Dota 2 Update – June 8th, 2018

In the first 30 hours since recalibration, the matchmaker was overly sensitive on wins and losses and it resulted in players calibrating with bigger gains and losses than intended. We are processing all matches again and will be correcting the rank gains and losses throughout the day. Medals will be appear as undefined for a bit during this process.

Unravel Two Creative Director Explains Why The Game Isn’t On Switch

During the EA Play conference a couple of days ago, one of the stand-out games was undoubtedly Unravel Two – a sequel to 2016’s Unravel which launched immediately after the show on other platforms. The co-op platforming nature of the game, the cuddly and adorable aesthetic, and the fact that the two characters are the exact same colours as the Joy-Con controllers had Switch owners wondering why Nintendo’s console had been left out.

The Creative Director of Coldwood Interactive, Martin Sahlin (the man who passionately presented the new game on stage at E3), is aware of the comments surrounding this question and has addressed the issue via Twitter. Apparently, the game’s absence is not one that the studio wanted, but rather a result of a lack of resources thanks to its relatively small size.

Sahlin goes on to say that the studio hasn’t given up hope on bringing the game to Switch, and if a way to do so presents itself, it could well become a reality.

Questions will once again be asked of EA – the publisher behind the Unravel series – as a lack of resources and funding within Coldwood Interactive could easily be supported by the company if it saw a Switch port as being worthwhile. After recent comments from the game’s producer stating that Madden 19 won’t appear on Switch because it’s “what’s best” for the game, and this lack of desire to fund a seemingly perfect fit for the console in Unravel Two, it seems EA is still strangely hesitant to support Nintendo’s system.

Would you like to see Unravel Two arrive on Switch? Do you think EA is missing a trick by ignoring the system all too often? Let us know your thoughts below.

News - Fallout 76 Release Date / Pre-Order Guide For The US (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Fallout 76 Release Date / Pre-Order Guide For The US (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

For anyone wondering when we'll get to return to the wasteland after 2015's Fallout 4, Bethesda has answered that question with a teaser trailer for the next entry: Fallout 76. The game has been confirmed for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It appeared during Bethesda's presentation at E3 2018, where we learned a ton--including the fact that it's an online, multiplayer-enabled game. We also got a release date: November 14, 2018.

The game puts you in the shoes of a person who resided in Vault 76. Base-building returns from Fallout 4, and players can hunt down items that will allow them to fire nuclear missiles at areas of the map. The game is said to be four times bigger than its predecessor. We've got a complete roundup of all the Fallout 76 details.

Whether you're a diehard fan of the series or you want to see what all the hype is about, you might be ready to lock in your Fallout 76 pre-order. If so, we have all the information you need below.

Pre-order bonus

A pre-launch beta for Fallout 76 has been announced. We don't yet know all the ways access will be granted, but pre-ordering (at least from select retailers) will guarantee you get in. A beta release date has not yet been announced.

Standard Edition

Suggested retail price: $60

The standard edition of Fallout 76 comes with just the base game but is already available to pre-order.

Tricentennial Edition

No Caption Provided

Suggested retail price: $80

One step above the standard edition is the Deluxe edition, also known as the Tricentennial edition. You get the base game along with a variety of in-game bonus items. That includes the following goodies:

  • Tricentennial Power Armor Customization for the T-51, T-45, T-60, and X-01 Power Armors
  • Tricentennial Weapon Customization for the 10MM Pistol, Hatchet, and Laser Rifle
  • Spectacularly Handsome Vault Boy Mascot Head
  • Patriotic Uncle Sam Outfit
  • Celebratory Vault Boy Saluting Emote
  • First-Class Tricentennial Workshop Posters
  • Tricentennial Commemorative Photo Frame

Provided you're interested in those bonuses, you can pre-order this version from select retailers through the links below.

Power Edition

Suggested retail price: $200

Those willing to spend more can get a much grander package. In addition to a copy of Fallout 76 itself, the Power Edition gets you a ton of extras, the centerpiece of which is a T-51 Power Armor helmet. This is actually wearable and is equipped with a voice modulator speaker and a working headlamp. This comes with a West Tek canvas carrying bag.

Also included is a map showing Fallout 76's world. This measures 21 inches by 21 inches and glows in the dark. Additionally, there are 24 figurines based on in-game models (covering likes like creatures and vault dwellers), a steelbook, and bonus in-game items (outlined with the Deluxe edition).

