The latest batch of My Nintendo game discounts for Europe has now gone live, giving players the usual chance to grab a handful of games at reduced prices.

Marvel's Avengers Will Add Spider-Man, But Only On PS4 And PS5

Developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Spider-Man will join Marvel's Avengers' roster as free, post-launch DLC. The studio also confirmed that the webslinger will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The team shared no specific information about how Spider-Man will play. There are also no screenshots of Spider-Man in-engine, signaling that Crystal Dynamics and co-developer Eidos-Montreal are still hard at work on the playable character.

Still, in a lengthy PlayStation Blog post, Crystal Dynamics' associate art director Jeff Adams outlined what we can expect when Spider-Man arrives in the game after Marvel's Avengers launches on September 4. Adams said Spider-Man's "impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat," stating he wants players to feel "graceful and light" while playing him.

In second place is Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2, which has turned out to be another faithful tribute the classic 2D Castlevanias.

In our review, we said that Curse of the Moon 2’s slightly higher difficulty level and its wider cast of characters help it to just edge out its already excellent predecessor. The fantastic boss designs and excellent sprite work didn’t hurt the game’s chances of making into this list, either. Another title worth your attention this month.

Ever fancied playing a Metroidvania where you’re the boss instead of the one hunting it down? That’s the premise behind Carrion, and we loved it so much that it’s taking our top prize this month.

It’s not perfect – we would have preferred a map to help us along and we found the game’s overall structure to be a little too formulaic – but its core gameplay of ripping through room after room, tearing people to bits as you destroy everything in sight, is a particularly fun experience. It’s a highly violent affair but if you’re cool with that, make sure to read all about it in our review and then get it downloaded pronto.

How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released primarily as a digital Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.

Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets 3 points, second choice gets 2 points, and third choice gets 1 point. These votes are then tallied to create a top three list, with the overall winner taking that month’s top prize.

Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #54 – Dr. Mario

Welcome to Box Art Brawl, our weekly bout to find out which regional box art variant is the best, according to you lovely lot.

Last week was the inaugural edition of the ‘Duel’ variant of Box Art Brawl, which saw two versions of Tetris for the Game Boy square off against each other. Despite a rather fetching entry from the East, it was the version that released in North America and Europe which won over 80% of your hearts.

This week we’re sticking with the Game Boy as the ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ plumber tries his healing hands at medicine in Dr. Mario, the puzzler that launched for both Game Boy and NES 30 years ago last week. It’s an unusual game that released across both home and handheld consoles, with box art that looked more-or-less the same on both. We’ve gone with the Game Boy just to keep things more compact.

If you’re after more info on the game, we recommend checking out Jeremy Parish’s excellent Game Boy Works video on the subject. In the meantime, the (alleged) doctor is in. He’ll see you now…

North America / Europe

Featuring a red logo with a serif font and the stylised prescription symbol ‘℞’, the version we got in the West shows a wall of capsules in the background as a trio of primary-coloured gribblies lark around. Mario stands in the foreground on the right against a circular orange something brandishing a clipboard, a thermometer and a big grin. In fact, he appears to be doing his finest Dr. Nick Riviera impression.

It’s colourful, the enemies look mischievous and fun, and–assuming you’ve got the same infantile sense of humour we do–it’s got a winning tagline laden with eyebrow-raising double entendre. A strong opener, although it’s arguably a bit busy, especially when viewed from a distance.

Japan

The Japanese version takes a more scientific approach, with ‘Doctor’ Mario looking far more scholarly and knowledgeable. The oversized capsule he’s pointing to is flanked by a diagram of the enemy virus as he lectures us on the subject. The subtle chemical formula in the top left adds extra weight to his medical credentials, to the point where you’d be forgiven for allowing the jovial plumber to perform complex surgery on you. Come on! He’s pointing at the red end of a capsule that he’s labelled ‘CAPSULE’ – of course he’s qualified!

The logo font still has serifs, although the bubble style doesn’t scream ‘professional medical practitioner’. Still, we like this a lot.

Microsoft joins Open Source Security Foundation

Microsoft has invested in the security of open-source software for many years and today I’m excited to share that Microsoft is joining industry partners to create the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a new cross-industry collaboration hosted at the Linux Foundation. The OpenSSF brings together work from the Linux Foundation-initiated Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII), the GitHub-initiated Open Source Security Coalition (OSSC), and other open-source security efforts to improve the security of open-source software by building a broader community, targeted initiatives, and best practices. Microsoft is proud to be a founding member alongside GitHub, Google, IBM, JPMC, NCC Group, OWASP Foundation, and Red Hat.

Open-source software is core to nearly every company’s technology strategy and securing it is an essential part of securing the supply chain for all, including our own. With the ubiquity of open source software, attackers are currently exploiting vulnerabilities across a wide range of critical services and infrastructure, including utilities, medical equipment, transportation, government systems, traditional software, cloud services, hardware, and IoT.

Open-source software is inherently community-driven and as such, there is no central authority responsible for quality and maintenance.  Because source code can be copied and cloned, versioning and dependencies are particularly complex. Open-source software is also vulnerable to attacks against the very nature of the community, such as attackers becoming maintainers of projects and introducing malware. Given the complexity and communal nature of open source software, building better security must also be a community-driven process.

Microsoft has been involved in several open-source security initiatives over the years and we are looking forward to bringing these together under the umbrella of the OpenSSF. For example, we have been actively working with OSSC in four primary areas:

Identifying Security Threats to Open Source Projects

Helping developers to better understand the security threats that exist in the open-source software ecosystem and how those threats impact specific open source projects.

Security Tooling

Providing the best security tools for open source developers, making them universally accessible and creating a space where members can collaborate to improve upon existing security tooling and develop new ones to suit the needs of the broader open source community.

Security Best Practices

Providing open-source developers with best practice recommendations, and with an easy way to learn and apply them. Additionally, we have been focused on ensuring best practices to be widely distributed to open source developers and will leverage an effective learning platform to do so.

Vulnerability Disclosure

Creating an open-source software ecosystem where the time to fix a vulnerability and deploy that fix across the ecosystem is measured in minutes, not months.

We are looking forward to participating in future OpenSSF efforts including securing critical open source projects (assurance, response), developer identity, and bounty programs for open-source security bugs.

We are excited and honored to be advancing the work with the OSSC into the OpenSSF and we look forward to the many improvements that will be developed as a part of this foundation with the open-source community.
