Microsoft Azure meets growing needs of healthcare organizations, such as Mount Sinai Health System, with a highly scalable public cloud for Epic

New Azure Large Instances allows healthcare providers to manage large EHR database loads using public cloud-hosted infrastructure

REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 10, 2023 — Microsoft Corp. on Thursday announced that Epic clients, starting with Mount Sinai Health System (Mount Sinai), one of New York City’s largest academic medical systems, can use Microsoft Azure Large Instances, a solution designed to achieve the scale needed to run the large Epic electronic health record (EHR) database — up to 50 million database accesses per second. Azure Large Instances leverages dedicated resources, which allows Mount Sinai and other Epic clients to scale beyond the previous limits of shared public cloud infrastructure solutions.

Through close collaboration with Accenture, Mount Sinai continues to migrate many of its workloads to Azure and now has the largest production instance of Epic running on Azure in the world. “We are very excited about this move as it further enables digital transformation, accelerates artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation, provides scalability and flexibility, and reduces upfront infrastructure costs, ultimately leading to improved care and discovery as well as streamlined operations,” said Kristin Myers, executive vice president, chief digital and information officer, and dean for digital and information technology at Mount Sinai.

At the core of healthcare provider organizations and care delivery is the EHR, a real-time, patient-centered record that contains the medical and treatment history of a patient, giving providers a broad view of a patient’s care. As healthcare organizations manage an increasingly complex care landscape and challenging economic conditions, there is a growing desire to consolidate and exit on-premises data centers and build for further innovation. “Going through this digital transformation requires partners who understand our health system’s mission and the criticality of patient care,” said Joseph Gimigliano, chief technology officer at Mount Sinai. Microsoft’s long-standing collaboration with Epic includes enabling the migration of Epic EHR environments to Azure through ongoing joint testing and engineering.

“Our mission is to empower the healthcare industry to achieve more, helping to deliver the best experiences for providers and patients,” said Tom McGuinness, corporate vice president, global healthcare & life sciences at Microsoft. “Through our collaboration with Epic, we are delivering innovation for customers on Azure that will help healthcare organizations reduce the complexity of infrastructure management and control costs with a secure, scalable and agile public cloud solution. These benefits are key to helping healthcare organizations succeed, particularly as they navigate through today’s economic landscape.”

Moving to a cloud-first computing model is essential for many healthcare providers looking to implement a digital transformation strategy to enable better care at lower costs. Healthcare organizations are faced with the increased costs of hardware, software, installation, maintenance and management of healthcare IT landscapes on-premises as well as with the difficulty of finding and retaining staff to build and manage highly available, secure and compliant environments. Azure offers opportunities for agility, cost management and risk reductions by offloading the data center and hardware management to Microsoft. With faster time to value from current investments in the cloud and opportunities to innovate quickly, organizations can rethink how they utilize data and AI and take a digital health platform approach.

There’s no question we are creating massive new opportunity across our ecosystem in this era of AI. Here are highlights from my keynote today at #MSInspire.

I have interacted with this man countless number of times. He is one of India’s largest finance creators with 1.7 M+ subscribers on YouTube. But what I have always admired the most about him is his mission to teach and impact lives. I first got to interact with Akshat Shrivastava almost 5 years back, while working at his startup- Cases Over Coffee as a content and research intern. During that time, I was not sure as to what I would go on to do later on and was just exploring various opportunities that came my way. I had never written on social media before and it was only due to this internship, that I started to get a hang of writing online. Although, I used to write quite extensively earlier, while taking notes for my school exams and while jotting down summaries of various articles that I read, but never did I follow a structured approach to writing. Starting to write online allowed me to- ✅Think clearly. ✅Hire people from 4 countries for my first startup. ✅Build a community of 40+ international relations and economics enthusiasts on whatsapp. ✅Foster strong and meaningful connections with some of the country’s top minds. ✅Know the difference between what is needed in a writeup vs what was extra. Over the years, just writing online has helped me so much and Akshat was one of the first people who pushed me to write online. Although my tenure at the firm was short, it was one of the most fruitful ones that shaped me as a person and helped me go well beyond the traditional wisdom and acquire some modern wisdom. So, when I was recently in Goa, I decided to meet him, no matter how far he was. Well, turns out, he actually was very far from where I stayed, close to 80 KM, but I still decided to rent a scooty and go all the way to catch hold of him (pun intended), whilst enjoying the windy weather. When we met, we both enjoyed some Nachos, sandwiches and coffee together and sipped our way through the conversation, recalling our work, new age media and offcourse finance.
.
Akshat– I wanted to write this post for long but your recent initiative of “Finance for Kids” and imparting financial literacy to kids for free, inspired me and actually got me into action. This post is a reminder for anyone who hasn’t started writing online, yet. 👉Have you started writing online? If yes, what have you learnt from it? We’re thrilled to expand our AI partnership with Meta, as we bring their Llama family of large language models to Azure, and deliver on our vision to be the preferred cloud for both frontier and open models.

