Fine-Tuning GPT-3.5 Turbo – How to Craft Your Own Proprietary LLM

5/5 – (1 vote)

The much-awaited feature for GPT-3.5 Turbo is here: fine-tuning. And guess what? GPT-4 is next in line this autumn. Dive in to discover how this can revolutionize your applications and user experiences.

What’s New?

OpenAI now empowers you to tailor GPT-3.5 Turbo with your data, ensuring the model aligns perfectly with your specific needs. Preliminary results? A fine-tuned GPT-3.5 Turbo can rival, and sometimes even surpass, the base GPT-4 in specialized tasks. And here’s a cherry on top: the data you use remains yours. OpenAI respects your privacy and won’t use it for other model training.

Why Fine-Tune?

Ever since GPT-3.5 Turbo hit the scene, there’s been a clamor for a more personalized touch. Here’s what fine-tuning brings to the table:

  1. Steerability Boost: Want the model to follow instructions to the T? Fine-tuning is your answer. For instance, if you need the model to always reply in German, fine-tuning ensures it does just that.
  2. Consistent Formatting: If you’re into tasks like code completion or API call composition, fine-tuning ensures the model’s responses are formatted just the way you want. Imagine converting user prompts into precise JSON snippets seamlessly.
  3. Customized Tone: Every brand has its voice. With fine-tuning, GPT-3.5 Turbo can echo the unique tone of your brand, ensuring consistency across interactions.

Added Bonuses

  • Shorter Prompts, Same Performance: Fine-tuning means you can trim your prompts and still get top-notch results.
  • More Tokens: GPT-3.5 Turbo, when fine-tuned, can now manage 4k tokens, a whopping double from before. Some early birds have even slashed their prompt sizes by up to 90%, making API calls faster and more cost-effective.

Maximizing Fine-Tuning: The real magic happens when you blend fine-tuning with techniques like prompt engineering, information retrieval, and function calling. Hungry for more insights? OpenAI’s fine-tuning guide is your go-to resource.

You can stay updated on new developments by subscribing to our tech newsletter by downloading the following Python cheat sheet:

Step-by-Step Guide to Fine-Tuning GPT-3.5 Turbo

Step 1: Data Preparation

Before you start, you need to prepare your data in a specific format. This data will guide the model on how to behave. For instance, if you want the model to act as an assistant that occasionally misspells words, your data would look like this:

{ "messages": [ { "role": "system", "content": "You are an assistant that occasionally misspells words" }, { "role": "user", "content": "Tell me a story." }, { "role": "assistant", "content": "One day a student went to schoool." } ]
}

Here, the system instructs the assistant’s behavior, the user provides a prompt, and the assistant responds accordingly.

Step 2: Uploading Your Data

Once your data is ready, you need to upload it to OpenAI. Use the following curl command:

curl https://api.openai.com/v1/files \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY" \ -F "purpose=fine-tune" \ -F "file=@path_to_your_file"

Replace path_to_your_file with the path to your prepared data file. Ensure your OpenAI API key is correctly set in the $OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable.

💡 Recommended: OpenAI Python API – A Helpful Illustrated Guide in 5 Steps

Step 3: Initiating the Fine-Tuning Job

With your data uploaded, it’s time to create a fine-tuning job. Use this curl command:

curl https://api.openai.com/v1/fine_tuning/jobs \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY" \
-d '{ "training_file": "TRAINING_FILE_ID", "model": "gpt-3.5-turbo-0613"
}'

Replace TRAINING_FILE_ID with the ID you received after uploading your data in Step 2.

Once the model completes the fine-tuning, it’s ready for production use. It will have the same rate limits as the base model.

Step 4: Deploying the Fine-Tuned Model

To use your freshly fine-tuned model, employ the following curl command:

curl https://api.openai.com/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Authorization: Bearer $OPENAI_API_KEY" \
-d '{ "model": "ft:gpt-3.5-turbo:org_id", "messages": [ { "role": "system", "content": "You are an assistant that occasionally misspells words" }, { "role": "user", "content": "Hello! What is fine-tuning?" } ]
}'

Replace org_id with your organization’s ID.

Pricing

Pricing Breakdown:

Fine-tuning costs are categorized into training and usage:

  • Training: $0.008 per 1K Tokens
  • Usage Input: $0.012 per 1K Tokens
  • Usage Output: $0.016 per 1K Tokens

To illustrate, a gpt-3.5-turbo fine-tuning job with a 100,000 tokens training file, trained over 3 epochs, would cost approximately $2.40.

Updates on GPT-3 Models:

In July, OpenAI revealed that the original GPT-3 models (ada, babbage, curie, and davinci) would be phased out by January 4th, 2024. However, the good news is that babbage-002 and davinci-002 are now available as replacements. You can access these models via the Completions API.

