Netflix’s mobile games downloads reach 13 million

According to a recent report from Sensor Tower, Netflix’s mobile games library has hit 13 million installs, and while this is certainly on the lacklustre end of things in comparison to a company like Nintendo, it’s still impressive for a streaming service that’s just breaking into the games scene.

Unsurprisingly, it’s Stranger Things 1984 that holds the title of the most Netflix mobile game downloads with two million installs, and the recent release of Stranger Things Season four more than likely plays a huge part in the success of this mobile title. Funnily enough, it’s another Stranger Things game – Stranger Things 3: The Game – that takes third place with 1.5 million downloads.

As for the game in the number two spot, it’s Netflix Asphalt Xtreme, with 1.8 million installs. In the grand scheme of things, these numbers aren’t huge, but it’s a sign that Netflix can grow its mobile games offerings, especially when you consider the fact the company gets one million installs on average per month for its titles.

What is the best month for Netflix mobile games downloads?

December 2021 is the best month in terms of installs, when Netflix’s library hit 2.3 downloads in one month.

Microsoft acquires Bethesda, creators of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Doom

Microsoft just announced its purchase of ZeniMax Media, parent company of Bethesda Softworks, for USD 7.5 billion. This deal means that Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios are now part of the Xbox family. It gives Microsoft ownership of franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Quake, Starfield, and more.

Bethesda has been a big supporter of Xbox Game Pass for some time now, and Microsoft will be adding Bethesda’s beloved franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. You can also look forward to some highly anticipated titles such as Starfield, an upcoming space RPG in development by Bethesda Game Studios, that will be available day one on Game Pass, and many yet to be announced titles.

It will be interesting to see how this affects Nintendo Switch, as many popular Xbox titles have recently launched for the console, including Ori and the Will of the Wisps, which was revealed during the Nintendo Direct Mini recently. Hopefully, this will lead to more Bethesda titles coming to the console.

Beyond a Steel Sky launches tomorrow on Apple Arcade

Revolution has announced the Beyond a Steel Sky release date, and it’s tomorrow, June 26.  Yes, we were surprised too! The developer has been putting the finishing touches on the cyberpunk Apple Arcade game since recently revealing a glimpse of what’s to come in a Beyond a Steel Sky trailer from IGN.

The story trailer gives us a peek at Union City and also shows off some of the game’s quirky cast. It mainly serves, however, to set the game’s story in motion. You’re playing as Robert Foster, a grizzled chap in a trench coat who is about to play detective – as is the cyberpunk way. A child has been stolen from a peaceful desert community and following his trail brings you to a sprawling metropolis of flying cars and high-tech.

But now we have a Beyond a Steel Sky release date, it looks like you won’t have to wait long to join Foster, and dive into the Cyberpunk world of Steel Sky.

Be sure to check out this glimpse of Beyond a Steel Sky below:

Beyond a Steel Sky is a sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky, which came out in 1994. There are plenty of gameplay differences to make it more accessible to modern players. The most notable is the leap from a 2D point-and-click side scroller to a 3D adventure game. You can still expect plenty of puzzles to solve, though.

For those whose curiosity we’ve peaked, you’ll be able to find Beyond a Steel Sky on Apple Arcade tomorrow. We’ve also rounded up the best iOS and Android games to give you a headstart on that adventure in the mean time.

Scrappers is the latest Apple Arcade release

Apple Arcade has a brand new title in the form of Scrappers, a multiplayer beat-’em-up in which you literally clean up the streets as a team of robot garbage collectors. It takes place in the future, after humanity has destroyed itself. We thought it was a great idea to fire all of the world’s rubbish into space in a rocket, which subsequently crashed down and destroyed the planet.

Skip to the not-so-distant future and robots have taken over. Trash has become a valuable commodity; so much so that rival gangs now stalk the streets looking to keep it all for themselves, and you have to fight them off as you complete your daily rounds. You can partner up with three other players in multiplayer, or go it alone across the game’s over 20 different stages.

There are two key components to Scrappers: cleaning up the streets and beating up any fools trying to stop you. You run around picking up trash and passing it to your teammates, who are carrying a huge stack. The larger the stack, and the more you work together as a team, the greater the rewards.

Then there’s the combat, which should appeal to fans of Streets of Rage. You perform a variety of different combos and attacks, whether it’s with a weapon or your fists. You can unlock new weapons and ‘Scrappers’ (playable characters) by getting high scores, which also provides custom parts that you can use to tweak your garbage truck.

Aside from the lengthy campaign, there are a bunch of minigames to participate in, which you unlock by completing levels on a Super Mario World-style map. There are four different areas to travel through, which are wholly different from each other visually.

If you think you have what it takes to clean up the city of Junktown, head on over to the App Store right now and download it. You’ll need an Apple Arcade subscription to play it.
