand the purpose of each page, and how to get started using it.

New Activity Feed look

With the new Xbox experience we also set out to rethink how community and game developers’ content is displayed on Xbox. We want the focus to be on the content being shared and highlight the awesome screenshots, videoclips and posts players create.

You will notice all posts shared on Xbox are now the same size: no more guessing on how they will show up in the Community or Club pages. We have made improvements in the Game, People and Community Content Blocks on Home, videoclips auto-play, reduction of metadata over posts and display of engagement counts. We have also introduced shortcuts for easier engagement with the post and for easier discovery of players and games the post relates to.

Coming Soon for Xbox Insiders

We wouldn’t have been able to deliver the features above without the help of our Xbox Insiders. The feedback, suggestions and bug reports ensure we’re always delivering the best possible product for everyone. Not only is the August update live this week for everyone, but this month our Xbox Insiders are also getting the first chance to play with some upcoming new features that you’ll see below.

A fresh look and feel

All the ways you use Xbox should feel inviting and familiar, whether you are on the couch relaxing or streaming your favorite game on the go. We’ve been updating the visual look of our apps across phone and PC for the past year, and now it is console’s turn.

Starting this week Insiders will be receiving a visual update to their Xbox One consoles to better match our other experiences on the PC and mobile devices. This includes some changes to our tile shape, fonts, and focus indicator across the experience. However, the overall layout of most of the pages will not be drastically changing, so you don’t have to learn a whole new UI when Xbox Series X launches.

Express yourself with Profile Themes

User Profiles on Xbox are an important part of our community experience: they are one of the top destinations on console, and your profile should be a space for you to express yourself through customization.

You will be able to select from several different Themes for your profile when we start flighting this feature, including some game Themes from Xbox Game Studios – and more will be added more over time!

Profile Themes are also available in the Xbox App on PC and through Game Bar.

Sign in on multiple devices

Earlier this month, we announced that cloud gaming was coming to the Game Pass app on Android, and the fan response has been amazing.  Thousands of gamers have played titles like Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 on their phones. Gamers with an Xbox have enjoyed their saved games seamlessly roaming between the cloud and their console, picking up where they left off no matter where they choose to play.

To make that experience even more seamless, we are making some changes to the way you sign in on Xbox.  You will be able to sign in on as many Xboxes or Xbox Apps as you want, all at the same time. Now you can use your Xbox console as much as you want for other watching movies, using apps, chatting with friends, and more. When it comes to games, you’ll be able to play on one device at a time so all your progress, achievements and saves stay up to date and synced whichever device you choose to play on.

Want to use your console upstairs while your roommate uses the Xbox in the living room to watch TV? Maybe try out the latest cloud gaming game while watching a movie with the family? We want you to have the freedom to choose.

[embedded content]

If you want a closer look at all of these updates, the team walked through them on Major Nelson’s video podcast – check out the video above and here.

More to come

We’re looking forward to your feedback as we continue to roll out the new, unified experience on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles.  All the updates to the Xbox ecosystem are built to keep the gamer at the center of the entire experience – stay tuned for more.

Fedora - Contribute at the Fedora Test Week for Btrfs
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 08-26-2020, 10:20 AM - Forum: Linux, FreeBSD, and Unix types - No Replies

Contribute at the Fedora Test Week for Btrfs

The Fedora Project is changing the default file system for desktop variants, including Fedora Workstation, Fedora KDE, and more, for the first time since Fedora 11. Btrfs will replace ext4 as the default filesystem in Fedora 33. The Change is code complete, and has been testable in Rawhide as the default file system since early July. The Fedora Workstation working group and QA team have organized a test week from Monday, Aug 31, 2020 through Monday, Sep 07, 2020. Refer to the wiki page for links to the test images you’ll need to participate. Read below for details.

How does a test week work?

A test week is an event where anyone can help make sure changes in Fedora work well in an upcoming release. Fedora community members often participate, and the public is welcome at these events. If you’ve never contributed before, this is a perfect way to get started.

To contribute, you only need to be able to do the following things:

  • Download test materials, which include some large files
  • Read and follow directions step by step

The wiki page for the kernel test day has a lot of good information on what and how to test. After you’ve done some testing, you can log your results in the test day web application. If you’re available on or around the day of the event, please do some testing and report your results.

Happy testing, and we hope to see you during the test week!

Poll: What’s The Best Final Fantasy Game On Nintendo Consoles?

Best Final Fantasy Games

The imminent re-release of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition has got us looking back over the long-running and celebrated (and confusingly numbered in the West) Final Fantasy series. Although the entire saga began on Nintendo’s Famicom, there was a long while from the mid-’90s that the mainline games weren’t to be found on Nintendo consoles; remakes on handhelds, yes, but not the new numbered entries.

Thankfully, the situation has been rectified somewhat thanks to numerous re-releases on Switch of games previously only available elsewhere. Although there are a few entries unaccounted for (XIII, MMORPGs XI and XIV, and XV in its full form), Nintendo gamers can now enjoy the majority of the series. With that in mind, we thought a ranking of all the mainline entries was in order, and we’d like your help. Just what are the best Final Fantasy games on Nintendo systems?

Below you’ll find the candidates; registered Nintendo Life users can click on the stars and rate any (or all) of the games out of 10. If you’ve previously rated these games–excellent!–you can just put your feet up. Much like our Top 50 platform polls, the resulting ranking (which we’ll publish soon) will be created from the database of NL User Ratings and is therefore fluid and subject to change, even after publication. If you’re in the middle of a Final Fantasy game and don’t want to rate it yet, no sweat – you can add your score to the game at any time in the future and it will still count and potentially influence the ranking.

We’ve dispensed with the bewildering host of spin-offs, crossovers, remakes and more that form one of gaming’s biggest juggernaut franchises – just the mainline games today, folks. To keep things simpler in voting terms, we’ve only included one version of the games to pick from below. Final Fantasy II, for example, is the Famicom original rather than the GBA’s dual pack of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. While remade versions might have altered the base games–sometimes rather substantially–those differences (and preferences) are ripe material for discussion when the results are in.

We’ve also included the ‘demade’ Pocket Edition of Final Fantasy XV; we’re under no illusions and don’t expect it to rank highly, but it’s the only version available on Nintendo platformers. The nature of the ‘voting’ here makes it easy to discount from the final ranking if it doesn’t qualify in your book.

So, big swords at the ready! Let’s get rating…

Rate each Final Fantasy game:

Thanks for rating! We’ll be finding out the results in the near future, but remember: much like our platform Top 50s, the list here is fluid, so even if you miss out on voting before the results are revealed, you can still influence the ranking after publication.
