Revived Telltale isn’t developing its next episodic game episode-by-episode

Telltale–that is, the group that revived the studio and some properties after its sudden shutdown a few years back–has shared a small update on the state of some of its products.

That note, readable here, mentions that its The Wolf Among Us sequel is still planned as a ‘season’ and as such is likely releasing on the episodic structure that the original Telltale studio was known for, this time around Telltale won’t start releasing episodes until development on the entire season is wrapped.

“We know that you’re excited to hear more about The Wolf Among Us 2. And we look forward to telling you more when the time is right. What we can say is that we are developing the entire season at once and there is more to do before we’re ready to share what’s next for the Fabletown gang. It’s just not time yet.”

The brief update also mentions that the revived-Telltale has so far been able to re-release several legacy Telltale titles like Tales from Monkey Island, Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures, Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, Telltale Texas Hold’Em! And Telltale Batman Series: Shadow Edition. Not all of the company’s old titles are up for a rerelease, however, as in some cases rights have reverted back to IP owners.

[Hi, I’m ‘how people find your game’ expert Simon Carless, and you’re reading the Game Discoverability Now! newsletter, which you can subscribe to now, a regular look at how people discover and buy video games in the 2020s.]

Welcome to the latest in a series of research/analysis pieces about the Nintendo Switch, probably still the hottest console platform for small and medium-sized indies looking to launch on multiple platforms.

(A good indication of this? A game marketing/discovery Discord I recently joined has a ‘Steam’ channel, a ‘Switch’ channel, and then an ‘Other Stores’ channel. My words, not theirs, folks.)

In my most recent piece on the Switch about a month ago, I talked about some of the aggressive discounting and changed expectations on the platform. But it was more of a ‘what Nintendo might change on the eShop’ article.

So now I’m going to approach it from another angle. Simply – ‘what major misconceptions does the average developer have about the state of the Nintendo Switch market right now?

Using the eShop charts as ‘gospel’ for success

Look, there’s no two ways about it – the ‘14 days rolling sales based on # of units’ eShop chart methodology is better than ‘1 day rolling’, in that it stops games immediately shooting to the top of the charts when massively discounted. (They take a few days.)

But it really confuses things when games sell a gigantic amount of copies discounted. Why? Well, let’s say something sells 3,000-5,000 copies a day for 7 days at 95+% off, and then reverts to full price. How long would it take to disappear from the Top 30, just because X of its 14 days have LOTS of copies sold? I have an answer for that:

I’ve been told that those ‘90%+ off’ games don’t sell many copies at full price (as they move down the charts again). But for anyone idly checking the charts for those 10 days (players or devs!) to see what’s popular – you don’t get any context on the fact these games used to be 99c or less.

In fact, I’m sure a few people are making development decisions because they checked the chart AFTER a game stopped being discounted, and thought it was doing great at full price. In effect, the chart becomes a minefield of ‘used to be cheap, but nobody can tell’.

So if you’re looking for the winners on Switch, spend some time looking at the non-discounted games, or at the price history of certain games. (eShop Prices is pretty good for price history, but remember Europe and North America can be discounted different amounts at different times, sigh.)

And I may start working on a tool to better expose this information, since getting to ‘actual revenue success’ on Switch right now is a little bit painful. (The Bigosaur revenue-adjusted Switch charts are a great starting point, but would love to see more depth and more frequent updates.)

You heard great things about Switch game sales

Early on, Nintendo was keen to broadcast some very impressive sales numbers for indies on Switch – as they should! In April 2018, for example, they announced:

“Stardew Valley […] is heading for global sales of 1 million units after being released last October in the US and Europe, and then in Japan at the start of this year. And Overcooked: Special Edition, which was released last summer in Japan and other markets, has already sold over a half-million units.”

Other numbers have leaked out directly from devs – for example Dead Cells selling 100,000 copies in its first week in January 2019, or Moonlighter selling 150,000 copies on Switch out of its 500,000 total, as of April 2019.

I don’t think Nintendo officially allows you to release sales numbers for your games. (But I’m sure they don’t mind if they are largely positive. And no dev wants to be the person to put their hand up and say ‘actually, our game sold not so well on the Switch’.)

So… people haven’t. And with no publicly comparable data (not even player numbers), you may get a skewed impression. But here’s some things I suspect – things that have changed going into early 2020:

  • There were 40 games released for Switch last week, according to ICO’s Switch newsletter. I’m going to hazard a guess that 50% of them sold less than 1,000 copies in their first week.

  • Conversely, on the high end, perennially charting games like Stardew Valley are STILL selling 10,000 to 20,000 copies per week, even many months or years after coming out. And some other titles (Summer In Mara, for example!) are doing that well in their initial week.