Why Are We Moving to Plural Clouds? From “An Insider’s Guide to Cloud Computing” So, why the sudden move to multicloud? While it might seem as though multicloud suddenly showed up as a new cloud computing concept overnight, it’s been steadily growing and evolving for years. Like most things that become famous, it didn’t just happen overnight. People just finally noticed. I have a saying about multicloud: Whether it’s found on purpose or by accident, multicloud is an inevitable reality for most enterprises. In its most simplistic form, multicloud leverages more than a single cloud provider, meaning two or more public cloud providers. While private clouds can be part of a multicloud, most multiclouds leverage multiple public cloud providers such as AWS, Microsoft, and Google. Or even those three and Oracle and Alibaba. Don’t fall into the semantic arguments that are taking place around the definition of multicloud; it’s just any cloud deployment that leverages more than one public cloud provider. In the beginning of multicloud, many enterprises leveraged a single cloud provider and slid into multi- cloud almost by accident. There were always exceptions being made as developers and end users found some vital public cloud service that was not part of the preferred cloud provider’s services for the enterprise. Ta-da. The enterprise became a multicloud user. In many of my clients’ enterprises, IT denied that the other cloud(s) existed. A network scan will reveal other clouds in use on the enterprise network. Ta-da again. The enterprise has a multicloud. Multicloud followed the same pattern of adoption we saw in the “IT Showdown” movement when employees used their company credit cards to adopt SaaS-based systems, typically to circumvent corporate IT because they were sick of hearing “No.” This is how many companies first entered the cloud. IT got dragged in kicking and screaming when their outlaw users adopted cloud for them and then pushed the resulting problems back to IT when administration and security of those SaaS clouds got too hard and too costly. Adoption of multicloud followed much the same patterns, but now IT is usually aware that it’s happening, either on purpose or not. “Not on purpose” means that a series of exceptions were made to leverage cloud services from other IaaS cloud providers other than the IT-set standard. So, Cloud A could be an enterprise’s primary provider, typically with many past press releases to promote the “partnership.” The new normal is that the number of other IaaS public cloud providers in use is in double digits. Moreover, clouds are still being added to the mix because specialty cloud services are needed that the existing cloud service provider can’t supply for one reason or another. Obviously, “on purpose” is the way you should adopt any technology, multicloud included. It shouldn’t just happen, but instead unfold around a well-th…

Please join us at #MSInspire tomorrow, as we announce groundbreaking products and partnerships to create new opportunity across our ecosystem in this new era of AI.

Generative AI refers to a category of AI systems that can generate new content, such as text, images, or music. ChatGPT is powered by a Large Language Model, which is a subcategory of a class of models, called Foundation models.  In many cases, foundation models are used as the starting point for generative AI systems. They are trained on a vast amount of unstructured data in an unsupervised manner, allowing them to learn the underlying patterns of the data and create new content that is similar to the original data.  The term “foundation models” was first coined by a team from Stanford. They predict the models will have the foundational capability, that will drive all the applications and use cases by tuning it. Instead of building each model for each task (traditional AI models). ◾For learning materials/ resources in ML, AI, and Data Science, please check my previous posts. Today, we’re expanding our partnership with KPMG, as we bring together AI innovation across the Microsoft Cloud with KPMG’s tax, audit, and advisory expertise to empower employees and unlock insights for customers in the new age of AI.

The internship season at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is about to start, and too many students reached out to me in the past couple months, saying they were not prepared enough and wanted to opt out of the process. This is a very natural tendency when we see people around us with 9+ CGs, amazing interns, great leadership positions and whatnot. When we know there is no chance of bagging an intern, why waste time in the process? The answer was simple: NEVER OPT OUT until there’s no company that fits your aspirations. If there is even one, prepare that CV, learn that process, see how the resume portal works, see how interview shortlists come out, and see how companies and the placement team deal with students. Understanding the process will help you out in the placement season, make you more aware of how companies think and be an experience in which, if you look forward progressively, you can learn a lot. So, keep hustling, keep fighting till the last bit. We are in this together, and we will do something good in the longer run <3 #intern #india #iit

KPMG and Microsoft enter landmark agreement to put AI at the forefront of professional services

Multi-year cloud and AI alliance to supercharge the employee experience and accelerate innovation for clients across Audit, Tax and Advisory

KPMG and Microsoft logos
LONDON and REDMOND, Wash. — July 11, 2023 — KPMG and Microsoft have announced a significant expansion of their global relationship that will reshape professional services across a number of business-critical areas including workforce modernization, safe and secure development, and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for clients, industries and society more broadly.