Furthermore, these models can be fine-tuned using the new API endpoint /v1/fine_tuning/jobs. This endpoint is more versatile, supporting the API’s future growth. Transitioning from the old /v1/fine-tunes to the new endpoint is a breeze. More details are available in the updated fine-tuning guide.

☠ Note: The old /v1/fine-tunes endpoint will be discontinued on January 4th, 2024.

The pricing for both base and fine-tuned GPT-3 models will be provided subsequently.

Coming Soon: OpenAI is gearing up to launch a user-friendly fine-tuning UI. This will offer developers a more intuitive way to monitor ongoing fine-tuning tasks, access completed model versions, and much more. Stay tuned!

With these steps, you’re well on your way to customizing GPT-3.5 Turbo to your unique requirements. Happy fine-tuning!

The best tactics games on Switch and mobile 2023

We love tactics games, and luckily for us, there are plenty of fantastic examples of the genre on both the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. It’s always a thrill to plot your moves ahead of time, unleash your different units, and try your best to overpower your opponent with brain power and weapons. Plus, you can pretend to be an army general without any of the guilt. Sorry little virtual troops, some of you aren’t ever seeing your virtual wives and children again.

Anyway, before we send some fictional soldiers to meet their makers, be sure to check out our huge army of amazing content. Let us command some information into your eyeballs with our guides covering the best Switch RPGs, the best Switch party games, the best Switch strategy games, and of course the best Switch adventure games.

Alright, troops, let’s march on down into our guide to the best tactics games on Switch and mobile.

Tactics games: two armies appear side by side firing weapons

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp – Switch

Nintendo and developer Wayforward recently took two of the best tactics games ever made, jammed them together into one delicious package, and gave them a gorgeous update in this HD remaster. In fact, remaster is cutting it short, as Wayforward gives the games a spiffy new toybox art style, as well as the addition of extra modes and smart enhancements that make these perfect for the modern tactics fans.

Read our Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp review to see why we call it the “blueprint to the perfect remake.”

Tactics games: a grid based level shows an army at war with another

Fire Emblem: Three Houses – Switch

The Fire Emblem franchise rarely steps a foot wrong, but co-developers Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo’s school-focused entry is a particularly stellar step forward for the tactical IP. You play as a young professor called Byleth who must choose which school house to steward, and ultimately lead into war. Full of great characters, amazing fights, and a fantastic story, this is the best Fire Emblem game since Awakening.

Get to know the cast with our Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters guide.

Tactics games: a grid based level shows an army at war with another

Triangle Strategy – Switch

Ignore the silly name, as Square Enix and Team Asano’s HD-2D tactics game is much more complex than its mundane moniker might suggest. A political thriller with more depth than its bright visual style suggests, there’s a reason we argue that it’s the closest thing to a good Game of Thrones game on the market. Read our full Triangle Strategy review to learn why we call it a “sublime tactical game with a gut-wrenching story of political and personal strife.”

Tactics games: Mario fires a gun at a Goomba

Mario & Rabbids Sparks of Hope – Switch

Gamers were in for a big surprise in 2017, as Nintendo and Ubisoft’s Mario & Rabbids collaboration is a fantastic tactics title that somehow blends the Mushroom Kingdom with those loony Lepus. Fast forward to 2022, and Mario & Rabbids Sparks of Hope is an interstellar sequel that improves the franchise in almost every single way. You can read our Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope review for more information, and make sure you don’t miss the Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope Rayman DLC.

Tactics games: A pixelated scene shows two armies at war

Wargroove – Switch

Developer Chucklefish is behind Wargroove, an Advance Wars-like that definitely toes the line between inspiration and imitation. However, this is a really smart tactics game with a lot of great characters, and some really interesting online features. You can even take part in matches with friends, and play whenever you want like a game of chess. It also looks gorgeous, so tactics fans will have a blast with this one.

Tactics games: A pixelated scene shows soldiers at war with insectoid aliens

Into The Breach – Switch and mobile

I will talk about Into The Breach any chance I get. The futuristic roguelike is a tactics masterclass, using just a few units and locations to their fullest potential. Developer Subset Games has crafted an endlessly replayable tactical game that features high-stakes matches to save the human race from a ruthless army of insect-like aliens. The isometric look is also absolutely gorgeous with an incredible synth soundtrack, slightly taking the sting out of watching the end of humanity.

