Among Us Reportedly Has Biggest Month Ever For Active Users In A Game

Among Us has been 2020's biggest surprise hit, taking Twitch by storm and even getting some play time from US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Now, according to a report released by Nielsen's SuperData, it could be considered one of the most popular games ever in terms of active players.

The report shows that Among Us clocked over half a billion active users just in the month of November, which SuperData says makes it the most popular game ever by this metric. Despite these huge numbers, however, Among Us doesn't even crack the top ten games of the month by earnings, due to its low level of monetization. "The PC version (which has a $5 upfront price) accounted for the majority of revenue from August to November (64%)," the report adds. "Despite having an extremely small share of the total player base (3% in November)."

Among Us' popularity in November was likely helped by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's record-breaking Twitch stream of the game in late October, which was then followed by a second stream at the end of November. The social deception game has found widespread popularity among game streamers at all levels of fame in 2020, even leading to the cancellation of a planned sequel so the team could focus on the first game.

6 Best Python NLP Libraries

If you are a data scientist or aspire to be one investing your time in learning natural language processing (NLP) will be an investment in your future. 2020 saw a surge in the field of natural language processing. In this blog post you will discover 5 popular NLP libraries, and it’s applications.

Preprocessing Libraries

Preprocessing a crucial step in any machine learning pipeline. If you are building a language model you would have to create a word vector which involves removing stop words, and converting words to its root form.

#1 Spacy

Spacy is a popular Python library for sentence tokenization, lemmatization, and stemming. It is an industry grade library which can be used for text preprocessing and training deep learning based text classifiers.

Getting started with Spacy: Named Entity Recognition is an important task in natural language processing. NER helps in extracting important entities like location, organization names, etc.

import spacy # python -m spacy download en_core_web_sm
nlp = spacy.load('en_core_web_sm') sentences = ['Stockholm is a beautiful city', 'Mumbai is a vibrant city' ] for sentence in sentences: doc = nlp(sentence) for entity in doc.ents: print(entity.text, entity.label_) print(spacy.explain(entity.label_))

The above code processes the two sentences and extracts the location in both sentences.

Let us now see the output

As seen from the output the code was able to extract Stockholm and Mumbai and associated them with the GPE label which indicates countries, cities, or states.

#2 NLTK

NLTK is another popular Python library for text preprocessing. It was started as an academic project and soon became very popular amongst researchers and academicians.

Let us see how we can do Part of Speech Tagging using NLTK. Part of speech tagging is used to extract the important part of speech like nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, etc.

import nltk
import os sentence = "Python is a beautiful programming language."
tokens = nltk.word_tokenize(sentence)
tagged = nltk.pos_tag(tokens)
entities = nltk.chunk.ne_chunk(tagged)
print(entities)

The parts of speech that were extract from the above sentence are

 (S   (GPE Python/NNP)   is/VBZ   a/DT   beautiful/JJ   programming/NN   language/NN   ./.)

Applications

A popular application of NLP is to categorize a document into a given set of labels. There are a number of Python libraries which can help you to train deep learning based models for topic modeling, text summarization, sentiment analysis etc. Let us have a look at some of these popular libraries

Most deep learning based NLP models rely on pretrained language models using a process called transfer learning. A huge corpus of document is trained and then this model can be fine-tuned for a specific domain. Some popular libraries which help in using pretrained models and building industry grade NLP applications are

#3 FARM

Farm is a popular open source package developed by a Berlin based company. It is used to make the life of developers easier by providing some nice functionalities like experiment tracking, multitask-learning and parallelized processing of documents.

#4 Flair

Flair is a popular PyTorch based framework which helps developers to build state of the NLP applications like named entity recognition, part-of-speech tagging, sense disambiguation and classification.

#5 Transformers

Transformers is a popular Python library to easily access pretrained models and has support for both PyTorch and TensorFlow. If you want to build an entire NLP pipeline by using pretrained models for Natural language understanding and generation tasks transformers will make your life easier.

#6 Gensim

Gensim is another popular Python library widely used for topic modelling and provides an easy-to-use interface for popular algorithms like word2vec to find synonymous words.

