  [Tut] Python delattr()
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 12-25-2020, 09:06 PM - Forum: Python - No Replies

Python delattr()

Python’s built-in delattr() function takes an object and an attribute name as arguments and removes the attribute from the object. The call delattr(object, 'attribute') is semantically identical to del object.attribute.

This article shows you how to use Python’s built-in delattr() function.

Usage

Learn by example! Here’s an example on how to use the delattr() built-in function.

Create a Car object with one attribute speed.

# Define class with one attribute
class Car: def __init__(self): self.speed = 100 # Create object
porsche = Car()

Print the attribute speed:

# What's the value for attribute speed?
print(porsche.speed)
# 100

Use delattr(porsche, speed) to remove the attribute speed from the object porsche.

# Remove the attribute speed from porsche
delattr(porsche, 'speed')

After removing the attribute, it cannot be accessed anymore:

# Does this still work?
print(porsche.speed)
# No: '''
Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\xcent\Desktop\Finxter\Blog\HowToConvertBooleanToStringPython\code.py", line 18, in <module> print(porsche.speed)
AttributeError: 'Car' object has no attribute 'speed' '''

Syntax delattr()

The delattr() object has the following syntax:

Syntax:
delattr(object, attribute) # Removes attribute from object

Arguments object The object from which the attribute should be removed
string The attribute to be removed
Return Value None Returns Nothing. If the attribute doesn’t exist, the method does nothing.

Interactive Shell Exercise: Understanding delattr()

Consider the following interactive code:

Exercise: Does the code work? If yes, run it! If not, fix the bug!

But before we move on, I’m excited to present you my brand-new Python book Python One-Liners (Amazon Link).

If you like one-liners, you’ll LOVE the book. It’ll teach you everything there is to know about a single line of Python code. But it’s also an introduction to computer science, data science, machine learning, and algorithms. The universe in a single line of Python!

The book is released in 2020 with the world-class programming book publisher NoStarch Press (San Francisco).

Python del vs delattr()

The alternative to Python’s built-in delattr() is to use the del keyword that is also built-in.

The delattr(object, 'attribute') is semantically identical to the del object.attribute call. Note that in the first case, the attribute is given as a string, while in the second case, the attribute is given as a normal attribute name.

# Define class with one attribute
class Car: def __init__(self): self.speed = 100 # Create object
porsche = Car() # What's the value for attribute speed?
print(porsche.speed) # Remove the attribute speed from porsche
del porsche.speed # Does this still work?
print(porsche.speed)

The output is the same:

100
Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Users\xcent\Desktop\Finxter\Blog\HowToConvertBooleanToStringPython\code.py", line 17, in <module> print(porsche.speed)
AttributeError: 'Car' object has no attribute 'speed'

Related Functions

  • The getattr() function returns the value of an attribute.
  • The hasattr() function checks if an attribute exists.
  • The setattr() function sets the value of an attribute.

Summary

Python’s built-in delattr() function takes an object and an attribute name as arguments and removes the attribute from the object.

Feature: Nintendo Life’s Switch Game Of The Year 2020

Nintendo Life Staff Game Of The Year 2020

As 2020 draws to a close (finally!) and the fresh-faced 2021 peeks at us from over the horizon, it’s time to look back at the best Switch games to release over the past 360-odd days.

In what ended up being an extremely tough year for many people, there were positives to be found — at least in the field of video games! A release schedule that at the start of the year was essentially Animal Crossing and a bunch of blank spaces belied a host of top-quality games that were released within a matter of weeks after their surprise announcement.

But which were the absolute best games of 2020? Well, we’ve asked you that very question and tomorrow we’ll publish the top 50 picks according to Nintendo Life readers. Today, however, we of Team Nintendo Life shall be sharing our picks of the best Switch games of 2020. It wasn’t easy — the shortlist we drew up certainly wasn’t very short! — but after each nominating our personal top 10s with points assigned, we’ve whittled down the following ten Switch games that cumulatively represent our absolute favourites of 2020.

As for the reader-voted Switch GOTY 2020 list, there’s still time to squeeze in ratings before publication tomorrow, although remember that as with our other reader-ranked lists you’ll also be able to rate your favourites and influence that ranking after it goes live, too — perhaps the perfect activity for sitting on the sofa of a Christmas Day afternoon, bloated with turkey and regret.

