Poll: Box Art Brawl #64 – International Superstar Soccer 98

Welcome back to Box Art Brawl, the series where we throw two or more regional box art variants into a ring and watch them kick seven shades out of each other in a fight for your vote.

Last time we watched Advance Wars: Dual Strike give itself fifteen birthday bumps in a two-way bout between East and West. It appears that the overwhelming majority of you didn’t appreciate the toy town warfare the models on the Japanese cover conveyed, so North America and Europe sailed to a convincing victory with over 85% of the vote.

This week, we thought Switch-owning football fans could do with a pick-me-up following the release of the thoroughly depressing ‘Legacy’ edition of FIFA 21. Yes, for Brawl #64 we’re journeying back to an appropriately 64-bit era when football games on Nintendo consoles weren’t simply ‘good enough’, or even ‘great’ — no, ISS 98 was bloody fantastic. We watched its predecessor in a classic exhibition match back in Brawl #29, but it’s time for the sequel.

Grab your jumpers for goalposts, and let’s kick things off in this highly irregular three-way match.

Europe

As you can see above, European countries got one of two covers. In the UK, for example, we had Italian striker Fabrizio Ravanelli having a stare out against Paul Ince. Alternatively, elsewhere German goalie Andy Köpke replaced the Englishman, although instead of eyeballing the Italian he’s looking into the camera with a face that seems to say “Why is it always me?”.

We like the simplicity here — the black and white photo given a splash of colour from the logo at the bottom and the Konami logo running down the left side. It’s subtle and striking all-at-once. Not bad.

North America

The North American cover isn’t short on colour, that’s for sure, although it’s not much more dynamic than the previous game’s NA cover. Konami went with the flamboyant stylings of Colombian star Carlos Valderrama here, and as one of the most recognisable footballers in history, it’s nice to see him, we guess. At 37 by the time the game came out, though, he wasn’t at the top of his game and his presence feels a bit odd.

Our main quibble is that they’ve managed to make a cover featuring Carlos Valderrama (‘International Superstar’, if you weren’t aware) so spectacularly static and boring. It’s quite a feat.

Japan

The Japanese version of the game came out earlier and boasted the World Cup France 98 licence. Therefore, in Japan the game featured off-brand Woody Woodpecker ‘Footix’, the competition mascot that year.

There’s not much else to say about this generic cover really — as a licenced product, having the brand and logo front-and-centre must have done the job on store shelves. There’s an awful lot of white here, and you could easily slap this image on any piece of merch. Uninspiring, but functional.

Atari Is Making Cryptocurrency In Addition To New Console

Atari is preparing to launch a new console this fall, but the hardware will come alongside another business venture: a new approach to cryptocurrency. The Atari VCS is aiming to hit in November, and will let players buy wares using new "Atari Tokens."

Bloomberg reports that starting October 29, Bitcoin Exchange will sell $1 million in Atari Tokens for 25 cents apiece. Players will be able to use tokens to buy in-game purchases, and Atari foresees the possibility of using its Tokens currency as an industry standard. It's also said to be working on a gaming stablecoin, which isn't ready to launch yet.

Atari is much smaller than its former self, currently at only around 20 staffers. The console launch and cryptocurrency hook are aimed at bringing back the brand after it emerged from bankruptcy. The strategy will rely on players hungry for nostalgia, as the Atari VCS is looking to introduce reimagined versions of classic Atari games like Missile Command: Recharged. It may be a difficult sell, though, coming in at $390--roughly the price of the all-digital PS5.

Leaves are covered by a waxy cuticle on the hat for the summer outer surface that prevents the loss of water. Regulation of transpiration, therefore, is achieved primarily through the opening and closing of stomata on the leaf surface. Stomata are surrounded by two specialized cells called guard cells, which open and close in response to environmental cues such as light intensity and quality, leaf water status, and carbon dioxide concentrations. Stomata must open to allow air containing carbon dioxide and oxygen to diffuse into the leaf for photosynthesis and respiration. When stomata are open, however, water vapor is lost to the external environment, increasing the rate of transpiration. Therefore, plants must maintain a balance between efficient photosynthesis and water loss. 