  • The ‘long tail’ seems suboptimum for Switch games at regular price compared to, say, Steam. This is why people are resorting to extreme discounting – because they can’t really get many sales at all after the initial release hit, unless they discount. (This may be store discoverability-related, Switch player behavior-related, game suitability for the platform-related, or all of the above.)

So I’m guessing that 50%-70% of new Switch releases will gross less than $100,000 lifetime – at least before the severe discounts.

My overall point here: when Switch was less crowded, everyone would suggest ‘look, come on over and publish on the Switch, it’s where you make most of your money’. Some people are still saying that.

But those people often released their game in 2018 or early 2019, before the rush hit. But we have triple or quadruple the amount of games now available, some very high quality, with more extreme discounts. So I just don’t think that’s correct any more.

However, Switch is still a very useful platform as part of a multi-platform portfolio. Porting to it shouldn’t be that complex, if you use a mainstream game engine, and Nintendo has a friendly and helpful submission process.

So I see it more like ‘this is part of your strategy, as is publishing on other consoles, as is publishing on Steam’. Thus… don’t discount (haha!) your Switch plans, just have realistic expectations based on where the market is now.

Switch is great – but for premium games only?

I mainly hear people talking about paid premium games on Switch. One thing that’s been curiously under-discussed on Switch is the state of free to play games on the service.

Now, it’s true that you probably wouldn’t want to launch a Switch-exclusive F2P title (though Ninjala is currently one of those, haha!) But there are certain sort options in the Switch eShop which allow you to see charts ranked by total downloads of all games over the last 14 days, including free games.

Here’s the Game Discoverability Now!-compiled rundown for both North America and Europe (in this case, the Netherlands) for the middle of last week:

So as you can see, about half of the top 50 games in Europe ranked by total downloads are free to play games! Surprising, huh? And were you expecting some of these titles (WarFace, Asphalt 9) in the top 10 F2P games by download on Switch? Probably not, I’m guessing.

Of course, F2P downloads only convert to paying users in a fraction of cases (1.5%-5%? I don’t really know on Switch.) But then again, it’s possible a few of those players end up eventually end up spending hundreds of dollars or more.

So I wouldn’t say F2P is a ‘first port of call’, but if you already have a F2P game monetizing well on another console, and you think Nintendo would consider giving it a feature when you launch on Switch… it’s a little bit tempting, right?

Microsoft - Microsoft launches anti-corruption technology to help governments
Posted by: xSicKxBot - 12-11-2020, 03:36 PM - Forum: Windows - No Replies

Microsoft launches anti-corruption technology to help governments

Today marks the 15th anniversary of the United Nations’ International Anti-Corruption Day. On this day, Microsoft is proud to join with others from around the world to use our voice in support of International Anti-Corruption Day and to commit to take steps to reduce corruption.

In recognition of this important day, we are launching Microsoft Anti-Corruption Technology and Solutions (ACTS) to help empower governments and other stakeholders in their corruption fight. With this initiative, we hope to bend the curve of corruption by helping governments innovate with technology, expertise, and other resources.

The UN’s Anti-Corruption Day is observed each year to educate the public on the issue of corruption, to mobilize organizations and governments to work together to help eradicate it, and to highlight successful anti-corruption efforts and initiatives. As noted by the UN, corruption is a complex political, social, and economic phenomenon that is not unique to any single country or government. It undermines democratic institutions, slows economic growth, and contributes to governmental instability. And it is not a new problem. History is rife with examples across the centuries – just this last month, archeologists decoded an inscription by the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus to the people of the ancient city of Nicopolis ad Istrum suggesting gratitude and appreciation for a bribe.

The UN reports that the cost of corruption is more than $3.6 trillion dollars a year. This means that trillions of dollars every year are diverted from needed investments in education, health care, and critical infrastructure around the world. The impact of this is profound: Well-intentioned governments are thwarted in their ability to invest in basic humanitarian causes, and the deceptions caused by corruption subvert honest endeavors to foster inclusive and sustainable growth. Tragically, the people who end up suffering most are exactly the people who can afford it least.

The global events of this year have created a world particularly vulnerable to corruption. As noted by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, “Corruption … is even more damaging in times of crisis – as the world is experiencing now with the Covid-19 pandemic. The response to the virus is creating new opportunities to exploit weak oversight and inadequate transparency, diverting funds away from people in their hour of greatest need.” Governments around the world are scrambling to address the Covid-19 pandemic – speeding to implement measures to address the health emergency and to provide resources for those hardest hit by the resulting economic downturn. These unprecedented investments, however, have exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains, procurement processes, and corruption controls.