The one below, though? This one’s set in stone eternally. Let’s take a look at NL staff’s top 10 Switch games of 2020…

Two Point Hospital (Switch)Two Point Hospital (Switch)

Publisher: SEGA / Developer: Two Point Studios

Release Date: 25th Feb 2020 (USA) / 25th Feb 2020 (UK/EU)

Just sneaking into the top ten thanks to very enthusiastic voting from two team members, Two Point Hospital is one of the Switch games this year we’ve had the most fun with. It’s a great port which loses nothing in the transition to Nintendo’s console and captures the zany spirit of Bullfrog’s Theme Hospital. Other games had us pondering the existential abyss Werner Herzog-style, or weeping as we took a deeply emotional journey — Two Point Hospital gave us a very welcome shot of pure fun and comedy.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Switch)Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Switch)

Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Koei Tecmo

Release Date: 20th Nov 2020 (USA) / 20th Nov 2020 (UK/EU)

In a year when we’re eager to both escape to a kingdom filled with natural wonder and beauty and also channel our impotent rage into giving hordes of ne’er-do-wells a thrashing with the Master Sword, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity managed to hit two birds with one stone. It may stumble performance-wise but that never got in the way of our enjoyment of this prequel/side-story Zelda title and its blend of Dynasty Warriors hack-and-slash action with the characters and kingdom from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A satisfying and irresistible aperitif while we await the full Breath of the Wild sequel which, we hope to hear more about in the coming year.

A Short Hike (Switch eShop)A Short Hike (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Whippoorwill / Developer: Adam Robinson-Yu

Release Date: 18th Aug 2020 (USA) / 18th Aug 2020 (UK/EU)

A Short Hike offered a beautifully brief respite from everything else in our sizeable backlogs. Combining the charm of an Animal Crossing with the explorative spirit of a bite-sized Breath of the Wild (not to mention a dollop of 32-bit nostalgia with its visual-style), there was much left to do after you’d scaled the mountain, but developer Adam Robinson-Yu produced a feel-good mini masterpiece that came along at just the right time. One of the finest indie games of the year, or any year, and thoroughly deserving of the 10/10 we awarded it.

Super Mario Bros. 35 (Switch eShop)Super Mario Bros. 35 (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo

Release Date: 1st Oct 2020 (USA) / 1st Oct 2020 (UK/EU)

“It’s Tetris 99, but with Mario.”

We imagine the pitch for Super Mario Bros. 35 was a short one, but the fact that everything hangs together so well belies the complexity of design and the thought that’s gone into this online multiplayer take on the granddaddy of platform games. For Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, Super Mario Bros. 35 is a timely and fitting tribute to the plumber’s legacy. The worst thing we can say is that we’re disappointed that Nintendo plans to shutter servers on 31st March 2021 (presumably to make way for ‘The Legend of Zelda 35’ or something like that). Then again, perhaps its fleeting nature makes us savour it all the more…

Only joking. Leave it up, Nintendo. You know it makes sense.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps (Switch eShop)Ori and the Will of the Wisps (Switch eShop)

Publisher: iam8bit / Developer: Moon Studios

Release Date: 17th Sep 2020 (USA) / 17th Sep 2020 (UK/EU)

Our hearts might belong to Nintendo, but we’re avid fans of video games regardless of their home platforms and while we loved Ori and the Will of the Wisps on XBox One, the chances of it following its predecessor to Switch seemed exceedingly unlikely to us. 2D Metroidvanias might be ten-a-penny on Switch, but this one does things on a technical level which put it seemingly out of reach of Switch’s comparatively modest specs.

And yet it came. Moon Studios went above and beyond to get this running at 60fps on Nintendo’s console, and the fact that it doesn’t feel like a truncated or compromised version in the slightest is testament to the developer’s skill and desire to reach as large an audience as possible with this gorgeous game. Play it.

Smash-Like Brawler Indie Pogo Is Coming To Switch With All DLC Included

Platform brawler Indie Pogo is heading to Nintendo Switch early next year, it’s been confirmed. The news arrives alongside a very timely new character reveal in the shape of Super Meat Boy Forever‘s Meat Boy.

The game is a Smash-like arena fighter for one-to-four players which stars a number of indie favourite fighters, with characters from the likes of Enter The Gungeon, Shovel Knight, Downwell, and Bit.Trip all appearing. It has a focus on “free-flowing aerial combat” and first launched on Steam back in 2018.

The Switch version will contain all previously released content, including all DLC, and will also receive all upcoming DLC packs which are set to include Octodad, Gunvolt from the Azure Striker: Gunvolt series, Dust from Dust: An Elysian Tail, and a fighter from Awesomenauts.

