Sony Uses Many Robots To Make A New PS4 Every 30 Seconds

A new report from Nikkei's Asian Review offers a behind-the-scenes look at Sony's PlayStation manufacturing plant in Japan. One of the most notable takeaways is that the process of making a PlayStation console is now largely automated--that's right, robots are building game consoles.

The report says this advanced automation allows the PlayStation manufacturing plant in Kisarazu to assemble one PlayStation 4 console every 30 seconds.

There are humans involved in the process in a limited capacity--two humans put bare motherboards on the assembly line, and two others package the final consoles once they're made.

  [Tut] How to Create a Python List of Size n?
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 07-06-2020, 09:09 AM - Forum: Python - No Replies

How to Create a Python List of Size n?

To create a list of n placeholder elements, multiply the list of a single placeholder element with n. For example, use [None] * 5 to create a list [None, None, None, None, None] with five elements None. You can then overwrite some elements with index assignments. In the example, lst[2] = 42 would result in the changed list [None, None, 42, None, None].

Let’s play with an interactive code shell before you’ll dive into the detailed solution!

Exercise: Initialize the list with n=20 placeholder elements -1 and run the code.

Next, you’ll learn about the more formal problem and dive into the step-by-step solution.

Problem: Given an integer n. How to initialize a list with n placeholder elements?

# n=0 --> []
# n=1 --> [None]
# n=5 --> [None, None, None, None, None]

Solution: Use the list concatenation operation *.

n = 5
lst = [None] * n
print(lst)
# [None, None, None, None, None]

You can modify the element n as you like. In subsequent operations, you can overwrite all placeholder None list elements using simple index assignment operations:

lst[0] = 'Alice'
lst[1] = 0
lst[2] = 42
lst[3] = 12
lst[4] = 'hello'
print(lst)
# ['Alice', 0, 42, 12, 'hello']

However, there’s a small problem if you want to create a list with mutable objects (such as a list of lists):

lst = [[]] * n
print(lst)
# [[], [], [], [], []] lst[2].append(42) print(lst)
# [[42], [42], [42], [42], [42]]

Changing one list element changes all list elements because all list elements refer to the same list object in memory:

The solution is to use list comprehension (see my detailed blog tutorial on list comprehension for a complete guide):

lst = [[] for _ in range(n)]
print(lst)
# [[], [], [], [], []] lst[2].append(42)
print(lst)
# [[], [], [42], [], []]

In the following visualization, you can see how each element now refers to an independent list object in memory:

Exercise: Run the visualization and convince yourself that only one element is modified! Why is this the case?

Where to Go From Here?

Murder plots and cult exposure via iCloud in the Apple Crime Blotter

An alleged looter gets looted himself, an iPhone photo is part of a public corruption probe, and more on the Apple crime blotter.

The latest in an occasional AppleInsider series, looking at the world of Apple-related crime.

iPhone and iCloud evidence used against a soldier accused of plotting murder with Satanic neo-Nazi cult

A 22-year-old member of the U.S. Army was charged in mid-June with joining up with the Order of the Nine Angles (O9A), described by prosecutors as “an occult-based neo-Nazi and racially motivated violent extremist group,” in a plot to murder U.S. soldiers.

According to the indictment, filed in the Southern District of New York, the government seized both an iPhone and iCloud accounts belonging to the soldier, Ethan Phelan Melzer, and discovered evidence related to the plot.

Melzer has been charged with six counts, including conspiracy to murder U.S. nationals, attempted murder, and provision and attempted provision of material support to terrorists.

Facebook video showed officer stomping on protestor’s iPhone

A woman arrested at a protest on June 1 in Worcester, Mass., shot footage that appeared to show a police officer stomping on her iPhone. Worcester Star-Telegram reports the woman was streaming video to Facebook Live at the moment she was rushed by officers, and the video appeared to show a boot stomping on her phone.

While the phone continued to record, the woman narrated, and her father even left a comment on the live video stating “a policeman just stepped on your phone.”

State trooper accused of texting nude photos from woman’s phone

A Minnesota state trooper is being investigated on allegations that, after he arrested a woman for drunk driving, he texted himself the woman’s intimate photos from her iPhone. According to KSTP, the incident took place in March, and when the woman got her phone back, she noticed that photos had been texted to an unknown number.