Tactics games: a small island is overrun with battling vikings

Bad North – Switch and mobile

If you want something a bit less complicated, this minimalist masterpiece is a great starting point. From Plausible Concept, Bad North is a game that balances wordless war with simple visuals to offer a tactical game with a difference. Everything is easy to understand, and fantastic visual design means you always know what to do. It gets tricky, but this is a great pick for younger gamers as well.

Meet more about the violent delights of Vikings in our Bad North review.

Tactics games: a wide shot shows aplayer's large clan in the game Clash of Clans

Clash of Clans – mobile

Everyone and their moms know about Clash of Clans, but much like other megahits such as Angry Birds or Candy Crush, Clash of Clans is successful because it’s a great game at its core. Command your own army, build your base, and defend your forces from millions of other players around the world. It’s addictive, it’s easy to understand, and there are potentially years of gameplay. Give it a try, and then use our Clash of Clans bases guide to get started.

Stand down, troops, our guide to the best tactics games on Switch and mobile is over for now. However, if you still have the itch for more gaming – like Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker – then strap on your bomb suit and wander down into our explosive guide on the best Switch survival games.

Cowabunga, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC is coming

As a wise man once said, I like turtles, and I especially love turtles of the ‘mutant’ and ‘ninja’ variety. Well those radical reptiles are back with an update to their recent smash beat-em-up, as Dotemu announces the TMNT Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC. One of the best Netflix games is getting even better!

While the thrilling action side scroller already features plenty of characters to play as and areas to explore, the Dimension Shellshock throws some madness into the mix, taking the heroes on an interdimensional adventure. There are even some new faces along for the ride, as the update brings in Karai and Miyamoto Usagi from the infamous Usagi Yojimbo comics. Considering the turtles are martial arts animals from comics, it’s a great fit.

So far Dotemu is only confirming the console release dates, as the TMNT Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC hits Nintendo Switch, PS4/5, Xbox Series S/X, and PC on August 31, 2023. We’re not sure if or when the DLC is set to hit Netflix users, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we get more details. Shredder’s Revenge is free to download on mobile for any user with an active Netflix account, and it’s one of the best games on the service.

Is there a TMNT Shredder’s Revenge Dimension Shellshock DLC trailer?

You’d better believe it, folks, there is a totally bodacious trailer ready to take your eyes for a trip across the dimensions below.

That’s all we have for now folks, but check back for more turtle-y awesome game news soon. For now, be sure to get a slice of the action with our guide to the best fighting games on Switch next.

All the Deepwoken weapons and how to use them

Roblox Deepwoken is a hardcore fantasy RPG that can be pretty intimidating to newcomers. Trying to build your first character is a challenge, but our list of all the Deepwoken weapons is here to let you know the benefits of all the different weapon types.

Once done here, there’s a huge number of different Roblox experiences out there for all kinds of gamers, and we’ve got the Roblox game codes to go with them. Head over to our King Legacy codes, Untitled Boxing Game codes, Shinobi Life 2 codes, and Murder Mystery 2 codes to grab yourself some freebies.

Deepwoken weapon stances

In Deepwoken, you can switch between one-handed and two-handed fighting stances depending on your weapon loadout. One-handed stance allows you to recover increased posture from parrying and use off-hand weapons like shields, guns, and parrying daggers, but you deal less posture damage in return. In two-handed stance, you recover less posture from parrying but benefit from increased swing speed and harder-hitting parries.

Deepwoken light weapons

Light weapons are exclusively used in one-handed stance, so consider this when preparing your build. The weapons in this category are daggers, rapiers, fists, and guns. Light weapons are great if you value higher attack speed but aren’t well-equipped for high damage or long range.

  • Canor Fang
  • Whaling Knife/Alloyed Whaling Knife

A brand new Atelier mobile game is brewing for iOS and Android

Atelier fans rise up, as publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Gust are set to bring Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night to iOS and Android later this year in Japan, with a western release expected afterward. With any luck, it’s set to be a fresh addition to our best mobile RPGs list, and hopefully, the Atelier Resleriana release date isn’t far away.

The reveal trailer gives us a glimpse at some of the alchemy-infused action, with the series’ normal cute female characters, plenty of silly enemies to bash around, and a colorful environment ready for you to explore. While details are thin on the ground, we do also expect the title to focus on gacha-like mechanics in the same vein as Genshin Impact.

The Atelier franchise is full of great characters and design, so it’s very little surprise to see it dipping its toes into the gacha waters, we just hope it’s all priced fairly. Koei Tecmo provides a brief synopsis that explains the story saying “Protagonist Resna dreamed of spreading the forgotten alchemy to the world once again. Her adventure begins as she sets out for the legendary land ‘The Continent of the End,’ where the clues she seeks are said to lie.”

If you’re excited about the Atelier Resleriana release date, be sure to check out the full reveal trailer below.
