Another New Fortnite Season 6 Skin Teaser Shared By Epic

The release of Season 6 of Fortnite: Battle Royale is almost here. The new season of the massively popular battle royale game starts this Thursday on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile. Excitement for the launch is already high, and developer Epic Games is continuing to build on that by sharing more teaser images of what's to come--here's the latest.

The first teaser, which dropped on Monday, gave us a look at a strange llama DJ--presumably one of the cosmetics players will be able to get their hands on during Season 6. Tuesday's teaser continues that trend, showing off an outlaw outfit that you'll likely be able to obtain during the new season. Like the first image, this one is also set against the infamous purple cube that recently plunged into Loot Lake.

No Caption Provided

Whereas previous seasons of Fortnite have adhered to a general theme--Season 4, for instance, was loosely themed around movies--the purple cube seems to be the unifying element of Season 6. The mysterious object has been the subject of much intrigue since it first appeared on the island in August, following a massive lightning storm. Soon after it materialized, it began slowly rolling around the map until it ultimately sank in Loot Lake.

It's still unclear what this development portends for Season 6, but it had an immediate effect on the environment. After plunging in, the entire lake turned purple and took on the same characteristics as the cube, propelling players into the air when they came in contact with the surface.

Epic continually refreshes various aspects of Fortnite's map with each season, so there will almost certainly be more changes in store for the island once Season 6 rolls around. The new season begins on all platforms this Thursday, September 27.

Archiving Will Wright’s early design notes for The Sims

The Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, New York is home to a massive archive of video game history including design documents and sketches from The Sims creator Will Wright, offering a glimpse into the early stages of creating a long-standing franchise.

Museum director Jon-Paul Dyson and archivist Julia Novakovic spoke with Game Informer recently to showcase Wright’s design notebook, providing commentary for certain pages and giving context to why his notes are so important to gaming’s history.

“The interesting thing that you see with Will, with these notebooks, is that he’s all over the place,” Dyson points out.

“You might have some snatches of code, there are random lists of things, there are schematic diagrams…”

“You’re seeing just specific key words that he’s going to use for programming, maybe some ideas for verbs or characteristics of things, and then you’ll also see his grocery list,” Novakovic adds.

“They’re not systematic,” he explains, pointing to a section labeled Lessons, implying that this portion of the notebook may have been a post-mortem. “He might jump back and forth between journals.”

Dyson also talks a little about the importance of archiving design notebooks like Wright’s, noting that the preservation of these materials is crucial when looking back at how popular games were conceived.

The full interview goes into more detail about Wright’s notebook and The Sims, be sure to watch the entire video over at Game Informer

Video: Psychosis and the making of Hellblade

In this GDC 2018 talk, Ninja Theory’s Dominic Matthews and Tameem Antoniades discuss the delivery of the mental health themes in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, with a particular focus on the team’s approach to researching and collaborating around the subject of psychosis.

The two go over how a small team of 20 delivered a triple-A quality game striving to push the boundaries of narrative within gaming, especially when it came to the delivery of mental health themes in order to deliver a compelling and thoughtful depiction.

It’s an insightful talk that’s definitely worth watching, so developers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to do so now that it’s freely available on the official GDC YouTube channel

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its accompanying YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Mobile - The Best Word Games Apps on iOS and Android

The Best Word Games Apps on iOS and Android

Like puzzle games, word games are synonymous with ‘gaming on the go.’ They are often designed with a life on the move in mind. Any given round of word finding, or letter stacking can last just long enough to span the wait for a morning coffee. This sort of quick convenience has led to a devaluation of word games. We don’t respect them like we should. We are wrong.

Want to check out some non-word puzzle games? We’ve got you covered!

There are some incredible word games available in the palms of our hands, but with the massive crush of content that hits the App Store and Google Play store every day, it’s very difficult to find them. Fret no longer, we’ve curated a list of the must play word games available to mobile platforms, so you don’t have to.

Developer: Fowers Games
Platforms:  iOS Universal, Android
Price: $4.99

Hardback best wrod games

This deck-building word game would feel just at home on our list of best card games as it would here, but since Hardback’s central twist is that cards are only playable in a Scrabble-esque system of dictionary-friendly sets, we feel it’s apt to list is here. The sequel to 2016’s Paperback, the key thing to remember about this game is that you can’t play it as ‘just’ a word game.