The officer is being investigated by both the State Patrol and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and the warrants say he admitted to texting himself the photos.

Man charged with identity theft made Apple Store purchases

A Massachusetts man was arrested on June 25 and charged by the U.S. Attorney with using stolen identities to make purchases. In addition to spending on Rolexes and two different rental cars that were never returned, the man’s fraudulent expenditures included “large purchases at the Apple Store.”

The man, who faces federal wire fraud charges, also made buys of over $100,000 from an unnamed office supply retail chain, “via an employee of the office retailer who was complicit in the scheme.”

iPhone photo of wads of cash surfaces in Los Angeles politician’s indictment

A photograph, taken from an iPhone, of a massive amount of Australian money has emerged as a piece of evidence in a widespread corruption probe that stretches from Australia to the Los Angeles City council. The Los Angeles Magazinewrites U.S. prosecutors released the photo in relation to the indictment of Councilman Jose Huizar, who has been brought up on racketeering charges.

The magazine reports Huizar “allegedly presided over a criminal enterprise that received more than $1.5 million in exchange for pushing forward certain real estate development projects,” and that the cash was brought back from Australia, with the intention of converting it to dollars to avoid U.S. banking requirements. The iPhone photo, per the Sydney Morning Herald, was taken by a former aide who has pled guilty.

Caught on film: man carrying iMac during looting has it taken by thieves

A video clip has emerged from the early June looting in New York City in which a man, who had possibly looted an iMac from an unspecified local store had the computer taken from him, in turn, by another group of looters.

Footage posted by The Daily Mail shows two men attacking the man holding the iMac, punching him, and then taking the computer. The newspaper describes the computer as “allegedly stolen,” but it’s not established that the first man actually looted it.

Find My iPhone pings stolen AirPods in evidence bag

Three men in Tennessee were arrested in late June on charges that they stole cars, and police say they were charged in part thanks to Find My iPhone. According to The Cleveland Banner, the accused thieves also entered unlocked vehicles, and took several items, including a set of AirPods, from one of them.

The AirPods didn’t lead to the arrest but did provide evidence. The owners of the AirPods “were able to send an audible alert from their Apple Find My iPhone App to their stolen AirPods, pinging the same set recovered from the scene by detectives,” which was located in an evidence bag.

Find My iPhone locates stolen car and U-Haul

In another Find My iPhone case, the tool helped a woman use her iPad to find her stolen car, as well as an attached U-Haul trailer that she had used to move most of her possessions. CBS 12 reports the woman was moving from Minneapolis to Las Vegas when, after stopping at a hotel, she noticed the car and trailer were gone.

However, she soon activated Find My iPhone to search for her iPad, which was packed in the U-Haul, and the car and trailer were found about a mile away, although many of the items have still not been recovered.

George Nader, Mueller witness whose iPhone was seized, gets 10 years

George Nader, a minor figure in the Russiagate scandal who served as a witness in Robert Mueller’s investigation, was sentenced on June 27 to 10 years in prison. Per CNN, Nader pled guilty earlier in the spring to two counts of sex crimes involving children, after the government had seized his iPhones.

In 2018, FBI agents had taken Nader’s iPhones upon his return to the U.S. to search for Russia-related evidence, but when they searched them, they discovered child pornography.

South African entertainer offers reward for lost iPhone charger

The South African musical performer known as Mampintsha has offered a reward of R800 (about $46 in U.S. dollars) for the safe return of his lost iPhone charger. According to Briefly, the entertainer said on social media that he “would not buy a new charger because they are expensive but would rather get his original on back,” and also “stirred the pot by saying that the theft of the charger could make people into enemies.”

Woman’s text from Apple Watch stopped attempted rape

A man broke into a woman’s apartment intending to rape her, but the woman used her Apple Watch to text her boyfriend to summon help, which led to the man’s arrest.

The Calgary Sunwrites prosecutors argued in court in late June for the defendant to receive a sentence of eight to 10 years.

