Gears of War 4 Xbox One X Enhancements In-Depth

We’re excited to share how Gears of War 4 has been enhanced for the Xbox One X. Our new trailer showcases the wealth of graphical and gameplay enhancements that are only possible with the world’s most powerful console.  We’re also excited to finally reveal the Preferred Rendering mode so you can play Gears of War 4 how you want!

True 4K Experience
Get ready to experience unmatched clarity, richness and details with true 4K visuals (3840×2160) in our Visuals Rendering Mode. Even if you’re playing on a 1080p screen, you’ll instantly notice the difference thanks to a 4K super sampled image that brings you a crisper, richer looking Gears game than you’ve ever seen before.

HDR
High Dynamic Range provides increased contrast between lights and darks. Battling your way through a lightning flurry in a windflare has never looked better. Gears of War 4 on Xbox One X supports a wide color gamut for true-to-color definition – just as the artists intended – and now at 4K resolution.

Up to 60FPS For Ultra Smooth Gameplay

We’re excited to announce Xbox One X owners will have two Preferred Rendering Options to choose from in Gears of War 4 – Visuals and Performance!

Performance

Put framerate first. For the first time ever, Gears of War will play at up to 60fps in 1080p in Campaign and Horde – all including higher resolution textures and some of the new enhanced graphical features available in Visuals mode.

Visuals

Push graphical fidelity to the max. This mode uses Ultra Quality Textures, a wealth of new and improved graphical features all at 4K resolution (3840×2160) thanks to the power of Xbox One X. You’ll experience the same frame rates you’ve come to expect from Gears of War 4 – 30fps for Campaign and Horde .

In both Rendering modes, Versus will run at a rock-solid 4K 60FPS (with adaptive resolution scaling).

Dolby Atmos Audio Support

When playing Gears of War 4 on Xbox One, we now offer Dolby Atmos, which gives you immersive, moving audio.

The Dolby Access app lets you set up your Dolby Atmos enabled home theater, TV, or sound bar for free, and lets you try or buy Dolby Atmos for Headphones, which gives you immersive sound on any headphones. Experience the visceral sounds of Gears of War in a way that will make you feel like you’re inside the action, only on Xbox One.

Our Most Immersive World Thanks To New Features

The world of Sera has never been more immersive thanks to brand new features and higher resolution textures – all possible with the additional horsepower and memory offered by the Xbox One X.

Enhanced Light Shafts
Also known as God Rays, Enhanced Light Shafts provide true-to-life beams of sunlight in the world. Prepare for jaw dropping lighting as the God Rays peek through gaps in the canopy of trees above you, or in sunset conditions peeking through buildings and statues.

Dynamic Shadows
Shadows in Gears of War 4 are usually pre-defined by an artist to accurately reflect the shadows objects in the world would cast based on the lighting. On Xbox One X, dynamic shadows now react true to the lighting conditions and movement of objects – for example, trees blowing in the wind will cast an accurate moving shadow on the ground – bringing the world of Sera to life like never before.

Increased Draw Distances
With the power of Xbox One X, we can maintain higher resolution textures at a further distance than ever before – creating a higher fidelity picture and crisper world around you, even on the horizon.

Superior Reflections
We’ve pushed our surface space reflections even further to look closer to as you would expect in real life. Reflective surfaces now have a higher definition reflection of your character – whether that’s in a mirror-like reflection of water, or the muddied color reflective nature of metal. It looks especially awesome on the DeeBee’s metallic armor!

Enhanced Character Textures
With our higher resolution textures now available on console thanks to Xbox One X, characters show more detail from head to toe. They’ve never looked better!

Experience this all at no extra cost for Gears of War 4 owners when you pick up your Xbox One X. And, if you’re picking up the Xbox One X but haven’t jumped in to Gears of War 4 yet, you can try it FREE now with our 10-hour trial – the perfect showcase piece for your new super-powered console.