The industry-leading collaboration between the two global organizations includes a KPMG multibillion dollar commitment in Microsoft cloud and AI services over the next 5 years that will help to unlock potential incremental growth opportunity for KPMG of over US$12 billion. The expanded alliance will enhance KPMG client engagements and supercharge the employee experience in a way that is responsible, trustworthy and safe.

The Microsoft cloud and Azure OpenAI Service capabilities will empower the KPMG global workforce of 265,000 to unleash their creativity, provide faster analysis and spend more time on strategic advice. This will enable them to help clients, including more than 2,500 KPMG & Microsoft joint clients, keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape and solve their greatest business challenges while positioning them for success in the future world of work.

As an early access partner for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service, KPMG professionals will pilot the technologies with select business groups across the global organization, bringing together the increased capabilities of these tools with their experience, insights and sector expertise to enhance client engagements and accelerate digital solution development.

Bill Thomas, Global Chairman and CEO, KPMG International, said: “Our renewed and strengthened relationship with Microsoft is an exciting moment for our people and our clients. It will help harness the power of our multidisciplinary model by ensuring that our people always have the right expertise, skills, and tools to overcome challenges and provide the very best advice to clients. It will also help make KPMG a more agile and resilient business that continues to be an interesting and exciting place to work.

This expansion of our global alliance builds on the combined power of two world-class organizations that share a common set of core values, working together to responsibly use cutting-edge cloud and AI technologies. KPMG is embracing the future, and we believe that AI is key to unlocking sustainable growth in a way that will build a better future for our people, our clients and society.”

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft, said: “We have a real opportunity to apply this next generation of AI to help transform every industry, including professional services. Our expanded partnership with KPMG will bring together AI innovation across the Microsoft Cloud with KPMG’s tax, audit and advisory expertise to empower its employees and unlock insights for its customers.”

The collaboration which spans more than a decade underpinned by this major expansion will benefit KPMG firms’ core business areas in the following ways:

Audit

By infusing data analytics, AI and Azure Cognitive Services into the audit process, through the KPMG smart audit platform KPMG Clara, 85,000 audit professionals who collectively work on hundreds of thousands of audits a year will be empowered to focus more closely on higher-risk areas of the audit, sector-specific risks and challenges – to the benefit of both stakeholders and capital markets. This integration also opens up new market opportunities for KPMG professionals and their clients. For example, with the integration of Microsoft Fabric, KPMG teams will have the ability to directly point to client data instead of having to ingest it, which is a key component to helping enable KPMG professionals to perform audits on a more real time basis.

Tax

Integrating Azure OpenAI Service and Microsoft Fabric into KPMG Digital Gateway, a KPMG single platform solution, will give clients access to the full suite of KPMG Tax & Legal technologies, and allow them to gain more integrated and transparent access to their data and take a more holistic management approach to their tax functions. This was demonstrated most recently through a co-developed AI solution using the Azure OpenAI Service that helps to analyze environmental, social and governance (ESG) data, establish data patterns and draft ESG tax transparency reports, all at increased speed and scale. Additionally, KPMG firms will operate a generative-AI powered “virtual assistant” to create new client service models to help tax professionals become more efficient. It will also help with revenue-generating opportunities such as product experience enhancements and Knowledge management for complex tax laws.

Advisory

Developing an AI-enabled application development and knowledge platform on Microsoft Azure will expedite the creation of specialized solutions for clients, helping to enhance their competitive advantage and profitability while putting ethics and security at the very core of the offerings. The benefits and ongoing success of this continued collaboration already include a joint engagement with Coca-Cola EuroPacific Partners (CCEP) of which Peter Brickley, Chief Information Officer at CCEP said, “KPMG and Microsoft are working together with Coca-Cola EuroPacific Partners on innovative use cases which pioneer improvements to back-office efficiency using generative AI on the Azure platform. By using this new technology, we will prepare our organization for the future, improve our employee experience and support our growth ambitions globally.”

Making an Impact

KPMG professionals will work together with Microsoft to help support businesses with their ESG agendas. Building on the success of the KPMG Circularity Tracker and an ESG and climate data management and analytics solution, both of which have Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability and Microsoft Azure at their core, joint teams will continue to help clients to unify their data sources, leverage the required inputs to help make real-time value-add decisions, and help them to deliver on their sustainability commitments.

In addition, to enhance the commercial prospects of the agreement, KPMG and Microsoft will continue to explore and participate in joint opportunities where they can work together to drive social and community impact worldwide. These currently include the UNESCO global education coalition and KPMG’s 10×30 strategy to help economically empower 10 million underprivileged youths by 2030 — through education, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. The companies will also continue to work together to enhance the reliability of carbon accounting through the Carbon Call to which both KPMG and Microsoft were founding signatories.