How to Install and Use Flatpak on Linux
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 06-11-2018, 09:25 AM - Forum: Linux, FreeBSD, and Unix types - No Replies

How to Install and Use Flatpak on Linux

The landscape of applications is quickly changing. Many platforms are migrating to containerized applications… and with good cause. An application wrapped in a bundled container is easier to install, includes all the necessary dependencies, doesn’t directly affect the hosting platform libraries, automatically updates (in some cases), and (in most cases) is more secure than a standard application. Another benefit of these containerized applications is that they are universal (i.e., such an application would install on Ubuntu Linux or Fedora Linux, without having to convert a .deb package to an .rpm).

As of now, there are two main universal package systems: Snap and Flatpak. Both function in similar fashion, but one is found by default on Ubuntu-based systems (Snap) and one on Fedora-based systems (Flatpak). It should come as no surprise that both can be installed on either type of system. So if you want to run Snaps on Fedora, you can. If you want to run Flatpak on Ubuntu, you can.

I will walk you through the process of installing and using Flatpak on Ubuntu 18.04. If your platform of choice is Fedora (or a Fedora derivative), you can skip the installation process.

Installation

The first thing to do is install Flatpak. The process is simple. Open up a terminal window and follow these steps:

  1. Add the necessary repository with the command sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexlarsson/flatpak.

  2. Update apt with the command sudo apt update.

  3. Install Flatpak with the command sudo apt install flatpak.

  4. Install Flatpak support for GNOME Software with the command sudo apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak.

  5. Reboot your system.

Usage

I’ll first show you how to install a Flatpak package from the command line, and then via the GUI. Let’s say you want to install the Spotify desktop client via Flatpak. To do this, you must first instruct Flatpak to retrieve the necessary app. The Spotify Flatpak (along with others) is hosted on Flathub. The first thing we’re going to do is add the Flathub remote repository with the following command:

sudo flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Now you can install any Flatpak app found on Flathub. For example, to install Spotify, the command would be:

sudo flatpak install flathub com.spotify.Client

To find out the exact command for each install, you only have to visit the app’s page on Flathub and the installation command is listed beneath the description.

Running a Flatpak-installed app is a bit different than a standard app (at least from the command line). Head back to the terminal window and issue the command:

flatpak run com.spotify.Client

Of course, after you’ve re-started your machine (upon installing the GNOME Software Support), those apps should appear in your desktop menu, making it unnecessary to start them from the command line.

To uninstall a Flatpak from the command line, you would go back to the terminal and issue the command:

sudo flatpak uninstall NAME

where NAME is the name of the app to remove. In our Spotify case, that would be:

sudo flatpak uninstall com.spotify.Client

Now we want to update our Flatpak apps. To do this, first list all of your installed Flatpak apps by issuing the command:

flatpak list

Now that we have our list of apps (Figure 1), we can update with the command sudo flatpak update NAME (where NAME is the name of our app to update).

So if we want to update GIMP, we’d issue the command:

sudo flatpak update org.gimp.GIMP

If there are any updates to be applied, they’’ll be taken care of. If there are no updates to be applied, nothing will be reported.

Installing from GNOME Software

Let’s make this even easier. Since we installed GNOME Software support for flatpak, we don’t actually have to bother with the command line. Don’t be mistaken, unlike Snap support, you won’t actually find Flatpak apps listed within GNOME Software (even though we’ve installed Software support). Instead, you’ll find support through the web browser.

Let me show you. Point your browser to Flathub.

Let’s say you want to install Slack via Flatpak. Go to the Slack Flathub page and then click on the INSTALL button. Since we installed GNOME Software support, the standard browser dialog window will appear with an included option to open the file via Software Install (Figure 2).

This action will then open GNOME Software (or, in the case of Ubuntu, Ubuntu Software), where you can click the Install button (Figure 3) to complete the process.

Once the installation completes, you can then either click the Launch button, or close GNOME Software and launch the application from the desktop menu (in the case of GNOME, the Dash).

After you’ve installed a Flatpak app via GNOME Software, it can also be removed from the same system (so there’s still not need to go through the command line).

What about KDE?

