<p>Since Nintendo released its latest financial results, we’ve been hearing <em>a lot</em> about <strong><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nintendo-switch/animal_crossing_new_horizons">Animal Crossing: New Horizons</a></strong> sales. It’s <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/08/animal_crossing_new_horizons_has_sold_over_22_million_copies">now sold over 22 million copies worldwide</a> which means it has sold <a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/08/animal_crossing_new_horizons_has_sold_more_copies_than_the_entire_metroid_franchise">more copies than the entire Metroid franchise</a>.</p>
<p>If this wasn’t already enough proof of just how <em>big</em> Nintendo’s life sim series has become over the years, Game Data Library has crunched some numbers – revealing the most recent entry is now the second best-selling video game <em>ever</em> within Japan.</p>
<p>The only game ahead of it is the original <strong><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/gameboy/pokemon_red_and_blue">Pokémon</a></strong> title on Game Boy, which has shifted a <em>whopping</em> 10,230,000 units (mind you, that’s the combined total of Red, Green and Blue). Technically this means Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the best-selling single SKU in Japan – putting it ahead of the original <strong><a href="https://www.nintendolife.com/games/nes/super_mario_bros">Super Mario Bros.</a></strong> game in four months.</p>
<p>Here’s the full list of the top 20 best-selling video games in Japan of all-time, courtesy of <a class="external" href="https://nintendoeverything.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-now-the-second-best-selling-game-ever-in-japan-best-selling-single-sku/">Nintendo Everything</a>:</p>