  News - The Wii U’s Getting A New Game Today, Just In Time For Christmas

The Wii U’s Getting A New Game Today, Just In Time For Christmas

Commander Keen in Keen Dreams: Definitive Edition

Loading up the Wii U eShop doesn’t tend to result in many new games or exciting updates these days, but thanks to a release arriving on the system’s digital shelves today, owners of Nintendo’s discontinued system can finally get stuck into something new.

Well, we say new, but the game in question is Commander Keen in Keen Dreams: Definitive Edition, a title that launched on Switch earlier this year and one that was already a remake of a DOS game from the ’90s. Still, the Wii U will take what it can get.

And in all seriousness, it’s great to see a publisher taking the time to launch a game on the Wii U at all. This Definitive Edition release reworks the original and adds new features, levels and more:

Commander Keen is back. In the modernised Definitive Edition of the lost episode “Keen Dream”, Keen has to fend off a nasty nightmare about evil vegetables. The Definitive Edition features full widescreen support, twelve all-new levels – doubling the length over the 1990 original – and a full music score. The game structure has been reworked to make the game a more modern experience without sacrificing any of the original charm!

It’ll be available today on the Wii U eShop for just £4.49, and the Switch version – usually £8.99 – has also been reduced to this lower price up until 31st December.

As it happens, this week we decided to boot up a load of Wii U games to see if people were still playing the system online. It proved to be more popular than we thought after all these years, so we’re glad to see it get a new release. Do you still play your Wii U? Let us know in the comments.

Nintendo Switch Year In Review Is Back For 2020

Last year, Nintendo launched a year in review tool for Switch players to look back on how much time they'd spent playing games on the hybrid console. Now it's back for 2020--a year that's seen the Switch take off in popularity as the pandemic has forced us all to stay inside and seek solace in the quaint world of Animal Crossing.

Switch owners in the US and Canada (but sadly not other regions) can log in here and have a look back on their 2020 with the Switch. Nintendo's tool will show you a bunch of stats, including how much time you spent on the Switch in total, and how many games you played over 2020.

It'll break down how much of that time was spent in different games, too, so you can find out which game dominated your time in 2020. The stats breakdown will also show how many hours you spent gaming per month--which is likely to align closely with the time you spent in lockdowns or social distancing.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from all at AppleInsider

We wish you a peaceful Christmas, filled with much debate in our forums over the articles, reviews, and news that we’ll be keeping you company with.

Regardless of what holidays you celebrate, this is the time of year when most of us can take a bit of a break from work. Just like you, though, there is never a time when we stop being interested in Apple, so be sure you don’t miss out on any of the year-end specials we’ve got.

It wouldn’t be much fun if we unwrapped everything all at once, so throughout the holidays and into the new year, we’ll roll out articles that are practical, serious — and opinionated. And, of course, we’ll still be on the lookout for breaking news and hot deals, because not everybody associated with Apple takes a break for Christmas.

While we hope you get presents you love, there’s nothing wrong with buying yourself a gift, either — especially not after the year we’ve all had. So throughout the holiday period, we’ll be singling out new products with detailed, hands-on reviews.

Thanks for reading AppleInsider in 2020. This is a fascinating time in the company’s history, and it is a privilege that we get to examine and analyze it all with you.

Cube Life: Island Survival Comes To Switch On 26th December

Ah, December 26th. The one day of the year when it is fully acceptable to lie on the sofa all day, playing video games. (What do you mean, that’s every day?) When we’re all pickled from booze, rounder than a Christmas pudding, and totally gifted out, there’s nothing we love more than… more shopping?

Well, get used to it, because Cube Life: Island Survival – a graphically-updated remake of the 2015 Wii U title – is available to buy on the 26th December, with its Minecraft-style chunky blocks and its rather pretty water. Like Minecraft, it has both a Survival and Creative Mode, a bunch of tools, and lots of things that want to kill you. Unlike Minecraft, it has motorboats, HD textures, and sharks.

Check out the screenshots below for a better look at the updated graphics:

Cube Life was popular on the Wii U, largely because it was part of a market that aimed to cater to Minecraft players back before Mojang’s bestseller was available on Nintendo platforms. Of course, now we have the Bedrock Edition on Switch, there’s much less demand for games that attempt to ape the block-building original. Will you be grabbing Cube Life anyway? Let us know in the comments!
