Get free goodies in Ailment prequel Endurance, out this week

The talented developer behind 2019’s pixel art shooter Ailment, Ivan Panasenko, is back with an explosive new prequel, Endurance, which just launched this week on iOS and Android. This action-packed adventure takes place before the events of the first game, and challenges you to explore the eponymous laboratory spaceship Endurance to figure out where a deadly virus originated.

You see, this virus had the unfortunate side effect of making the ship’s crew go insane. So it’s up to you to fight your way through the insane hordes to figure out what happened and rescue any surviving crew members along the way.

There are multiple different characters to choose from, and you can upgrade all of them with new weapons and abilities as you progress. That will come in handy; particularly against one of the game’s many bosses. The action takes place from a top-down perspective over the course of a ton of different levels, with humour and combat in abundance. If you liked Ailment, suffice to say that you’ll basically love Endurance.

To celebrate this week’s launch, we’ve teamed up with Panasenko himself to bring 30 lucky Pocket Tactics readers a bunch of free in-game goodies for Endurance, and you simply fill in one of the Gleam forms below, though please pay careful attention to the platform details above each form.

We’ve got 15 iOS and 15 Android codes up for grabs. We need your full name and email address so we can contact you in a week’s time if you win. We also require that you read our full terms and conditions before you enter, listed here.

A new Lord of the Rings mobile game is in the works

The new mobile games announcements keep on coming. NetEase and Warner Bros. have revealed that they’re working on a new strategy title based on The Lord of the Rings. Little is known about The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War apart from the genre. The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War release date is currently unknown, too. So it may be a while before you learn anything else.

“With NetEase, we have an excellent partner for The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War bringing gamers the mobile experience in this rich universe they are looking for,” says Warner Bros. president David Haddad. “This adaptation will unlock new opportunities for players to explore the iconic settings and characters of Middle-earth while utilizing their strategic skills in battle.”

This isn’t the first time NetEase and Warner Bros have worked together. NetEase is also working on a mobile RPG game with card elements based on Harry Potter. It’s called Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, and it’s currently being tested in China. Not much on a Harry Potter: Magic Awakened release date there, either – but as it’s now in beta, we have more hope that you can play that one sooner.

If you don’t fancy waiting to get your strategy fix, though, then you can always check out our best mobile strategy games article. We also have a list of upcoming mobile games, too, so you can see some of the best games releases that are over the horizon.

People are being arrested over selling hacks for China’s version of PUBG Mobile

Twelve people have gotten themselves into hot water with police in China over allegedly selling hacks for the Chinese version of PUBG Mobile. As translated and reported by Abacus, the group used Bitcoin to purchase the cheats from “overseas personnel” before going on to sell them to Peacekeeper Elite players. Kunshan police say the business is worth up to $15 million, which makes me question what I’m doing with my life.

The hacks themselves are relatively standard. The cheats give players the ability to see people through walls and hit as many headshots as they please through the use of an aimbot, which is particularly brutal given it’s a mobile FPS game. The punishment is currently unclear if the group is found guilty, but people have been fined for similar offences. As Abacus further points out, two men were given a one-year prison sentence and a $2,833 fine for creating Honor of Kings hacks.

If you’re unaware, Peacekeeper Elite is Tencent’s Chinese version of PUBG Mobile. Despite initially being available in China, the battle royale game was modified and re-released under a different name to satisfy China’s censorship restrictions. Peacekeeper still looks just like PUBG Mobile, from character models to general graphic texts. In this version, though, there is no blood or gore, and words like ‘kill’ are swapped to non-violent alternatives like ‘defeat’.

It appears that PUBG Mobile hacks aren’t just limited to China, however. A glance at the game’s unofficial Subreddit page reveals several complaints from players in the last few hours alone. There’s even a specific post flare designed to report accounts of cheating.

5th time today getting killed by a cheater 🤦🏽‍♂️ so annoying from PUBGMobile

We’ve reached out for more information and will update this story if we hear back. In the meantime, though, you can check out our PUBG Mobile update guide for more up-to-date information on what’s going on. We even have a guide on the best multiplayer mobile games if you fancy something different.

A new Metal Slug game is being made for mobile

Looks like we’re set for a new Metal Slug game on mobile from Neo Geo developer SNK Interactive. That comes from South Korean publication Inven (Thanks, Siliconera), which reports that the upcoming mobile game is “80% complete”, and is set to come to iOS and Android.

The new Metal Slug game has yet to be revealed officially, so we don’t have a name just yet. That said, the report describes the game as a 2D side scrolling card-type game. There’s no word on a release date either, but SNK are apparently hopeful of releasing their console Metal Slug game in 2020, so we could see something similar here. Inven also quotes SNK Interactive CEO Jeon Se-hwan as saying the game will target ten to 20 and 30 to 40 year olds – as a 28-year-old, I don’t know how to feel about this.