This year’s Anti-Corruption Day theme, Recover with Integrity, serves as an important reminder of the critical importance of ensuring that pandemic resources reach their intended recipients. Unless we reduce corruption by exposing it through greater transparency and address it through more effective controls, recovery will be jeopardized.

The opportunity

At Microsoft, we believe corruption is an urgent global issue that can and must be solved. It will require a focused and comprehensive solution, and it will require governments, civil society, and the private sector all working together to promote transparency, create effective controls, and drive accountability. It is a daunting task, but never before has the world had the kinds of tools to fight corruption that exist today. We know, for instance, that data can illuminate hidden patterns and relationships to provide governments with better tools to ensure public moneys go to their intended purposes. Technology resources such as cloud computing, data visualization, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning provide powerful tools for governments and corporations to aggregate and analyze their enormous and complex datasets in the cloud, ferreting out corruption from the shadows where it lives, and even preventing corruption before it happens.

Our commitment

In the next decade, Microsoft ACTS will leverage the company’s investments in cloud computing, data visualization, AI, machine learning, and other emerging technologies to enhance transparency and to detect and deter corruption. We will endeavor to bring the most promising solutions to the broadest possible audience, using our partner networks, programs, and global employee base to scale solutions through careful consideration of their priorities, technical infrastructure, and capabilities.

Over the last six months, we have already begun to make investments in support of the Microsoft ACTS initiative, including a partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank to advance anti-corruption, transparency, and integrity objectives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Announced in July 2020, we are partnering with the IDB Transparency Fund to help bring greater transparency to the use of Covid-19 economic stimulus funds, building on the Mapa Inversiones platform developed by the IDB with Microsoft support and already adopted by many countries in the region. In the coming months and years, we look forward to additional partnerships, learning as we go, and empowering the work of others.

Microsoft is excited not only by the potential for technology to make positive changes on a long-standing societal problem that burdens the lives of citizens, distorts economic development, and erodes trust in public institutions, but also by the opportunity to partner with the international community in this fight.

We stand with the United Nations and the initiatives undertaken by governments around the world to stamp out corruption, and we look forward to working with governments, civil society, and others in the private sector to help us all recover with integrity.

New PS5, Xbox Co-Op Game Evil West Revealed At The Game Awards

The next title from Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior 2 developer Flying Wild Hog is Evil West, a game that'll turn you into a "Wild West superhero" fighting monsters with rifles, six-shooters, and Steampunk-esque technology. Flying Wild Hog announced the title at The Game Awards 2020 with a cinematic trailer that suggests you'll be doing a lot of fighting.

You can check out the trailer below. It's a bit thin on details but suggests you'll be facing down a host of demon-looking creatures as you fight through Evil West's frontier environments.

"In solo or co-op, fight with style in visceral, explosive combat against bloodthirsty monstrosities and become a Wild West Superhero," Flying Wild Hog wrote on Twitter. We also know the game is headed to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2021.

Mobile - Monster Hunter Rise demo release date set for January

Monster Hunter Rise demo release date set for January

Capcom has premiered an enticing new trailer for Monster Hunter Rise at The Game Awards 2020 and announced a demo set to arrive in January 2021. The latest gameplay footage shows off two all-new monsters who’ll make their grand debuts in next year’s title: Bishaten, a strange beast with a distinctive tail, and aquatic leviathan Somnacanth.

Beyond the newcomers, we also get a good look at some returning critters, including the Royal Ludroth and the birdlike Great Wroggi. Just because they’re old, doesn’t mean they’re any less deadly.

While we already knew about the Shrine Ruins hunting grounds, Capcom has now revealed Monster Hunter Rise’s new Flooded Forest area. This, as the name suggests, is a water-logged and overgrown space that could prove rather treacherous for inexperienced hunters. Thankfully, you’ll have your trusty grapple hook to help you traverse the terrain with relative style and grace.

With the Monster Hunter Rise release date set for March 26, it’s fair to say that we still have a bit of a wait on our hands.

The upcoming demo will surely help to tide over impatient fans for the time being, but if your hype levels are already stratospheric, our first impressions are that this could be the best Monster Hunter game to date.