The beauty of Hardback is that you’re not just out to score long, multi-lettered words, you’re out to play cards that combo well together to acheive high scores. This can be as simple as collecting a great set of cards that just say ‘OFF’, or indeed bagging a great collection for a longer word. The limitations to playing cards as words adds a challenging yet interesting twist to a classic game-type. Main changes over the first iteration include tweaks to Wild Cards, Special Abilities and additional card draw.

Supertype

Developer: Philipp Stollenmayer
Platforms:  iOS, Android
Price: $1.99

SupertypeWG

We get accustomed to the sort of word games that have us finding and planted letters to make words. If we’re feeling particularly creative, we find word games that are just complex versions of word finds or crosswords set in some other sort of puzzle motif. In Supertype, words are tools. After typing a word, the letters fall through the obstacle course below, the goal being to find the right letters to roll or slide through the right nooks and crannies in order to burst the target dots below. On harder puzzles, making sure your word has skinny enough letters in the right places is key to shimmying into victory.

Wordgraphy

Developer: Alper Iskender
Platforms: iOS
Price: Free with IAPs

WordgraphyWG

Wordgraphy takes the old trope of unscrambling arrays of letters to make new words and crosses it with some Sudoku elements. Words line the outside of the table, and letters can only be switched with letters in the same position as other letter groups on each side. For example, the second letter in a five letter array at the top of the square board can only be swapped with the second letter of another of the other for arrays lining the other side. The result is a clever word construction gimmick that keeps you guessing and tests the depth of your own vocabulary very quickly.

BAIKOH

Developer: Mum Not Proud
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: Free with IAPs

BAIKOHWG

Take the pressure of a gradually filling space that has to be emptied by you, the intrepid player, a la Tetris. Combine the added bonus stress of each falling piece being a letter that needs to be used to create words as fast as you can. Then sprinkle on top a narrator that has an aggressive ire towards you, and you have all the ingredients for BAIKOH. Falling letters can come with added attributes as well, like frozen ones that will gradually freeze other letters, making them harder to remove. Unlockable badges can help even out the playing field, but this is a hard game meant to push your reflexes and critical thinking skills to the limit and break them on rapid occasion.

Sidewords

Developer: Milkbag Games
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: $2.99

SlidewordsWG

Taking words and making other words out of them is nothing new in the genre, but Sidewords commands a new, brain-bending approach to the concept. On the top and to the left of a grid are two words. The size of those words determines the size of the grid, which each letter creating a row or column. Using the letters of the two words, you must make new words of course. But the twist is that the words you make take up the spots on the grid where those letters intersect. You have to fill the whole grid with words to move on, so using a lot of letters to make a word can take up a lot of real estate in the grid, making it hard to create words with the scraps. Strategy and spatial awareness are key.

Spelltower

Developer: Zach Gage
Platforms:  iOS
Price: $2.99

SpelltowerWG

Before Zach Gage was upending billiards, he was setting the word game world one fire with entries like Spelltower. Take your average Sunday paper word finding puzzle and add that block-crushing Tetris mechanic that we all know and lover. New letters file in from the bottom, and you must find words with adjacent letters to removed them from the ever growing pile. Different game modes alter the many mechanics at play, including a clever multiplayer mode that burdens your opponent with your current tower of words when you score.

Puzzlejuice

Developer: Sirvo LLC
Platforms: iOS
Price: $1.99

PuzzlejuiceWG

A brainchild from Asher Vollmer, of Threes! fame, Puzzlejuice takes the best parts of Boggle and Tetris and slaps them together to make something that is much more challenging than the sum of its parts. Colorful shapes drop into the field like Tetris, and as you form lines or match colors, they turn into letters. To remove the blocks, you must turn those letters into words. There’s a lot going on at once, and as difficulties unlock, and different play modes open up, this becomes one of the most brain-turning games on the App store.

TypeShift

Developer: Zach Gage
Platforms:  iOS, Android
Price: Free with IAP

TypeShiftWG

Another Zach Gage joint, TypeShift focuses on redesigning the good old crossword puzzle. Columns of letters can be slid back and forth to create a series of words among them on a central row. Every time a letter is used in a word, they turn green. You pass the stage when all of the available letters are turned green. Sounds easy enough, but of course it’s not. Other modes, like Clue Mode, bring it further in line with the traditional crossword.  Either way, a few rounds of it, and you’ll be scratching your head in the best possible way.