The report also clarifies that the new Metal Slug mobile game has nothing to do with the project that is being worked on by Tencent’s Timi Studio – so you may have two new Metal Slug games to play soon. Details on that project are thin on the ground, but we’ll report back if we stumble across anything.

In case you’re unaware, Metal Slug is a run-and-gun shoot ’em up that puts in the boots of military cadets. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one, though, as Metal Slug 7 launched way back in 2008 on the Nintendo DS before showing up on the PSP a year later as Metal Slug XX.

If you’re looking for something to play in the meantime, though, then we have a list of the best mobile multiplayer games on iOS and Android – handy as you can get all of your friends involved, too.

Tales of Crestoria’s release date has been delayed

June 5, 2020 Tales of Crestoria has been delayed to allow the team to make final adjustments.

You’ll have to wait a little bit longer to get your hands on Tales of Crestoria. Developer Bandai Namco took to Twitter to update fans that it would need a bit more time to get the RPG ready for launch. A new Tales of Crestoria release date hasn’t been given just yet.

“We are currently making the final adjustments, and fixing any issues found during the beta test,” Tagawa explains. “This is taking longer than we initially predicted. Development has continued with the release date of early June in mind, but we still need more time. We are deeply sorry to have to share this news, especially after the last update on the release date.”

If you haven’t heard of Tales of Crestoria, it’s a mobile-exclusive entry in the long-running JRPG series. It tells the story of Kanata, a criminal striving to atone for his wrongdoings. Cue an adventure across a brand new world full of original characters to meet, alongside your favourite heroes from previous entries. That includes Cress, Luke, Velvet, and more. It wouldn’t be a Tales gacha RPG without the ability to create your dream team.

What doesn’t make the transition is the traditional Tales battle system, which has been swapped out in favour of turn-based combat. There are plenty of flashy special effects though, as well as trademark Tales skills and mystic arts, which allow you to dish out insane damage numbers.

There are also plenty of skits, which are a recurring feature in the series. This time around they take the form of face chat conversations though. There are also additional character episodes to play through, which allow you to learn more about their individual backstories.

If you haven’t already, you can still pre-register for it right now on the App Store or Google Play. You can also venture over to the official site to learn more.

Crying Suns is an FTL inspired strategy game that’s out this month

After enjoying some time on Steam, Alt Shift’s tactical rogue-lite Crying Suns is making the voyage to mobile devices. You won’t be waiting long as the Crying Suns mobile release date is set for June 25, 2020. This one is a premium release, and will set you back $8.99 / €9.99 – so no in-app purchases or ads.

The FTL-inspired strategy game is launching across iOS, Android, and tablets at the same time, too, so you won’t be left waiting if you don’t have the right device. That ought to be a relief to Android users after the recent Slay the Spire iOS release date news – and by Android users, I mean me.

If you’re unfamiliar, Crying Suns is a tactical rogue-lite that puts you in the shoes of a space commander with a fleet at their disposal. The gameplay features turn-based fights between battleships and space exploration in a procedurally-generated universe. If you’d like to see more, then you can check out the trailer below to see some gameplay alongside a Hyper Light Drifter-like art style.

Story details are light, but you’re out to discover details about a fallen empire. The tale stretches over six chapters, and there are more than 300 possible story events. Crying Suns takes thematic inspiration from Foundation, Dune, and Battlestar Galactica, too, if that’s your kind of thing.

If you’d like to read some more thoughts, then our sister site Strategy Gamer wrote a Crying Suns review when it came out on Steam. If you’d like more mobile games like Crying Suns to keep you thinking while you wait for the launch date, then check out our best mobile strategy games guide. I’d personally recommend Bad North – come for the lovely art style, stay for a viking free-for-all.

Gwent’s next expansion is coming out this month

There’s some good news if you’re looking to freshen up your Gwent deck with some new cards. CD Projekt Red has revealed that the game is getting another free expansion for iOS and Android. The Gwent Master Mirror release date is set for June 30, 2020, so there’s not long to wait at all.

The new Gwent expansion adds more than 70 new cards that are themed around Witcher 3 baddie Gaunter O’Dimm and his role in the events of the Continent’s history. In amongst these new cards, you can find faction-specific ones and a new Legendary card type that evolves in both appearance and power as your fight rumbles on. You’ll also find 11 neutral cards that can be used in any of Gwent’s factions. If that’s not enough, the Master Mirror update also introduces new statuses and abilities. So there’s plenty of new tools for strategising.