Meat Boy arrives in a new content pack that will launch in January 2021; he’ll be free for all players and comes with a new stage based on the Abandoned Hospital setting, where Super Meat Boy boss C.H.A.D will be making an appearance. The update will also add a single-player arcade mode, new trophies to unlock, and other quality-of-life improvements.

Meat Boy comes to Indie Pogo just as Super Meat Boy Forever launches on Switch

Yes, KFC's Game Console Is Real, And It Has A Chicken Warmer

KFC has become something of a meme factory over the last few years, with different celebrities playing Colonel Sanders in commercials and Mario Lopez even starring as the long-dead founder in a short romance film for Lifetime. We saw teases on the KFC Gaming Twitter account of a KFC-branded game console for months, and we assumed it was all a joke. Well, it wasn't. The KFConsole is real, and it keeps your chicken warm.

Intel's Mark Walton clarified that the console is legitimate on Twitter, saying it's powered by Intel. Other game consoles are generally powered by AMD processors.

The Cooler Master page provides more information on the system, saying it's capable of 4K resolution and 240fps gameplay. We can't imagine that's for graphically demanding games, but it's impressive nonetheless. Cooler Master primarily focuses on custom PC builds, but this is pretty different from anything else the company has done.

Xbox Wire - Big ‘80s Action with a Huge World of Tanks Update
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 12-25-2020, 01:26 PM - Forum: Xbox Discussion - No Replies

Big ‘80s Action with a Huge World of Tanks Update

Summary

  • This December brings the most expansive update to World of Tanks Console yet, including a complete refresh of the game’s interface and user experience and a new season of content: the World of Tanks: Action Heroes season.
  • At the heart of the Action Heroes season are three new tanks for players to acquire, each under the command of a 1980s action hero: Rambo (from “First Blood”), Snake Plissken (from “Escape From New York”), and Colonel James Braddock (from “Missing in Action”).
  • This update will also completely revamp the game’s look and feel and improve the key systems that players use to make their tanks more powerful on the battlefield.

As members of the team behind World of Tanks Console, we don’t believe there is such a thing as “too big.” Heck, World of Tanks features 40-ton steel beasts decimating each other in explosive battlefield matches.

So, when we say that our December update is big, we mean it. And it all starts with the biggest action heroes in the world attached to our latest season of content: World of Tanks: Action Heroes!

Like our previous seasons, World of Tanks: Action Heroes gives you the chance to rise through a total of 100 Levels by earning XP in multiplayer battles. Reaching new Levels will grant you all sorts of in-game rewards, including silver, consumables, and special emblems to use when customizing your tanks. Want even more content? You can grab a Season Pass or Ultimate Pass from the Store to unlock sweet rewards every Level!

But we know what tankers truly want: New tanks. This season, you’ll get the opportunity to own tanks under the command of some of the biggest names from classic action movies.

That’s right, World of Tanks: Action Heroes is bringing three 1980s action movie characters straight to our battlefield: John Rambo from “First Blood,” “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” and “Rambo III;” Snake Plissken from “Escape From New York;” and Colonel James Braddock, made famous by Chuck Norris in “Missing in Action.”

Each action hero will be in command of his own uniquely designed limited-edition tank, available only during the World of Tanks Action Heroes season.

John Rambo will be in charge of the distinctly American Concept 1B tank.

World of Tanks Action Heroes

Snake Plissken will command the lethal Object 268 Version V.

World of Tanks Action Heroes

And none other than the legendary James Braddock will call the shots in the legendary Strv K.

World of Tanks Action Heroes

Don’t forget: these three mega-action tanks are available only through the World of Tanks Action Heroes season. Once the season ends in February, these heroes are leaving the battlefield behind!

In case the Action Heroes season wasn’t big enough, we’re also launching the most massive overhaul to the look and feel of World of Tanks that we’ve undertaken yet. On December 8, you’ll see a brand-new user interface that’s cleaner, meaner, and easier to navigate to make sure you get the most out of your time on the battlefield.

World of Tanks Action Heroes

We’re also updating some of the core systems in the game for modifying and enhancing your tanks’ performance. The Commander System will replace the existing Crews setup but will function in a similar way, allowing your tank’s commander to learn skills that will give you added abilities in battle.

Two other handy systems, equipment, and consumables, will be updated with new and improved items to load onto your tanks, allowing you to customize the way you destroy your enemies!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s waiting for you in World of Tanks. It’s going to be a legendary December, so log in, be part of the new season, enjoy all the new features we’ve created, and roll out!

