Win a free copy of side-scrolling vehicular adventure, Far: Lone Sails!

There’s something kind of enchanting about side-scrollers, as characters travel along fixed paths towards unknown destinations, with every slide of the screen unveiling more of the world and its mysteries. It’s a formula that’s used to fantastic effect in indie games like Playdead’s Limbo and Inside, or even to some degree in Videocult’s Rainworld. But Far: Lone Sails adds its own twist to this famous formula, as you set sail on your landship and work to keep it running as you make the journey across a lonely, post-apocalyptic world.

If you look at our Far: Lone Sails review, you can see how much we enjoyed the game! So much, in fact, that we decided to partner with Mixtvision to give away some Android and iOS copies of the side-scrolling adventure.

So if hoisting up the sails, shoveling fuel into the engine, and watching the land roll by beneath you sounds like the easy life, be sure to enter the giveaway below for a chance to win yourself a copy on your platform of choice.

In order to enter the giveaway, all you have to do is choose your platform, and enter in the appropriate box. Please do have a glance at our terms and conditions first, though.

Win yourself a free copy of shape-shifting puzzler, Girabox!

It’s often hard to find the balance between puzzle games that are too complicated, and puzzle games that aren’t complicated enough. But in our experience, the best mobile puzzle games, and the best puzzle games in general, are actually very simple. Look at Portal, for example, and you see a game which centres around one fairly simple mechanic: creating Portals. But what makes the game incredible is how it gradually builds complexity around that.

Girabox is a puzzle game that plays with a similar idea. The central mechanic of the game sees you solve puzzles by spinning shapes, trying to use gravity to move your icon to the goal. Sounds simple, right? Well, just like those previously mentioned puzzle games, Girabox builds complexity as the game goes on, presenting players with a challenge while also retaining that accessible simplicity.

And never one to turn down a good puzzle game, we’ve partnered with Girabox for this week’s giveaway. We’ve got both iOS and Android copies of the game, so if we’ve peaked your interest, be sure to enter down below.

In order to throw your hat into the ring, all you have to do is fill out one of the entry boxes. Please make sure you fill out the correct one for your device, though, as that will affect what code you get if you win. Also please have a glance at our terms and conditions.

Win a free copy of mystery-adventure game The Almost Gone!

Who doesn’t love a good mobile mystery? Whether it’s inspecting intricate objects in The Room, or exploring a whole planet in Krystopia: Nova’s Journey, mobile is specially equipped to offer little mysteries to dip in and out of. That’s why, this week, we’ve decided to partner with Playdigious and give away some Android and iOS copies of The Almost Gone. This mystery-adventure game is a little like if Monument Valley collided with Gone Home – a mobile mystery game where you uncover secrets by moving between rooms, and inspecting them for clues.

But each room or scene in The Almost Gone is a beautiful 3D diorama, that you can move, and tap to highlight objects of importance. If you hadn’t guessed, we absolutely love 3D dioramas on mobile, whether its Bad North, Monument Valley, or Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows, and The Almost Gone is no exception. We’d honestly play this game just for how aesthetically pleasing it is.

But luckily it also has a pretty captivating mystery, as you unlock each scene like a little puzzle box. If this sounds like your kind of game, be sure to enter for a copy below!

There are two entry boxes, one for Android and one for iOS, so please be sure to enter the correct one for your platform, as otherwise you won’t be able to play the game. Also, if you plan to enter, be sure to have a glance at our terms and conditions first.

The Pathless gets a new gameplay trailer ahead of its Apple Arcade release

The Pathless is a mythical open-world adventure game coming to the Apple Arcade later this year. Developed by Giant Squid and published by Annapurna Interactive,  The Pathless takes place in a mystical land, invaded by cursed spirits. It’s up to you, an acrobatic huntress, and your incredibly well-trained eagle to bring light back to the world.

The game gives you a vast map to explore, riddled with secrets and puzzles, not to mention, the cursed spirits that are determined to stop you in your tracks. It’s not too often that a six-minute trailer narrated by a creative director gets us so excited, but The Pathless is an outstanding exception.

The lengthy gameplay walkthrough shows off a lot of cool mechanics and adorable features, such as needing to pet your eagle to keep him clean and flying true. Besides, the track record of Annapurna Interactive alone should trigger any mobile gamers inner curiosity. If you’re looking for a game to get excited about, The Pathless could be it.