What would your list of the best word-puzzle games look like? Let us know in the comments!

Last Chance To Get GameStop's Video Game Deals This Week (US Only)

GameStop refreshes its weekly selection of gaming deals each Wednesday, which means today is your last chance to get this week's deals. Now is a good time to buy, considering we're moving inexorably toward the deluge of games releasing this fall. Let's take a look at what kind of money GameStop shoppers can save this week.

Sony just announced the PlayStation Classic, a miniature version of the original PlayStation console that comes with 20 PS1 games pre-loaded. As for this week's game discounts, you can get a number of Ubisoft titles for cheap, like The Crew 2 and Far Cry 5 for $35 each, or Assassin's Creed Origins for $30. Shooter fans can pick up Call of Duty games on sale, including WWII Gold Edition for $40. Overwatch is down to $30 right now, as is the 3DS RPG Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology.

As usual, a number of trade-in and pre-owned deals are available this week as well. Trade in any game on this list toward a new game, and you'll get $20 credit guaranteed. You can also buy a pre-owned Xbox One and two games under $15 for just $210, or get the same deal for a PS4 for $270.

Getting ready to celebrate the first birthday of Fortnite Battle Royale, our very own Larry Hryb sat down with Nathan Mooney from Epic Games to look back on the year that was. Soon, developers will be able to build mouse and keyboard support in their games if and how they choose — entirely at their discretion — and Xbox will support them in creating the right experience for their games to ensure an optimal and fair gaming experience. Warframe will be one of the first titles testing mouse and keyboard input when the feature arrives to Insider. We also announced that we’re partnering with Razer, a premiere peripheral manufacturer in the gaming hardware space, to bring you the best possible mouse and keyboard experience for this new functionality. We’ll have more details to share on mouse and keyboard support during our November episode of Inside Xbox.

Reach Out Worldwide Charity

Last year, Xbox teamed up with Cody Walker for Game4Paul3 and helped raise over a $150,000 for Reach Out World Wide. We’re getting everyone back together this year for another big charity stream, and we could not be more excited about this event. Catch the Game4Paul4 live stream on October 11.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider DLC Reveal

Shadow of the Tomb Raider may be the conclusion of the new Lara Croft trilogy, but there’s still plenty do to after the credits roll. In fact, seven-months-worth of tombs to explore. Larry raided Rich Brigg’s brain-space from Crystal Dynamics for an exclusive look at the first DLC coming this October on this episode of Inside Xbox.

The Forza Horizon 4 Seasons Simulator

We looked at the one-of-a-kind Forza Horizon 4 Seasons Simulator. The 360-degree booth is designed to mimic the changing seasons in Forza Horizon 4 where celebrities had to endure rain, snow, heat, and mud while they play the game on Xbox One X. Check out these stars battling all the elements on Inside Xbox.

Hollow Knight Interview

Hollow Knight is an incredible indie platformer that’s full of style and mystery, and it’s available on Xbox One right now. The Voidheart Edition on Xbox One means you get all the DLC included for free and is currently 20% for a limited time until October 2. Learn about this modern classic here on the show.

A Closer Look at the Forza Horizon 4 cover car: the McLaren Senna

Only 500 of these high-performance machines were made — and they’re completely sold out. The last one was auctioned off for close to three million dollars and Justine got to check out the cover vehicle for Forza Horizon 4 with Tanner Foust to find out why they’re so coveted.

McLaren Senna Stunt

Inspired by the cover car and spectacular showcase events in Forza Horizon 4, we staged an unprecedented head-to-head race at one of the world’s most iconic motor racing venues. The race saw a McLaren Senna take on the bikes in a straight fight to the top of the Goodwood Estate’s world-famous Hill Climb. And despite the bikes’ unconventionally direct route up the hill, including a few jaw-dropping jumps and tricks, the Senna’s incredible speed and power won out in the end.

Thanks to everyone who tuned in! We hope you enjoyed the show and we can’t wait to tell you all about next month’s episode in a few weeks.