We’re incredibly proud of what the team has been able to achieve on Xbox One X so far. We can’t wait to see you all experience this feast for your eyeballs!

This past weekend in Toronto, over 12,000 sneakerheads packed the Enercare Centre for the “Greatest Sneaker Show On Earth,” Sneaker Con. A big draw of a show like this, aside from being able to cop rare Yeezys, Air Maxes, and Jordans, is Ace of Customs. These shoe artists transform rare pairs of kicks into a one-of-a-kind show pieces.

No stranger to unique, themed pairs, Team Xbox handed Ace of Customs some Xbox One S systems for them to go wild with. The best part is, they’re not staying in Toronto – you can win one! To enter to win the Middle-earth: Shadow of War themed console, head over to Sneakercon’s Instagram, and follow the instructions on the #xboxsneakercon post.

Good luck, and have a great #FreshKickFriday

Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection Q&A

Last week we announced that Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection was available for pre-order and coming to Xbox One and Windows Store on October 31.

We recently had the opportunity to have an in-depth chat with Jorg Neumann, Head of Production, Global Publishing, Microsoft Studios to talk in greater detail about the re-imagining of this game.

Tell us about Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection and what is new and different with this version of Zoo Tycoon.

When we initially brought the popular Zoo Tycoon franchise to Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2013, our goal was to create the most beautiful animals in all of gaming and that is something we believe we absolutely achieved. We are quite proud of that accomplishment.

For this new version, we focused on empowering our fans to do more of what they wanted – specifically the ability to build much larger zoos, increase their control over path construction and enclosure customization. Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection is designed to appeal to traditional Tycoon fans and new players alike, offering the most detailed environments ever seen in the franchise and even more of the most beautiful animals we love, this time from South America and Australia.

Beyond that, we also added ten all-new campaigns in these new regions and we also added another all-new challenge zoo.

Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection is also by far the prettiest game of the series. On Xbox One X, it features awesome 4K Ultra HD visuals and HDR support. On Xbox One and Xbox One S, the game runs natively at 1080p and features HDR support on Xbox One S. It is also available on compatible Windows 10 PCs.

Lastly, the game features Xbox Play Anywhere, where you can pick up where you left off on another Xbox One device or Windows 10 PC, bringing all your saves, game add-ons and achievements with you.

Are there any new animals in this version?
Absolutely – we love the animals in Zoo Tycoon and added 91 new species (on top of the 100 we originally released in 2013) to give players almost 200 animals total. Thematically, we decided to take all the exotic animals from South America like jaguars, tapirs, and anteaters and from Australia such as kangaroos, koalas and platypuses. It’s awesome to have such a large variety to build zoos with!

Is Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection part of the franchise Microsoft had on the PC?

Yes! Zoo Tycoon was hugely popular on the PC in the early 2000s and first made its debut on Xbox 360 and Xbox One in 2013. Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection is a key milestone for that franchise.

If we look under the hood of this game you’ll agree that this is a true simulation – it was developed initially by Frontier Developments plc, a studio in the UK who are experts in simulation games. We’ve combined the strong foundation of a true simulation game with the most detailed environments ever utilizing intuitive yet powerful controls that will appeal to both Tycoon fans and new players alike.

What’s the overall gameplay mechanics and objectives for the game?

In Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection players have to manage the happiness of both the animals and the guests in their zoos.

Players can attract guests by having exotic and diverse animals in their zoos. How happy these animals are matters greatly to the guests, and players can also affect the number of guests who come to the zoo by setting things like the entrance prices, the concession costs, and numerous other factors to ensure that their zoo visitors are happy.

The true stars of the zoos, however, are the animals. Players need to manage the zoos in such a way that keeps the animals happy. It’s important to keep them appropriately fed, to keep them clean and to ensure that they have appropriate companions in their exhibits. For some of these asks, players can hire appropriate staff like zoo keepers and janitors and even specialized breeders. Given that this is a true simulation, there is a robust in-game economy that drives all of this.