Duo arrested for stealing iPhone, axe from disabled vehicle

Two men in Virginia were arrested for entering a broken-down vehicle on the side of a highway and taking several items, including an iPhone, an automotive diagnostic scanner, a camping axe and nearly $40 in loose change.

According to Fredericksburg.com, when the owner of the vehicle returned to repair it, he noticed a van parked behind it, and someone in his car. The van fled, but the car owner took down the license plate, leading the men to be arrested at a nearby 7-Eleven.

Couple in Australia sought in iPhone fraud

A couple is accused of a scheme in which they allegedly used the information from a man’s stolen wallet to set up a line of credit and buy 14 iPhones. The fraudulent purchases were made at the Booragoon mobile phone shop on March 4, reports Perth Now.

New eShop Release Final Sword Includes Zelda’s Lullaby As Background Music

Earlier this week, a company called HUP Games published Final Sword on the Switch eShop. If you’ve never heard of this game before, it’s described as the “original action RPG” for Nintendo Switch and allows players to enjoy “powerful battles” in an open-world setting for $17.70.

In reality, it’s a mobile port and the title uses generic game engine assets. To top it off, it also features music from the Nintendo series, The Legend of Zelda. GoNintendo notes how the “stolen music” playing in the background “straight-up rips off” Zelda’s Lullaby. Have a listen below:

Sound familiar? If you’ve played some of the earlier Zelda games it should. We’re not sure how this one slipped by Nintendo, but if we were to take a guess, it’s probably because stacks of games are getting approved for the Switch eShop on a weekly basis.

Now that the word is out, Final Sword is expected to disappear from Nintendo’s digital store in the coming days. If we get any updates, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Animal Crossing Glitch Prevents Players From Walking Across Their Zen Bridges

Animal Crossing - Nintendo Life IMG© Nintendo Life

On Friday, Nintendo rolled out Version 1.3.0 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It added swimming, diving, wet suits, and also fixed various bugs. Unfortunately, it’s also added a new glitch. A number of players are no longer able to cross over the zen bridges on their island.

This broken bridge glitch seems to only be affecting some players at the moment – although there are a lot of videos on social media that demonstrate what exactly is happening. The player walks to the middle of the bridge and is seemingly blocked by an invisible wall. Take a look below:

Fortunately, there are a few ways to deal with this – but they’re not exactly convenient. If you swap to the game’s camera mode you should then be able to pass through the invisible barrier. Otherwise, you can visit Tom Nook in Resident Services and get the bridge demolished.

Animal Crossing players have reported the same issues over on the official Nintendo support forums. A lot of users also note how their zen bridge is located on the third level of their island – so it could be something to do with the game’s boundaries.

I have a diagonal facing bridge on my 3rd level cliff and after the July 2nd update for the diving set, I cannot cross it anymore? I tried crossing from the other side but it stops my character from crossing the bridge. What do I do?

With any luck, Nintendo is already working on a patch for this. Have you encountered this glitch yourself? Tell us down below.

Fixes Implemented

Thanks to the hard work of Xbox engineers, we are happy to announce the following fixes have been implemented for this build:

System

  • Various updates to properly reflect local languages across the console
    • Note: Users participating in Preview may see “odd” text across the console, for more information go here.

Known Issues

We understand some issues have been listed in previous Xbox Insider Release Notes. These items aren’t being ignored, but it will take Xbox engineers more time to find a solution.

We’re still tracking these known issues:

Activity Feeds

  • Users looking at Activity Feeds in various areas (Clubs, Profile, etc.) may notice some odd UI issues as well as Previews not loading when browsing content. The developers are aware and working on the behavior.

Audio

  • Users who have Dolby Atmos enabled and console display settings set to 120hz with 36 bits per pixel (12-bit) are experiencing loss of Dolby Atmos audio in some situations.
    • Workaround: Disable 120hz or set Video Fidelity to 30 bits per pixel (10-bit) or lower.
  • Some users have reported that Dolby Atmos for Headphones audio setting changes when the console is rebooted/updated.
    • Note: If you attempt to set the audio to Dolby Atmos for Headphones and see a message advising you to launch the Dolby Access App, please file feedback before launching the app.