5 GDC talks you can watch over the holiday break

The holidays are a wonderful time for rest and recuperation. For a number of different reasons, you may find yourself spending more time at home than ever over the next two weeks with plenty of time to kill.

Why not spend some of that time catching up on GDC talks you may have missed out on?

For your benefit, we’ve gone ahead and picked out a few particularly worthwhile sessions from GDCs of years past that may help you gear up for 2021.

Whether you’re the kind of developer who likes keeping talks on as background noise, or want to sit down and take notes about something you didn’t know about in game development, these talks should help jog your brain and keep you inspired over your long winter’s rest.

So You’re Ready to Pitch to a Publisher? You’re Not

[embedded content]

In 2021, developers of all sizes will be gearing up to pitch their great ideas to game publishers. But experienced developers know by now that a good game idea does not a pitch make. In this 2019 GDC session, Finji CEO Rebekah Saltsman explains their studio’s pitching process for games they pitch to partners, and explains what Finji looks for from indie developers who pitch to them.

The Gamer’s Brain: How Neuroscience and UX Can Impact Design

[embedded content]

Veteran GDC speaker and GDC Masterclass instructor Celia Hodent began a long series of incredible GDC talks with The Gamer’s Brain, a UX breakdown that can help you better understand the neurological habits of your players and help improve your game’s experience. Hodent’s given a number of great GDC talks on the topic, this one can be the one that helps you kick off your UX journey.

A How-To Guide for Muslim Representation in Video Games

[embedded content]

In 2018, game designer Osama Dorias wowed GDC attendees with a presentation that mixed his own life experience and research to explain the power of Muslim representation in video games. Watching his talk might help you reflect on who you can speak to when developing characters for your next game, and how game developers can tell honest, authentic stories about a group of people who make up nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

Forget Protagonists: Writing NPCs with Agency for 80 Days and Beyond

[embedded content]

Game writers and designers might be spending the holiday dreaming up incredible stories for the next generation of video games. But how can you make your story stand out? What if you gave more agency to the characters your player meets along the way? Game writer Meghna Jayanth broke down her writing process in this excellent 2016 talk for the story behind 80 Days.

If you’re in a rut trying to make players care about your game’s characters, maybe she can help you out.

Owlboy: The Motivational Power of Inspiration

[embedded content]

Sometimes game development takes a long, long time. The 2D platformer Owlboy took the folks at D-Pad Studios about nine years to complete, but the result was an incredibly beautiful game that fused a deep platforming adventure with great characters who took the developers’ indomitable spirit to heart.

You might be finishing 2020 with some doubts about the current state your game is in. If you are, we’d strongly suggest you check out Simon Stafsnes Andersen’s talk to learn from a developer who’s been in the exact same place you’ve been, with the same doubts and worries about the future.

For a deeper dive into a specific part of game development, be sure to check out the different playlists available on our YouTube channel! These cover topics like game design, programming, business, animation, and much much more.

From everyone here at the GDC team, we wish you a safe and happy holiday!

Mobile - Pokémon Go’s difficult 2020 was full of ups and downs
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 12-25-2020, 10:10 AM - Forum: New Game Releases - No Replies

Pokémon Go’s difficult 2020 was full of ups and downs

This year, Pokémon Go’s players had a rather taxing time keeping up. In an age where going outside and interacting with others was not just frowned upon, but downright dangerous, there have been a lot of new events to tide players over, and some essential new features that had to be developed in a very short space of time.

Pokémon Go in 2020 began in much the same way the previous year ended. Shadow Pokémon boss fights, including battles against Giovanni with the legendary dogs, were still a relatively new idea, while events were skewed towards celebrating the dawn of a new year. It seems like a sick and twisted joke now, but yes, there was a time when we looked at 2020 with fresh optimism.

Events weren’t all that spectacular in the first few weeks, though a small wave of Unovan Pokémon were introduced as the months continued. However, soon the world was plunged into lockdown, looming real-life events were cancelled, and the style of in-game events taking place took a while to catch up with the new normal.

For some inexplicable reason, Niantic is still making Pokémon regional exclusive with few ways to make them more widely available. Sure, some people decided to take holidays abroad (why?), but most people were largely confined to their homes. The good news was that lockdown also coincided with the introduction of PVP battles and these have mostly been free to participate in. For a short time, accumulating winning streaks was how you could get legendary Pokémon such as Landorus, but thanks to rampant cheating it was not consistently robust enough for most players. Soon it became apparent that this was a temporary solution.