As far as objectives, Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection features 30 campaigns (20 from the original 2013 release, 5 new Australian campaigns and 5 new South American campaigns), 21 challenge zoos, as well as a “sandbox mode” where players can freely build zoos in the game’s 21 unique locations all over the planet without the full economy simulation being active.

Are there any multiplayer features to play together with friends and family?

In this re-imagining of the game, we wanted to make sure that Zoo Tycoon fans can easily connect with each other, which is why we include social features including four-person multiplayer over Xbox Live on the Xbox One family of devices and Windows 10 PCs.

What excites me is about that is that players can join in on the fun to create and manage zoos together, trade animals and communicate with their friends via the ZooNews feature – for example if my zoo has the new birth of a female Maltese tiger, I can trade you one my other animals for your male Maltese tiger so they can breed and expand our tiger exhibit.

Did you consult with any animal experts in making this game?

We worked closely with experts at National Geographic to ensure that our animals were well researched and that the game was a scientifically accurate depiction of the real world. When players interact with the animals, they will see that they have likes and dislikes when it comes to food, habitat and social settings based on real animals. All of these behaviors were modelled after the research and information provided by countless animal experts across the world.

Our game also features the Zoopedia, which gives players a encyclopedia of the latest facts on the 190+ animals we have assembled for Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I can’t wait to get this re-imagined version of the Zoo Tycoon franchise into the hands of “Tycoon” fans as well as new fans. You can pre-order now for $29.99 USD and it launches on October 31 at any major retailer, on Xbox.com, or in the Xbox Store or Windows Store.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode Two Available Now on Xbox One

When we released Life is Strange: Before the Storm Episode One: Awake some weeks ago, it was with the weight of responsibility and not a little trepidation. We had crafted Before the Storm in a way that we felt it could proudly stand next to the first game from 2015, but ultimately it was up to you, the fans, to decide whether we had achieved that aim or not. To see such positive initial impressions from both players and critics was awesome! We loved seeing how much you enjoyed being back in Arcadia Bay while also discovering new areas and finding out more about the person that Chloe Price is and was.

Life is Strange Before the Storm Screenshot

The great thing about episodic games is that the wait in-between releases lets the previous episode sink in and community discussions and theories pop up daily about what has happened (and what does it mean!?) and where the narrative will take us next. We’ve watched, listened, and read your theories over the past few weeks while working on getting Episode Two ready for release; we’d like to give a shout-out to a few of them (Spoiler: If you haven’t played Episode One yet, consider skipping this next paragraph).

Life is Strange Before the Storm Screenshot

Geek Remix is a YouTube channel whose theories during Life is Strange managed to hit the nail on the head with each released episode, so we were naturally intrigued to see what they would come up with for Before the Storm. We particularly enjoyed absorbing their “Arcadia Bay is cursed” theory, and it ties in quite nicely with their “Raven King” theory. Both videos are quite short and easy to take in but do open up many questions… Is the omnipresent Raven a mystical being guiding the destiny of Arcadia Bay? Is it benevolent or evil? Our other community hubs  have also churned through some interesting theories. Who is the mysterious woman? Could she have a special connection to the fire and intended for it to happen? Could she be a Prescott!? And what about Rachel? Could she perhaps be the cause of the Storm in season one?

So many questions! We fully hope that Episode Two will help evolve some of these theories as we continue to delve into the history of Chloe and Rachel’s relationship to one another and find out more about the world of Arcadia Bay. Happy gaming and exploring!

New Fall Update for Xbox One Available for Everyone Today

It’s been a busy and exciting summer for everyone at Team Xbox. Back in August we gave you a first look at the fall update for Xbox One, and we showed off the new Home, Guide and Community tabs. Since then, we’ve been working with Xbox Insiders to gather feedback, test and refine new features that we’re releasing worldwide starting today. As gamers, we like to play and watch content the way we want, with the people we want. With this update, our fans asked for more personalization options and we’ve put more control in their hands. Here’s a rundown of the new features.