Game DVR

  • We are aware game clips (non-4K and 4K) are not recording at all or recording the incorrect length with recent updates. We are investigating.
    • Note: Make sure you report the behavior on the console as soon as you record the clip and notice either behavior.
    • Workaround: We’ve implemented a fix where clips that do not record in 4K will instead record in 1080p instead.

Guide

  • When installing or updating a game/app, the installation progress bar may not show progress.  The issue is known and being investigated.
  • We’ve received reports that the Friends tab is not showing the correct status of online/offline friends.
  • Some users may notice that the Guide has changed appearance and functionality, this is expected behavior as there are certain experiences being flighted among a random subset of users in Preview.

Messages

  • Users are reporting that Message notifications that have been marked as read are re-appearing as new. We are aware and investigating the behavior.

My Games & Apps

  • Users have reported seeing black tiles instead of game artwork when browsing their collection.
    • Note: We are still investigating the issue, please report the issue again from the console if you have done so with a prior update and are still seeing this behavior.
  • Some titles in collection may appear with a “trial” tag incorrectly in collection.

Profile Color

  • Sometimes users may encounter the incorrect Profile color when powering on the console.

Make sure to use Report a problem to keep us informed of your issue. We may not be able to respond to everyone, but the data we’ll gather is crucial to finding a resolution.

  News - EVO co-founder/CEO Joey Cuellar removed after sexual abuse allegations

EVO co-founder/CEO Joey Cuellar removed after sexual abuse allegations

This year’s online iteration of in-person fighting game tournament EVO 2020 has been canceled after a number of sexual harassment claims were made against organization co-founder Joey ‘Mr Wizard’ Cuellar, who has since been removed from his role as CEO.

Stories shared online accuse Cuellar, who has been involved with the annual esports series since its inception in 1996, of engaging in sexual misconduct. One person claimed that Cuellar, referred to in their account by his pseudonym ‘Wizard,’ would often bribe “young boys” to take their clothes off and jump in pools.

“He would pay people hundreds of tokens to do things like take off their clothes and jump in the water hazard pools for certain amounts of times. 99 percent of the time, it was young boys,” reads the allegation, posted on Twitter.

Cellular is also alleged to have paid one person, who was 17 years old at the time, $20 to reveal themselves to him in a bathroom in order to settle a bet.

As the allegations began to circulate on social media, a number of high-profile developers and players including NetherRealm, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and five-time Evo champion Dominique ‘SonicFox’ McLean pulled out of the tournament in order to “stand in solidarity with those who have spoken out against abuse.”

Evo responded to the allegations on July 2, explaining that Cuellar had been placed on “administrative leave pending a third party investigation.” Now, just two days later, Cuellar has been removed as CEO and will “no longer be involved with EVO in any capacity.”

“Over the past 24 hours, in response to serious allegations recently made public on Twitter, we have made the first of a series of important decisions regarding the future of our company. Effective immediately, Joey Cuellar will no longer be involved with Evo in any capacity. We are currently working towards his complete separation from the company and have relieved him of all his responsibilities,” reads the latest Evo statement.

“Going forward, Tony Cannon will act as CEO; in this position, he will take a leadership role in prioritizing greater accountability across Evo, both internally and at our events. Progress doesn’t happen overnight, or without the bravery of those who speak up against misconduct and injustice. We are shocked and saddened by these events, but we are listening and committed to making every change that will be necessary in making Evo a better model for the strong, safer culture we all see.

“As a result, we will be canceling Evo Online and will work to issue refunds for all players who chose to purchase a badge. We will donate the equivalent of the proceeds as promised to Project HOPE.”

As for Cuellar, he appears to have acknowledged the allegations in a short tweet. “I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt anyone,” he wrote. “I was young and reckless and did things I’m not proud of. I have been growing and maturing over the past 20 years, but that doesn’t excuse anything. All I have been trying to do is become a better person. Once again, I’m truly sorry.”

These allegations are the latest in a growing number against those in positions of power within the games industry. Dying Light 2 writer Chris Avellone was recently accused of sexual harassment and assault, while a huge number of people have lambasted Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft for enabling a toxic culture that protects and emboldens abusers — many of whom held high-level positions at the company.