Pokemon Go's remote raids in 2020 allowed for players to connect with each other via invites. Here we see six phones connecting to a raid.

It wasn’t long before Remote Raid passes debuted, but it was a while before necessary improvements were made (namely to only use the pass when battles begin). The system is still not perfect though, as the countdown timer for raids is too short for most people to comfortably join, and it would be better to get an idea of how many trainers are looking at jumping into a raid.

On the whole though, Niantic did make one or two big mistakes, but it’s largely kept the ship running in the new normal.

What Remote Raid passes did allow for the first time was international raiding. The significance of this was not realised until just the Lake Trio event. Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf returned to raids. This time around, thanks to Remote Raid passes, players from around the world could invite players to raids that would be impossible for them to participate in otherwise. The response on social media has been a flooded of people inviting others to raid exclusives with them.

There were costs to raids in the Covid era, namely EX Raids. These haven’t returned since the beginning of the pandemic. It’s not the biggest loss though, as there have been plenty of events for those wanting to catch legendary Pokémon. By far the biggest was Go Fest 2020, which was a worldwide event for the first time in history. There were a few teething problems and it was nowhere near as intimate as a real-life event would have been, but by and large it was a successful event (it brought us Rotom for the first time too, which was nice). We also saw the Today View, which shows off all of the current events and bonuses in the app, which is very handy for those wondering if an event was still on.

There was also a time when getting Pokéballs was challenging for rural players, who were no longer commuting to work. Initially Niantic put out bundles costing one PokéCoin, but eventually free gift boxes were introduced to solve this problem. Changes to the buddy system also allow Pokémon to bring you items such as Gifts to send to friends, and Pokéballs to catch Pokémon. Increased Pokéballs from opening Gifts also encouraged friends to interact with each other, seemingly resolving an immediate problem.

It’s highly likely that the new seasonal approach will bring good things and stuff we’ll find frustrating.

What was less successful out of the gate was the debut of Mega Evolution. Lots of people complained about having very few ways to accumulate Mega Energy, a problem that persists in important ways even now. Since Mega Evolution is temporary, some felt its duration was too short, so Niantic extended the duration a bit. Another more recent controversy was with the much anticipated Pokémon Home integration, as it has its own annoyances with how infrequently you can transfer a shiny legendary Pokémon.

On the whole, Niantic did make one or two big mistakes, but it’s largely kept the ship running in the new normal. Looking to the future, it is somewhat brighter in Pokémon Go thanks to the upcoming ‘Go Beyond’ update. Events will soon be dictated by the seasons, meaning those in the southern hemisphere actually get relevant Pokémon for the weather they have. Increasing the cap to level 50 gives players new challenges, while the debut of Kalos Pokémon, like all new generations, is very exciting indeed.

Niantic can do a bit more though, so we’re asking our Delibird to pass on the message to Niantic for our wishes for next year:

  • Kecleon’s introduction is long overdue. That should be fixed immediately! (If it’s not introduced in the Hoenn celebration week)
  • Global trade distance, while much better than it was initially, still needs to be extended beyond 50km
  • Extend the countdown timers for raids so that people have a chance to join them
  • Allow players to express interest in-app to join raids, so that those nervous about joining a raid can feel more comfortable participating in them. There are third-party apps that can do similar things
  • Redesign of the Friends list so that you can easily filter ones you don’t have contact with any longer (similarly to tags with Pokémon)
  • Make the monthly Community Day events last a weekend rather than one day. You could have a break in-between, but two days is better than one
  • More chances for regionals to appear outside their native region worldwide in events, especially elusive ones like Maractus, Relicanth, and Sigilyph
  • Events for international players to catch Pokémon like Kangaskhan and Heracross, which are regional Pokémon with Mega Evolutions
  • Reduce the number of costumed Pokémon that are introduced next year (except for Cowboy Hat Caterpie, because that one person replying to every official tweet has asked for it for so long)

Tough days are still ahead for all of us, and it’s important that Niantic realises the decisions it makes are key to the survival of Pokémon Go into the next year. It’s highly likely that the new seasonal approach will bring good things and stuff we’ll find frustrating.

As it approaches its fifth birthday, Pokémon Go’s position as the top grossing game on Google Play and third most grossing game on the iOS app store is something Niantic will want to celebrate, so here’s hoping for even bigger things next year.