Content Block Xbox One

You can personalize your “Home” more than ever before: You can…

  • Make Home uniquely yours. Add your favorite games, friends, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass, and more directly to your Home screen with a new concept that we call blocks. Once you’ve added blocks, you can remove or change the order of the blocks as you see fit.
  • Have up to 40 pins!  All these pins will appear in the Pin block on Home, as well as the Pins flyout in the new Guide!
  • Easily discover new things, such as friend activities, leaderboards, LFG posts, tips, quick links to Game Hubs, across both your console and Xbox Live at the top of Home.
  • Choose dark, light, or high-contrast theme option in Settings.

 Updated Xbox Guide

You’ll experience a fast, powerful and convenient Guide:

  • It’s now faster and easier to move left and right through horizontal tabs with the left thumb stick or bumpers.
  • When you bring up Guide while in an active party or broadcast, Guide will automatically open the party or broadcast section by default for faster access to controls.
  • New “Friends in games” flyout informs you of friends playing the same game.
  • Game invites will show up in the Multiplayer tab of the Guide.
  • The new Tournaments section in the Multiplayer tab of the Guide provides a quick portal into the official and community tournaments that you’ve joined. Enjoy more Xbox Arena tournament options with the addition of new titles.

Community Feed on Xbox One

Don’t worry about missing any actions when you step away from your console:

  • With the enhanced notification system, when your Xbox One is idle, time-sensitive activities and status are visible from far away.
  • The screen-dimming functionality has also been updated to better prevent screen ghosting, both when the screen is dimmed and when it’s showing notification snapshots of what’s happening on Xbox Live.
  • The newly redesigned Game Hub Welcome tab now features a summary of all the great content around the game on one page.
  • Profiles now enable faster access to recent activity. You can now easily manage who sees your activity feed content through the “Others can see your activity feed” privacy setting.
  • See more content at a glance with new Community feed, and view screenshots and game clips in an immersive, full-screen view.

Get a head start on Xbox One X (Launch Day Nov 7): Your console setup experience will be quicker for both new users and upgraders.  There are new options to help save time when moving from one Xbox One to another (including Xbox One X), so you can get back to playing faster.

  • Transfer your games to an external drive so you can connect it to your new console and play immediately. Just unplug the drive from your current console, plug it in to your new one, and you’re ready to go.
  • Existing Xbox One owners can back up their games and console settings to an external drive so that they’re ready to be applied to the new console during setup.
  • Copy your games and apps over your home network from one console to another via network transfer.
  • Bulk transfer will allow you to select and transfer as many games as you want all at once.
  • You’ll be able to download 4K content for some games ahead of time to your Xbox One or Xbox One S, so that you’re ready to transfer Xbox One X Enhanced games to your new console on day one.
  • You can easily discover Xbox One X Enhanced titles in the Store, and developers can optimize game delivery by making sure that 4K assets are installed only for Xbox One X.
  • You’ll be able to sort and filter your Installed and Ready to Install games library to find Xbox One X Enhanced titles.

Discover and Create Engaging Content:

  • The Mixer tab on the dashboard will now display broadcast previews so you can see what’s going on in popular streams before you join them.
  • If your bandwidth supports a 1080p broadcast, we will upgrade it automatically for your Xbox One family of devices.
  • The Broadcast & Capture tab in Guide is also now more deeply integrated with Mixer. Once you start a Broadcast, a new flyout will appear that includes your profile stats.
  • You can also use a USB webcam to broadcast yourself alongside your gameplay on Mixer, or to have a 1:1 or group video chat with friends using Skype.
  • GameDVR will now be able to capture up to 4K/HDR screenshots and game clips on Xbox One X, and you’ll be able to capture content directly to an external hard drive.