Structures that produce photosynthates for the growing plant are referred to as sources. Sugars produced in sources, such as leaves, need to be delivered to growing parts of the plant via the phloem in a process called translocation. The points of sugar delivery, such as roots, young shoots, and developing seeds, are called sinks. Researchers hypothesize that mechanical strain induces growth and differentiation to strengthen the tissues. Ethylene and jasmonate are likely involved in thigmomorphogenesis. The first line of defense in plants is an intact and impenetrable barrier. 

Bark and the waxy cuticle can protect against predators. Other adaptations against herbivory include thorns, which are modified branches, and spines, which are modified leaves. They discourage animals by causing physical damage and inducing rashes and allergic reactions. A plant's exterior protection can be compromised by mechanical damage, which may provide an entry point for pathogens. If the first line of defense is breached, the plant must resort to a different set of defense mechanisms, such as toxins and enzymes. Long-distance signaling elicits a systemic response aimed at deterring the predator. As tissue is damaged, jasmonates may promote the synthesis of compounds that are toxic to predators. Jasmonates also elicit the synthesis of volatile compounds that attract parasitoids, which are insects that spend their developing stages in or on another insect, and eventually kill their host. 

Some plant species have modified stems that help to store food, propagate new plants, or discourage predators. Rhizomes, corms, stolons, runners, tubers, bulbs, tendrils, white hat and thorns are examples of modified stems. Creating a website as a freelance developer is relatively easy. Here are the five steps that you must complete:

Go deep into your past and find all valuable things you ever did that help you create trust for this specific customer problem you are targeting.
• Pay: Find a way to get paid. There are plugins to embed a PayPal button—but the best way is to ask for an email. Just embed an HTML button with a mailto source attribute. You should have a separate bank account to divide your personal finances with your business finances from the start.

That’s it. You’ll revisit everything from time to time and improve your web presence through feedback and iteration. There are more things to do but you’ll figure them out as they appear. Don’t overthink—just do it!

Random: Sakurai’s Cat Is Also Curious About Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Legendary game designer and director of the Super Smash Bros. series, Masahiro Sakurai, has been playing Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit this weekend, and like other cats, his own seems to be equally as intrigued by Nintendo’s latest release.

He shared the following image over on his Twitter account yesterday. This cat in the world of Mario Kart takes on the form of “demon beast” according to Google translate, so we’re guessing it’s not going great. Maybe this feline thinks the kart is a mouse!

The real name of this cat is actually called Fukura. It’s not the first time it’s been sighted, either. In fact, Source Gaming has an entire page dedicated to this cat’s history – it’s a female Scottish Fold.

The Switch Version Of The Outer Worlds Is Getting A Patch Next Week

Since the arrival of The Outer Worlds on the Switch this year, Virtuos and Private Division have been hard at work on a patch to improve the overall experience. It’s expected to lift the quality of the visuals and also the game’s performance.

Now, in an update from the official Outer Worlds Twitter account, it’s been confirmed this anticipated patch will roll out on the Switch on 21st October. There’ll also be a sale on 22nd October.

Alongside this was the following image, which shows the visual changes in the Switch version:

More details on what is included in the Nintendo Switch patch will be released soon, but for now, you can enjoy this image showing off some of the visual changes.

There’s no word on when the game’s first expansion DLC will be released on the Switch, but this content has at least been confirmed for this platform by Private Division.

Super Mario Bros. 35: New Limited-Time Event Now Live [Last Chance]

Another new Special Battle event is happening right now in Super Mario Bros. 35, the free-to-play multiplayer Mario game for Switch Online subscribers. This event is called the Limited Course Special Battle, and as its name suggests, it restricts the level selection to a handful of specific stages.

During this Special Battle event, players will only play through World 3-1 to 4-4. The latter stage in particular should make this event hectic, as you'll need to follow a specific path through the maze-like castle in order to reach Bowser at the end. This event only runs through the weekend, ending at 11:59 PM PT on October 18 (2:59 AM ET on October 19).

As previously mentioned, Super Mario Bros. 35 is a free download exclusive for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The game was released as part of Nintendo's Super Mario 35th anniversary celebration, but much like Super Mario 3D All-Stars, it's not a permanent addition to Switch's library; Nintendo says the game will only be available to play until March 31, 2021.