While the Gwent Master Mirror release date is a wee bit away, pre-order offers have already been added to the Gwent store in-game. If you check out these offers, you’ll find packs that will grant you new cards from the expansion when it comes out, alongside a unique Gaunter O’Dimm leader skin. There’s also a Master Mirror-inspired cardback and title in certain packs that are ready to equip in-game after you get ’em.

In case you’ve been out of the loop, Gwent is a turn-based card game that was initially playable in The Witcher 3 before it got a standalone release on iOS and then Android. Each game is played between two people and lasts three rounds. Each deck has at least 25 cards and comes from a different faction that affects your playstyle. You can check out Sean’s Gwent review for more of our thoughts.

Looks like a Slay the Spire mobile update is coming soon

Details on Slay the Spire‘s mobile release date have been thin on the ground since game developer Mega Crit Games revealed it would be delayed past 2019 late last year. That could all be set to change, however, as one of the developers working on the project reveals we should get an update soon.

Anthony Giovannetti replied to someone on Twitter late last May explaining that an update “should” arrive this month. “We should have an announcement on mobile within the next 30 days,” he explains. That was tweeted May 22, so if you want to get super technical about it, you could say we should hear something by June 21. That said, you never know what might happen with unforeseen circumstances, so it’s probably best to sit tight.

Our last update from Mega Crit games came back in January after the developer told another fan that the mobile port was going “through the QA pass” and was “solely in our publisher’s hands at this point”. The final QA process in games development can take a while, but we should hopefully get a better idea of when we can play Slay the Spire on iOS and Android soon.

In case you’ve yet to play Slay the Spire, it’s a rogue-like card battle that fully launched on PC in 2019. You try to make your way up the titular tower, battling hordes of goons as you go. There’s no room to get used to things, though, as the tower will change each time you die – so you’ll need to be good at thinking on your feet.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, then you can check out our guide on the best games like Slay the Spire on mobile to get a feel of what it might play like once it comes out. There’s a fair few games you can choose, from Dimensions of Dreams to Meteorfall: Journey.

A new Legends of Runeterra character concept is being created in a ‘Draw with Riot’ art stream

Riot Games has announced the first ‘Draw with Riot’ art stream is running tonight, creating a new character concept for Legends of Runeterra. The stream follows Runeterra’s principal concept artist, Chris Campbell, as he draws the character live. We’re extremely excited to see the new concept, since Legends of Runeterra’s art is out of this world gorgeous. But we’re also excited because in the notes for Patch 1.2, which dropped a little while back, it was hinted that this livestream might also give us info about future content coming to Legends of Runeterra.

Could this livestream also reveal the concept for the next expansion pack? Or will it reveal a solo character coming to the game? We have absolutely no idea, but the best way of finding out is by settling down to watch the livestream.

For those that don’t know, Riot Games’ card battler, Legends of Runeterra recently came to mobile, launching at the same time as the expansion pack, Rising Tides. It’s wowed a lot of people, especially us – read our Legends of Runeterra review if you want to know why!

Riot also revealed a new roadmap for Legends of Runeterra today, introducing three new game modes: Labs, Gauntlets, and Events. The video also reveals that Runeterra will get a new region expansion every six months, and new cards every two. Full details can be seen below:

It sounds as if ‘Draw with Riot’ is going to be a regular feature from now on, and these streams are a really great way of learning more about how the game’s concept art is created. But since Runeterra’s art is so beautiful, you really won’t hear us complaining.

If you want to catch the stream, it’s just started, and is happening over on Riot Games’ Twitch channel as we speak. For those reading this later, as with most streams, the video will be available for you to watch after the fact.

You can download Legends of Runeterra on Google Play and the App Store, and if you want some help getting started, be sure to check out our Legends of Runeterra tier list and our Legends of Runterra decks guide.

A new Dragon Quest game is coming to mobile next year

A new Dragon Quest game is in the works for iOS and Android. Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna during a live stream with Pokemon Masters creator Dena handling development duties. These game names are not getting any shorter.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna is due to release in Japan in 2021 on iOS and Android, but we don’t have a specific date just yet. There is also no word on a Western release date, either.

We got a quick glimpse of gameplay that shows Dai, Popp, and Maam dashing from fight-to-fight and engaging in three-lane battles. You can check more of the game out in the reveal trailer below. The dash RPG looks a tad like Pokemon Masters, at least where the fighting is concerned as that game also features three-on-three bouts. The main difference between the two is that you do your own fighting in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna – obviously.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Tamashii no Kizuna – which means bonds of souls, in case you were wondering – was revealed alongside two other titles. Infinity Strash – Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai – Xross Blade will launch on consoles and arcade respectively.

All three of them are based on a manga called Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai which ran in a Japanese magazine called Shonen Jump.