Review: Monster Sanctuary – A Pokémon / Metroidvania Mashup For Number Lovers

When disparate genres come together, it’s the hope of any reviewer that they’ll be able to deploy the traditional “peanut butter and jam” simile. Styles that ought to clash like the wrestling finisher of the same name often synchronise beautifully, with the likes of Crypt of the Necrodancer or the more recent Lair of the Clockwork God brilliantly fusing the rhythm/roguelike and point-n’-click/platformer genres to greatly entertaining effect. Monster Sanctuary aims for a similar alchemy between the ever-popular Metroidvania and… erm… Pokémon. That is, the kidnapping and subsequent enforced violence between a host of critters. And, disappointingly, it’s closer to peanut butter and wholetail scampi. Actually, that sounds like it might be kind of good. How about peanut butter and… er… hats? Both great in and of themselves, not such a superb match unless you’re trying to attract squirrels. Which, in-game, we suppose you could well be.

It’s all rather nice-looking, with SNES-style pixel graphics demonstrating well-drawn sprites and backgrounds, but it’s all a little bit familiar. The locations you’ll visit aren’t particularly novel or memorable. A forest. A cave. A different cave. It’s function over form, but contributes to a somewhat banal aesthetic. Thankfully, though, visual spectacle isn’t the point of Monster Sanctuary. What, then, is the point? Well… good question.

The platforming sections are basic, but enjoyable, with large areas that connect logically as well as plenty of locked-away treasures that require the field skills of a particular monster to access. Much like the HMs of Pokémon yore, you’ll need to use these skills to burn up vines, break down walls, or simply achieve air by hitching a ride with your flying friends. These are smart, thoughtful uses for the monsters you’ll gather, and makes them feel like something more than just options in a menu. It’s a little rudimentary as most of the functions effectively amount to “key in door” – and there are plenty of keys to find in order to open doors, too.

Capturing said monsters for your personal use is a matter of acquiring eggs when enemies drop them in combat, which when you think about it is a touch macabre. You can, of course, rename your little tykes à la Game Freak’s ever-popular money pit, but that’s about where the meaningful comparisons end, as Monster Sanctuary is a very different kettle of fish.

As you move through the extremely traditional Metroidvania map, you’ll encounter free-roaming gangs of monsters; no random battles here. Running into them will initiate a battle, and it’s this pugilism that makes up the lion’s share of your gameplay. Battles in Monster Sanctuary ain’t short, and if you want to level up your crew, you’re best off initiating every single one you come across. What this amounts to, in our experience, is lots and lots of long, slow fights. On average, we found it takes about three turns to defeat a single monster, and every battle is three-on-three, so that’s a lot of turns if you allow for enemy buffs and healing. Of course, this does vary, but we didn’t find anything we’d call straight-up “fodder”. There’s an option to play the battles in double speed, but honestly this really doesn’t make it that much better.

Taking the length of the battles aside, though, there’s a lot of meat on the bone in Monster Sanctuary; min-maxing your team’s stats could become an obsession, given that there are multiple skill trees for each beastie and plenty of held items/accessories to customise your onslaught even further. It’s all totally transparent, too; skill trees are laid out with full explanations of every variable, and even individual attacks during battle will show how much damage you’ll do before you strike. On one hand, this is a stat fiend’s wet dream, but on the other, it can make the whole thing feel about as rote as its environments. There are no real surprises, nothing to raise an eyebrow. We feel like there isn’t meant to be, but the result is a game that’s going to appeal to a specific subset of gamers who will likely pour hundreds of hours into it, wanting to see every possible permutation of a team, every available skill, every dropped loot item. There is what feels like a bottomless well of potential, and if that’s the sort of thing that interests you, this is an instant and vociferous recommendation.

Conclusion

An expansive and content-packed game, Monster Sanctuary would be easy to criticise as a grind if we didn’t find that said grinding was never really necessary to enjoy it. It’s a difficult one to review because a lot of what this reviewer personally found a little boring is exactly what’s going to appeal to its core audience of number-crunching statisticians. While Monster Sanctuary’s is a little plain at the outset, the right people will find it one of their favourite games of the year. It’s a total timesink, but that’s a term that implies said time is being wasted, when it really isn’t. Every fight is pushing your team forward, and the potential for maximising the efficiency and power of your squad is seemingly infinite. It can feel more like organising a spreadsheet than playing a game at times, but it’s impossible to deny that it’s an accomplished game with a lot to offer – and that’s without even taking it online to battle other players. If you like min-maxing, feel free to add a point or two to the score below.

Marvel Studios Will Not Recast Black Panther After Chadwick Boseman's Passing

Black Panther 2 is going to be a very different movie than initially planned after the tragic passing of star Chadwick Boseman. During the Disney Investors Day live stream, Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige confirmed that they will not be recasting the role.

Reflecting on Boseman's work, Feige explained: "His portrayal of T'Challa, the Black Panther, is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium. And it's for that reason that we will not recast the character. However, to honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the kingdom of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film."