Judging by the trailer, the map is navigable quickly by sliding, jumping, and flying on the back of your eagle. Once more, a timing system supercedes the traditional way of aiming down sight, making it more important than ever to hone your archery skills:

The Pathless release date is yet to be confirmed, but we know it’s launching sometime this year, and is coming to iOS via the Apple Arcade, as well as Microsoft Windows, Macintosh operating systems, and both Playstation 5 and 4. So there are multiple ways for our Android friends to get their hands on this fantastic open-world adventure.

Netflix’s Aggretsuko anime is getting a mobile game spin-off

The latest anime to get a mobile game spin-off is Netflix’s Aggretsuko. The game is called Aggretsuko: The Short Timer Strikes Back, and it’s a match-three puzzler that’s available on iOS and Android. There’s not long to wait, either, as the Aggretsuko: The Short Timer Strikes Back release date is July 28, 2020.

The show is about a red panda who faces relatable, everyday struggles while working a typical desk job. Her boss is an insensitive jerk, talentless suck-ups are progressing quicker than she is, and her mother won’t stop nagging her to get a boyfriend. What gives Aggretsuko her quirk, though, is that she lets off steam by freestyling death metal songs into a karaoke mic.

Aggretsuko: The Short Timer Strikes Back has a simple premise. Your company is relocating offices, and it’s up to you to handle the decoration. Of course, those decorations don’t come for free, so you’ll have to complete match-three puzzles to acquire the means you need to complete the task. As far as I can see, there’s no death metal karaoke element here, and, yes, I am gutted about that.

If you’d like something to play in the meantime, though, then we have a best mobile puzzle games list we keep on top of.

If it’s something newer you’re after, then we also have a new mobile games list that offers a variety of games across different genres.

A Doctor Who horror game from the Simulacra devs is launching next year

Maze Theory, the VR game developer, has announced two new Doctor Who games. One is for PC and console, but the other is a horror sci-fi game, which is under development in partnership with Kaigan Games. The Malaysian developer is famous for Simulacra, a Telling Lies-esque thriller where you solve a mystery via an in-game mobile phone interface. This unnamed Doctor Who mobile game will reportedly take a similar format, as a “mobile takeover”. Kaigan Games are also well-known for Sarah is Missing, another found phone horror game, and has cemented the company as an acclaimed developer of handheld horror.

The game is set during the period of the current 13th Doctor, Jodie Whitaker, forming a trilogy of three games alongside Doctor Who: Edge of Time, a VR game that launched last November, and a game coming to console and PC next year.

According to the developer, players can expect “new adventures, new game mechanics, intriguing subplots, and iconic features such as the TARDIS, terrifying Weeping Angels, imposing Daleks and – of course – the chance to collude with the Doctor herself.”

The Doctor Who mobile game is official, and under development in partnership with the BBC.

Maze Theory also has a Peaky Blinder’s VR game in-development, so this isn’t its first time transferring a much-loved TV series and intellectual property into a game format.

We don’t know precisely when yet, but the Doctor Who mobile game is currently set to launch sometime early next year. Plenty of time to prepare yourself, or try out Simulacra if you’re feeling brave. You can find Simulacra on Google Play, or the App Store.

The award-winning platformer Gris is out now on Android

April 2, 2020 Gris is now available on Android, and you can find a link to download it at the bottom of this story.

Winner of the Game Awards, ‘Games For Impact’ category, Gris is launching on Android later this week. Following the journey of a girl of the same name, Gris explores ideas of sorrow and grief in a fading world, her dress granting powers which she uses to traverse its many obstacles. Released in December 2018, and launching on iOS at the same time, Gris can be counted as one of the most critically acclaimed indie games of the past couple of years.

In particular, the game was praised for how it dealt with the subject of grief, but also its gorgeous visual aesthetic, and its enchanting soundtrack. Having already cemented its place on mobile with a wonderful iOS port, this Android release has been a long time coming.

Your journey through Gris is somewhat similar to Hellblade (though with far less stabbing of Norse spirits) as you gradually help her recover strength, represented in the powers linked to her dress, and to find acceptance in regards to whatever sorrowful event brought her to this strange plane of existence.

There have been a number of games dealing with mental health in recent years, whether Hellblade, or Sea of Solitude, but with a memorable art style and soundtrack, Gris has carved out some recognition for itself. It was also highly successful considering it was the first game of Barcelona-based developer, Nomada Studio; a collaboration between two ex triple-A developers.

It’s plain to see how inventive Gris is in terms of its gameplay, combining aspects of endless runners, platforming, puzzle, and Metroidvania in terms of abilities. But most of all, the game was recognised for creating a relaxing, therapeutic play experience, mirroring the restorative journey of its protagonist.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can grab the Android version right now on Google Play, or purchase the iOS from the App Store for $4.99 (£4.99).