If you prefer using the KDE desktop environment, you’re in luck. If you issue the command sudo apt install plasma-discover-flatpak-backend, it’ll install Flatpak support for the KDE app store, Discover. Once you’ve added Flatpak support, you then need to add a repository. Open Discover and then click on Settings. In the settings window, you’ll now see a Flatpak listing (Figure 4).

Click on the Flatpak drop-down and then click Add Flathub. Click on the Applications tab (in the left navigation) and you can then search for (and install) any applications found on Flathub (Figure 5).

Easy Flatpak management

And that’s the gist of using Flatpak. These universal packages can be used on most Linux distributions and can even be managed via the GUI on some desktop environments. I highly recommend you give Flatpak a try. With the combination of standard installation, Flatpak, and Snaps, you’ll find software management on Linux has become incredibly easy.

E3 2018: EA Play's Press Conference Shows The Loot Box Backlash Paid Off

If you needed further reassurance that EA has received the message about loot boxes loud and clear, its E3 2018 press conference was it. During the 80-minute stream, various developers highlighted the fact that monetisation would take a back seat to user-experience in its biggest upcoming games, and that gameplay progression won't be impacted by money you sink into their games. The black eye it got after the Star Wars Battlefront II backlash still stings a little, no doubt.

Perhaps the clearest indication of its about-face on loot boxes came, aptly, from Star Wars Battlefront II design director Dennis Brannvall, who appeared on stage to reveal new content coming to the game. He opened, however, with a mea culpa that felt sincere, mostly thanks to the steps the studio has already taken to uncouple progression from microtransactions and the removal of loot boxes.

No Caption Provided

"We launched our game in November of last year and clearly we didn't get it quite right," he admitted. "Instead of coming out of the gate and sprinting like we really wanted to, we had to take a step back and make sure that we were delivering a game that players really wanted."

That moment of clarity, it seems, has disseminated throughout EA's studios, and its press conference was very much a platform to assuage fears that Battlefield V and Anthem, two of the publisher's biggest upcoming titles with the biggest potential audiences, would fall prey to questionable business practices once again.

EA opened its press conference with Battlefield V, its flagship first-person shooter. It discussed new gameplay changes coming to the series, talked about various modes that will be available and, perhaps most importantly, outright stated there will be no in-game monetisation.

"We will all go on an expanding journey through the second world war … No lootboxes. No Premium Pass," said Oscar Gabrielson. This is a particularly big moment as the last few Battlefield games have monetised maps and expansions post-release and presented them through the Premium Pass. Traditional thinking was that this strategy would allow developers and publishers to keep the attention of its audience while also generating further revenue from their products.

The fact that Battlefield has essentially committed to free post-release content for the life of the game shows that EA has reordered its priorities. Business considerations are now below ensuring that its community of players have a valuable, frictionless experience. Excitingly, developer DICE confirmed that a battle royale mode will be coming to Battlefield V, and players will likely be able to get it at no cost.

The biggest concern among fans was whether this new strategy would also apply to BioWare's Anthem. The game, an online, multiplayer experience that has been likened to Bungie's Destiny, is fertile ground for loot boxes and microtransactions. Furthermore, gameplay systems such as customisation, unique weapons, and powers are ideal for hooking people in and making them spend real-world cash for the chance to get something useful or pay to get ahead.

Thankfully, Anthem's developers very deliberately distanced themselves from randomised lootboxes.

"We really wanted players to express themselves both through customising the way their Javelin plays through gear and weapons, but also the way it looks through paint jobs and also changing the actual geometry of the suit itself," explained executive producer Mark Darrah.

[There will be] no ability to pay for gameplay advantage in Anthem.

Mark Darrah, Executive Producer of Anthem

"We are going to have some cosmetics and vanity items that you're going to be able to purchase, but you're always going to know what you're going to buy before you spend any money on it. So no loot boxes and no ability to pay for power. That means no ability to pay for gameplay advantage in Anthem.

This will no doubt be comforting to those interested in Anthem, especially the ones that spotted the Mass Effect-themed Javelin skin during the presentation.

Whether this new reluctance towards random loot boxes and microtransactions remains long-term is unknown, but EA has recognised that it has a lot of goodwill to build after the Star Wars Battlefront II debacle. At the very least, we can rest easy knowing that Battlefield V and Anthem, two of the most exciting upcoming games, won't be reaching into our pockets at every given opportunity.
